Director’s Message
Welcome to the Whistler Cantando Festival. Once again,
we are thrilled to present another opportunity to make
music in this beautiful mountain setting. Whistler is
the fourth Cantando festival this spring and follows
the Edmonton, Sun Peaks, and Nelson festivals. Each
festival is unique, and venues vary from place to place,
but the one constant is the exposure to great artists and
adjudicators.
The festival opens on Thursday evening with the Mount
Douglas Senior Jazz Band and the UBC Swing Kids. A great
way to meet students from other schools at the festival
and learn a bit about dancing the way your grandparents
did!!
On Friday evening, we are featuring the outstanding wind ensemble from the University
of Central Washington, under the direction of Larry Gookin. This is Professor Gookin’s last
year at this school, after decades of outstanding contributions to music education. The
students from the ensemble are not only performing, but are very involved in most of
the instrumental masterclasses. The ensemble will be featuring guest saxophone soloist
Adam Pelandini, also a CWU faculty member and internationally known performer.
Our jazz artists and adjudicators are all faculty members at Capilano University in
Vancouver. We look forward to their festival performances on Saturday, as well as
masterclasses in improvisation.
The Seattle Symphony String Trio will be performing, adjudicating, and giving instrumental
masterclasses. They were a big hit with our string students two years ago, and we are
thrilled to have them back.
The Saturday evening concert features the mass choir as well as the Vancouver Youth
Choir – both under the direction of Carrie Tennant. We know this concert will be a big hit
with both the choral and instrumental students. We’ve added a late night concert with the
CWU Jazz Sextet at 9:30 in the Hilton Ballroom.
We conclude the festival on Sunday morning with the “Adjudicators’ Picks” – featuring
ensembles recommended by our faculty.

Central Washington University
Wind Ensemble
The Central Washington University Wind Ensemble has gained the reputation as being
one of the nation’s outstanding undergraduate wind ensembles, performing at state,
regional, and national conferences.
On five different occasions, the ensemble has performed at the MENC Northwest Division
Conference under the direction of Professor Larry Gookin. The Wind Ensemble has
performed at the National CBDNA in Boulder, the National MENC in Minneapolis, the
CBDNA Division Conferences in Reno, The Western International Band Clinics in Seattle,
and several State WMEA conferences. The group also has received invitations to perform
at the prestigious American Bandmasters Association conferences.
The CWU Wind Ensemble performs contemporary and traditional literature, seeking a
balance between transcriptions, marches, and original wind ensemble compositions. The
ensemble is frequently involved in new composition consortiums for Wind Band, including
composers David Maslanka, Roger Cichy, Gregory Youtz, Thomas Sleeper, Shelley Hanson,
David Gillingham, and Mark Camphouse.
Former members of the CWU Symphonic Wind Ensemble currently perform in orchestras,
service bands, jazz bands, community bands, and various chamber ensembles throughout
the country. Many graduates have continued their education as teaching assistants at
outstanding graduate schools, and many have become exemplary music teachers in the
public schools, in private study, and in higher education.

Guest Soloist: Adam Pelandini
Saxophonist Dr. Adam Pelandini is an active performer, clinician and music educator
based in the Pacific Northwest. Formerly an active performer in Boston, MA, his recent
engagements include performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra where he
worked with conductors Andris Nelsons, Robert Spano and Stéphane Denève in Boston’s
historic Symphony Hall and the Tanglewood Music Center’s Koussevitsky Music Shed.
While performing with the BSO, his playing was described as “sensitive,” with “tonal
richness” and “pinpoint tuning” by The Boston Musical Intelligencer. Other recent
performances include the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra (MA), the Monadnock Festival
(NH), the Portland Symphony Orchestra (ME) and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra
(MA) working with a multitude of conductors including Gil Rose, Gunther Schuller, David
Loebel and Benjamin Zander. During the Summers of 2011 and 2012, he was invited to
perform with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra in Lenox, MA where he worked with
conductors Stephan Asbury and Miguel Harth-Bedoya performing staples of the orchestral
saxophone repertoire and chamber music. He has also recently performed with the Alea
III New Music Ensemble, Acoustic Uproar, The Stone in New York City and ChagallPAC with
saxophonists Jean-Michel Goury, Pierre-Stephan Mouget and Serge Bertocchi.
As a soloist, Adam has performed in numerous recitals and masterclasses across the
United States. He was a featured performer at the North American Saxophone Alliance
regional conferences in Salem, MA (2012) and the United States Military Academy in West
Point, NY (2010). In November, 2012 he was invited to give a recital and masterclass at
Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA. A proponent of new music, Adam has
collaborated with renowned composers including Gunther Schuller, Michael Gandolfi,
Lei Liang, Matti Kovler, James Yannatos, Matthew Kaner and many others. He has also
participated in several World Premier performances including most recently: Ketty Nez’s
Thresholds for Piano and Wind Ensemble as principal alto saxophone with the Boston
University Wind Ensemble.

