TODAY’S PROGRAM: Jason Pall and Sally Walker own and run Glade Road Growing. It is a small farm on leased
land in the town limits that was started to direct market vegetables, chicken, duck eggs and more to the good
folks of Blacksburg. Jason and Sally attended VT (JP for geography and Sally for biological systems engineering)
about 10 years ago and have been running the farm for the past 6 years for their living. This is accomplished
with the assistance of wonderful employees, along with the helpful hands of several neighbors and community
members who just like to get dirty on the farm. They are constantly trying new things and reaching out to those
who want to learn more about how their food can be produced here in beautiful Blacksburg. They feel strongly
that the resources to produce healthy food are right here around us and they enjoy helping other aspiring
farmers in the area get started. They are pretty much an open book, so ask them anything.
FROM LESLIE JESTER, SECRETARY: Chocolate Festival Update!! We are updating Chocolate Tasting Sites and
Kid's Activities. We are ordering glasses and t-shirts. We are selling tickets. We are spreading the word and
work of the Rotary Club of Blacksburg! Please take a moment to visit the Volunteer link and sign up for a couple

FROM TOMMY LOFLIN, VOCATIONAL SERVICE: The nomination period has begun for our CTE Awards. Students
and teachers can access the nomination awards on our website. Be sure to tell folks to return Student
Application, Teacher Nominating Form and Resume to Rick Weaver by April 9th. Our website is

FROM CHRISTY BROWN: RELAY FOR LIFE @VT: Volunteer needed for BHS Interact Club. Seeking a
good fundraiser with lots of creativity, enthusiasm, spirit and energy! The VT Relay is scheduled for
April 24th on the drill field beginning at 5:00 pm. Interested parties please see Christy or email her at

FROM MIKE SNYDER AND DEWEY ROTENBERRY LOCAL SERVICE: Save the date! On June 13th from 11-5:00 we
will be assisting with drink sales and gate tickets at the Mountains of Music Celebration from the Crooked Road
at the Montgomery Museum in Christiansburg. Please set aside some time to help out and listen to some great
Bluegrass! We also have two upcoming projects this spring: A workday at at Valley Interfaith Child Care Center in
Blacksburg and another at the Children's Museum at First & Main. More info to come.

FROM MARQUITA HILL, WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE: The club is taking up donations to purchase a
ShelterBox to replace those that have been sent to Malawi after the terrible floods. The ShelterBox program is
amazing in that they are ready for any tragedy and can deploy these ShelterBoxes directly to the places that
need them almost immediately. Malawai has some, but needs more. This week is to be the last opportunity for
our club to take donations for a ShelterBox and the Club Foundation will match the proceeds from members at

March is Rotary Literacy
Month. Reading aloud to your child
or grandchild is the single most
important thing you can do to
prepare that child to learn and to
read. It doesn’t take long—15
minutes a day—that’s it. Read aloud
to your child 15 minutes each
day. Montgomery-Floyd Regional
Library (MFRL) is offering you a
challenge: Read 1000 books before
your child enters Kindergarten. Make
it a habit for both you and your child
and sign up at any of our libraries.
One in three children start kindergarten without the skills necessary for succeed in school. That child is most
likely the same kid whose parent don’t or can’t take him to the library. This is why MFRL is encouraging Little
Libraries (inside public buildings) and Little Free Libraries (outside in public spaces) throughout the New River
Valley. We want to get books into the hands of every man, woman and child in our beautiful Valley. Donate
your used books now!
