Background:
BoysTown provides a wide range of programs for disadvantaged young people and their
families. These programs are delivered in two service divisions: Counselling Services
and Employment, Education and Training, supported by Corporate Services and
Fundraising.
BoysTown’s mission is “To enable young people, especially those who are marginalised
and without voice, to improve their quality of life.”
BoysTown is a national child-safe organisation, employing a diverse workforce servicing
clients across Australia. All employees are required to ensure that their performance

The Starfish Program services extend across intensive long-term case management,
short-term assistance and support and developing awareness through the delivery of
community education programs. BELLS targets young parents up to 25 years of age and
their pre-school aged children.
Purpose of the Position:
The Co-ordinator, Community Programs Kingston is responsible for leading a
multidisciplinary team in the delivery of diverse programs across the Logan Region
including the Starfish Program , a Family Mental Health Support Service and, the
Building Early Language and Literacy Service (BELLS).

Responsibilities/Duties:
Supervising and managing a high performing team to meet program objectives:

Quality recruitment, induction and probation processes in line with BoysTown’s
protocols and values.

Conducting performance reviews in line with the Organisational Performance
System (OPS), and supporting individuals to develop and build on their
professional skills.

Regular team and employee meetings

Leading a multidisciplinary team in the delivery of intensive, child focused, client
centred, strengths-based case management, information, referral and assistance,
community engagement and individual and group work with young parents and children
aimed at enhancing early language and literacy.

Leading the ongoing development and review of diverse programs in accordance
with continuous improvement principles.

Developing the delivery of flexible, responsive services that meet individual and
family needs utilizing child, youth and family appropriate engagement strategies
including supported, supervised and risk assessed outreach.

Leading the development, delivery and evaluation of group work programs, in
consultation with the BoysTown Workshops and Special Projects Manager where
appropriate.

Analysis of relevant client research, data, and evaluation findings to identify
emerging needs, service responses and opportunities for improved client services

Ensuring compliance with Service Standards.
 Facilitating Case Review Meetings and providing resource material to enhance
practice.
 Effective critical decision-making, in consultation with the BoysTown Clinical
Practice Supervisor, in relation to the needs of families accessing the service
 Working with the Manager, to enhance the strategic focus of the service, including
enhancing professional development, implementing minimum standards, ensuring
access to the service with a primary focus on case management.
 Coordinating and completing program reports of client activities.
 Ensuring service delivery responses are consistent with Boystown’s Mission and
Values.
Managing a case load of program clients:
 Managing complex cases as a senior practitioner.
 Participate in the range of supports offered to families engaged in the Starfish
Program, including intake and assessment, outreach work and referral to external
agencies including specialist counselling.

families on a range of relevant issues (e.g. Child Development, Social Skills, SelfEsteem, Protective Behaviours, etc.).

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and CALD stakeholders.
 Building partnerships with other organisations to maintain effective, accountable
services.
 Organising and facilitating community consultations and forums relevant to the
target groups and referral networks.
 Participate in other duties as may be required in order to achieve efficient and
effective BoysTown services.

Selection Criteria:
Essential Skills:
1. Bachelor Degree in Social Work or Psychology, or relevant area, with four to six years
direct experience in family and youth services.
2. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in working with children and young people at risk
of developing and/or experiencing mental health issues.
3. Demonstrated experience in leading and managing a multidisciplinary team
delivering diverse programs inclusive of supervision and appraisals, managing
performance, and fostering a development culture.
4. Ability to work with a clear client centered and strengths-based framework. This
includes a demonstrated understanding of case management with assessment
frameworks related to Mental Health, Parenting and Family Work and Drug & Alcohol
issues.
5. Experience in planning, implementing and facilitating individual support and group
programs for children and young people who are experiencing or are at risk of
developing, mental health issues and their parents
6. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a team environment,
with sound problem-solving skills.
7. A demonstrated understanding of issues impacting on people from culturally diverse
communities, including possession of appropriate therapeutic frameworks.
8. Demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication including computer skills,
negotiation skills and conflict resolution, report writing, the ability to impart
knowledge, and group activity planning.

Purpose of the Position:
This position provides prevention and early intervention responses to children and young
people aged 0-18 years affected by or at risk of experiencing poor long-term mental
health outcomes and their families. Actively participate in the planning, development,
delivery and review of, mental health programs and services for eligible children, young
people and their families.
Responsibilities/Duties:
Actively participate in the planning, development, delivery and review of mental health
programs and services for eligible children, young people and their families through:
 Development, facilitation /co-facilitation and evaluation of group work activities.
 Assist with the development and delivery of information sessions and workshops.
 Participate in the planning, development, implementation, review and evaluation
of group work and other programs.
 Participate in program development, review and evaluation in collaboration with
the Coordinator and Services Manager.
 Ensure service delivery responses are consistent with BoysTown’s Mission and
Values.

Provide individual intensive case management and relevant support work to young
people identified with multiple and complex needs, including active referral to support
internal and/or external specialist assistance.
 Provide an assessment of young people aged 0-18 years across diverse issues
including those at risk of experiencing poor long-term mental health outcomes,
and their families.
 Act as the single point of contact for all practitioners who are delivering services
to the client.
 Participate in training/skills development to increase skills in working with young
people with complex needs.
 Actively engage with children and young people affected by or at risk of poor
mental health outcomes and their families, with the aim of providing individual
support and improve family functioning and outcomes for the child/young person.
 Providing intensive, child and youth focused, client centred, strengths-based case
management support.
 Development of individualised Family Action Plans (FAP’s) with each child, young
person and family member.
 Participate in the range of supports offered to families, including intake and
assessment, outreach work and referral to external agencies including specialist
counselling.
 Actively participate in case planning and regular case review meetings.
 Provide practical support as required by the program.
Work collaboratively with program staff and other agencies to achieve positive outcomes
for young people and their families.
 Convene stakeholder meetings to support the FAP’s as required.
 Undertake outreach activities, including home visits as appropriate.
 Advocate for the needs of children and young people affected by or at risk of poor
mental health outcomes and their families.
 Network with relevant government and non-government services.
 Work collaboratively with key stakeholders such as schools, youth and family
services, mental health services.

9. Bachelor Degree in a relevant field with 2-4 years direct experience in family and
youth services with demonstrated knowledge and skills in working with children and
young people at risk of developing and/or experiencing mental health issues.
10. Ability to work within a clear client centered and strengths-based framework. This
includes a demonstrated understanding of case management with assessment
frameworks related to Mental Health, Parenting and Family Work and Drug & Alcohol
issues.
11. Experience in delivering appropriate individual support and group programs for
children and young people who are experiencing, or are at risk of developing, mental
health issues and their parents, including experience and understanding of assessing
a child or young person’s general health and wellbeing, including indicators of abuse
and/or neglect.
12. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a team environment,
with sound problem-solving skills.
13. A demonstrated understanding of issues impacting on people from culturally diverse
communities, including possession of appropriate counselling frameworks.
14. Working knowledge of legislation specific to mental health, child protection.