Vancouver Youth Choir
The Vancouver Youth Choir is the lower mainland’s newest choir for singers aged 15-23.
Founded by Carrie Tennant, the Vancouver Youth Choir provides an opportunity for
advanced singers to pursue challenging and eclectic music in a supportive and joyful
environment. Artistry and authentic communication are the goals of this young choir, who
present music from Fleet Foxes to Gyorgy Orban. The choir began its very first season
in the fall of 2013, and at Christmas presented its first concert in collaboration with the
VSO School of Music Children's Choir. This spring, VYC participated in a private workshop
with Rajaton (Finland), shared the stage in concerts with Kamiak Choirs (Seattle, WA),
Glendora High School choirs (Glendora, CA), and Rhythm N’ Roots Choir, and collaborated
with several local high school choirs in the lower mainland. In their second season, the
Vancouver Youth Choir is excited to announce that they will be an Associate Choir of the
Vancouver Chamber Choir. As an Associate Choir, VYC will perform in three concerts with
the Vancouver Chamber Choir, including, in spring of 2015, the Faure Requiem at the
Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver. VYC is thrilled to be participating in the Whistler Cantando
Festival.

Adjudicators
Chee Meng Low (Concert Band)
Chee Meng Low, a native of Malaysia, is the director
of the University of Lethbridge Wind Orchestra, as
well as the instructor of saxophone and musicianship
skills. He is also involved with the Symphonic Winds
of NSO Malaysia, UofL Faculty Wind Sextet, Edmonton
Saxophone Quartet, and has performed as a soloist
and chamber musician in Canada, Europe and Asia.
Chee Meng has previously held positions in the
Thailand Saxophone Ensemble (2005-2009), Thailand
Philharmonic Orchestra (2007-2009), Southeast
Asian Youth Wind Ensemble (2001, 2002), WASBE
International Youth Wind Orchestra (2005), and also a
fellowship with the ASEAN Youth Culture Camp (2001).
During 2007-2010, Chee Meng served as the Assistant Communications and Planning
Manager for the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, developing the education & outreach
programs, as well as implementing the daily operations of the orchestra. In addition to
that, he also served as one of the saxophone instructors for the College of Music, Mahidol
University, coaching private lessons, saxophone quartet and saxophone ensemble and
serving the College as assistant to the Deputy Director for Academic and Research Affairs.
A recipient of the University of Alberta FS Chia Doctoral Scholarship, Chee Meng holds
a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree from the University of Alberta Canada, under the
guidance of William Street (saxophone) and Dennis Prime (conducting). While working on
his degree, Chee Meng taught Band Technique and Aural Skills courses at the University
of Alberta and served as the Graduate Teaching Assistant for the saxophone ensemble,
symphonic wind ensemble, and concert band.
Chee Meng was a member of the International Committee, World Saxophone Congress
(2006-2009), regional representative of the Asia Pacific Band Directors’ Association (20072010), and current member of the North American Saxophone Alliance and Alberta Band
Association.

Larry Gookin (Concert Band)
Larry Gookin has been Director of Bands at Central
Washington University since 1981. Currently he serves
as the Associate Chair, Coordinator of Graduate Studies,
Director of Bands and conductor of the Wind Ensemble.
His fields of expertise include music education, wind
literature, conducting, and low brass performance.
The CWU Wind Ensemble has performed at state, regional
and national conventions, including the College Band
Directors National Association Conference in Boulder;
the Music Educators National Conference in Minneapolis;
the Western International Band Clinics in Seattle, and the
Western/Northwestern CBDNA Division Conferences in
Reno. The ensemble has twice been invited to perform at
the prestigious American Bandmasters Association National Conference.
Professor Gookin received the M.M. in Music Education from the University of Oregon
School of Music in 1977 and the B.M in Music Education and Trombone Performance
from the University of Montana in 1971. He taught band for 10 years in public schools
in Montana and Oregon. Prior to accepting the position as Director of Bands at Central
Washington University, he was Director of Bands at South Eugene H.S in Eugene, Oregon.
Gookin has served as president of the Northwestern Division of the CBDNA, as well as
Divisional Chairman for the National Band Association. He is past Vice President of the
Washington Music Educators Association. In 1992 he was elected to the membership
of the American Bandmasters Association, and in 2000 he became a member of the
Washington Music Educators “Hall of Fame.” In 2001, Gookin received the Central
Washington University Distinguished Professor of Teaching Award, and in 2003 was
named WMEA teacher of the year. In 2004, he was selected as Central Washington
University’s representative for the Carnegie Foundation (CASE) teaching award. He is a
past recipient of the “Citation of Excellence Award” from the National Band Association,
the “Mac” award from First Chair of America, and the American Schools Band Directors
Association “Standbury Award.” Most recently, Gookin received the University of Oregon’s
2008 School of Music Distinguished Alumnus Award.
From 1996 to 2002 Gookin was the Music Director of the Washington Ambassadors of
Music, leading biennial European tours with over 150 high school musicians from the
State of Washington. The tours included performances in London, Paris, Switzerland,
Austria, and Germany.
Professor Gookin has appeared as clinician, adjudicator, and conductor in the United
States, Canada, Japan, Southeast Asia, and Europe. He is former principal trombone of
the Eugene and Yakima Symphony Orchestras. Gookin resides in Ellensburg, Washington
with his wife Karen, who teaches English at CWU and performs on piccolo and flute with
the Yakima Symphony Orchestra.

