Physical Literacy Workshop:
Incorporating Physical Literacy into your
Sport/Recreation Program
Community sport and recreation activities tend to be a lot
more fun for those participants who are physically literate.
Moreover, those participants tend to be engaged for longer
than just a season or session.
Mark Verbeek
Mark is passionate about the
enhancement of health and physical
education in education, recreation and
sport. His experience includes 16 years
of teaching, coaching and professional
sport. He believes that health and
physical education takes place anywhere
and has a wealth of experience in
outdoor education as instructor and
director of programming. His largest physical literacy project thus
far has been the aggregation of the
multiple sectors and the successful launch
of the Hamilton Physical Literacy Summit,
currently going into its second year as the
Ontario Physical Literacy Summit - www.
physicalliteracyhamilton.ca . He’s looking
forward to the integration of the Physical
Literacy 101 and PLAY Tools workshops
across the sectors and solidifying physical
literacy as the backbone of an active
Canada!
It’s time to help more people to get – and stay – more
active. This session will help you understand what you need
to do just that… it will help you better understand the steps
toward physical literacy which you can incorporate into
your programs.
In this session you will:
• Become familiar with the concept of physical literacy;
• Learn what physical literacy looks like in sport and
recreation programs;
• Be introduced to the Physical Literacy Assessment
for Youth (PLAY) Tool to help your group/program
track improvements in the physical literacy of your
participants; and
• Meet others who share your passion for working with
children and youth in sport and recreation settings, who
have great ideas to share and who want to hear yours!
Leave this workshop with information and strategies to help
bring physical literacy to life in your recreational or sport
activities, as well has have a better understanding of how to
attract and retain more participants to your program.