Mark Lane (Concert Band)
Mark Lane comes to CWU after 27 years of public school
teaching. Mr. Lane serves as Associate Director of Bands,
Associate Professor of Music Education, and oversees
the collegiate chapter of the National Association for
Music Education. He holds a BA from Eastern Washington
University and a MA from the University of Oregon.
Under Mr. Lane’s direction, the CWU Symphonic Band
grew to over 100 musicians and gained a reputation
of excellence throughout the Northwest. Recently, we
added a third ensemble, The Symphonic Winds. Mr.
Lane conducts the Symphonic Winds and Co-Directs
the Symphonic Band with Professor Larry Gookin. The
Symphonic Winds and Symphonic Band study and
perform a musically diverse repertoire, ranging from
traditional band literature to contemporary music of the highest caliber for wind band.
Mr. Lane was awarded Educator of the Year five times and has received two Citations
of Excellence from the National Band Association. During his tenure at Kennewick, the
program was awarded the Tri-City Crystal Apple Award for excellence in education.
The music program also received three GRAMMY Signature Awards. In 2001, Mark was
awarded the Sudler Order of Merit of the John Phillip Sousa Foundation and was inducted
into the BAND WORLD Legion of Honor in 2001. In 2012, Mark was awarded the Crystal
Apple Award at CWU for excellence in teacher preparation. Most recently, Mark was
inducted into the Washington Music Educators Association Hall of Fame. Mark’s groups
have performed at the Oregon State Music Educators Conference, the Washington Music
Educators Conference, the National Association for Music Education Northwest Division
Conference, and the Western International Band Clinic. In addition, his groups performed
at the 1994 and 2002 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade and the 1999 and 2001 Bands
of America National Concert Band Festival. In 2010 and 2012, Mark was the director of the
Washington Ambassadors of Music for Voyageurs International.
Mark is a frequent clinician and adjudicator around the Northwest and has conducted and
has presented clinics in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico and Alaska and
Europe. His articles on music education have been published in the Washington, Oregon,
Idaho, Montana, Alaska, and Wyoming Music Educators Journals, Fanfare Magazine,
Bands of America, Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association Journal, the National
Federation Interscholastic Music Association Journal, Conn/Selmer Touchpoint, and the
Association of Secondary Administrators Journal. Mark is a member of the National
Association for Music Education, and the College Band Directors National Association and
served on the Washington Music Educators Executive Board for fourteen years. He served
as President of WMEA from 2008-2010. Mark is currently President for the Northwest
Division of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and serves on the
National Executive Board for the organization. He also serves on the National Collegiate
Advisory Council for NAfME.

Allan McMurray (Concert Band)
Allan McMurray is Distinguished Professor and Professor
of Conducting Emeritus at the University of Colorado.
He served for 35 years as Director of Bands and Chair
of the Conducting Faculty before retiring from CU at the
end of the 2013 academic year. Prior to this position,
he was on the faculty of the University of Michigan,
Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and University
of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Considered one of the world’s
leading teachers of conducting, Professor McMurray has
guest conducted and taught conductors in 48 states and
13 foreign countries. He has been a featured visiting
professor and conductor at over 200 universities and
conservatories internationally.
During his tenure at Colorado, the University of Colorado
Wind Symphony performed by invitation at major conferences and conventions, including
the First International Conference for Symphonic Bands in Manchester, England; the
All-Japan Band Conference in Nemo Nu Sato, Japan; the College Band Directors National
Association Convention (twice); and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and
Ensembles in Hamamatsu, Japan. The ensemble has also released two CDs on the
Klavier label featuring original works by Daneil Kellogg, Carter Pann and Frank Ticheli;
and collaboration with the Kakacs String Quartet, Patrick Mason, baritone, and Jennifer
Bird-Arvidson, soprano.
With a strong commitment to new music, Allan McMurray has been a strong proponent
in commissioning and performing new composition by American composers. He has
won praise for his interpretive and expressive conducting by many composers, including
Pulitzer Prize winners Michael Colgrass, George Crumb, John Harbison, Karel Husa, and
Steven Stucky. Professor McMurray’s internationally acclaimed DVD series on the Art of
Conducting includes three DVDs and he is currently working on a companion textbook to
the series.
Allan McMurray has received numerous honors and awards. He is Past-President of the
College Band Directors National Association, he is recipient of the Bohumil Makovsky Award
for outstanding College Band Directors from the National Band Fraternity, Kappa Kappa
Psi, and has been recognized by California State University Long Beach as “Distinguished
Artist in Classical Music.” In December 2004, the Board of Regents of the University of
Colorado designated Allan McMurray as the university’s 25th Distinguished Professor in
recognition of his lifetime professional achievement in the teaching of conducting.
Allan McMurray remains active as an artist conductor, teacher and author. His recent
schedule includes professional activity in California, Colorado, Oregon, Wisconsin, Illinois,
New York, Washington D.C., Georgia, Florida, Canada and Australia.

Don Owens (Concert Band)
Don Owens, Coordinator Emeritus of the Jazz
Studies and Pedagogy Program, Director Emeritus,
Contemporary Music Ensemble, and the National High
School Music Institute at Northwestern University,
began his tenure at Northwestern University in 1979.
Before coming to Northwestern, he taught for twelve
years at Evanston (Illinois) Township High School
where his duties included directing band, brass
ensembles, and jazz band, as well as teaching classes
in music theory, popular music, and composition.
Owens received the Bachelor of Music Education
degree from North Texas State University, where he
also studied Composition and Jazz. His Master of
Musical Arts degree is from the University of Illinois,
where he majored in Composition. He studied
composition with Morgan Powell, Merrill Ellis,
Samuel Adler, and Salvatore Martirano. He has won
several grants and awards, and is regularly commissioned for new works.
In his first few years at Northwestern, Mr. Owens conducted the Nationally renowned
Jazz Ensemble, directed the “Wildcat” Marching Band and Symphonic Band, and taught
advanced Method classes for undergraduate Music Education Majors. He eventually was
appointed Coordinator of the Jazz Studies and Pedagogy Program, teaching courses in
Jazz Writing, Seminar in Jazz Pedagogy, Jazz in the Public Schools, and conducted the Jazz
Ensemble. In addition to Owens’ responsibilities in the Jazz area, he served as Director
and Primary Conductor of the internationally acclaimed Contemporary Music Ensemble
for over 20 years. This group performed over 200 world premiers, as well as the standard
20th century repertory. Mr. Owens is an internationally recognized clinician/conductor.
He has served as an adjudicator and has conducted Festival and All-State Concert and Jazz
Bands in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland
and Michigan.

Dave Robbins (Jazz Band)
Dave Robbins is one of Canada’s premier jazz drummers and a first-rate
composer, arranger and jazz educator. Though well known as a sideman
for his exciting big band work and sensitive trio playing, Robbins also
leads his own bands.
Dave grew up in Victoria and was educated at McGill University in
Montreal where he received his Masters in Jazz Studies. While in
Montreal he toured and recorded in bands with Vic Vogel, Joe Sullivan,
Altsys, and the Streetnix among others. In 1996 he could no longer
resist the pull of the west coast, and is thrilled to have moved back. He is kept very busy
playing with Bill Coon, Dee Daniels, Hugh Fraser, Oliver Gannon, John Korsrud, and Jennifer
Scott, to name a few.
Dave has played music all over the world, in countries such as Australia, Brazil, Cuba,
Finland, France, and Ireland. Musicians he has performed with include: Gary Bartz,
Maynard Ferguson, Slide Hampton, Buddy Montgomery, Bob Minzer, PJ Perry, and
Don Thompson. Dave is also very involved as an educator. After teaching at McGill’s
Conservatory of Music while in Montreal, he is now on the music faculty at Capilano
University where he instructs arranging, drums, piano, and large ensembles. As well as
institutional educating, Dave does clinics and private instructing.
Brad Turner (Jazz Band)
Brad Turner’s phenomenal talents as a trumpeter, pianist,
drummer and composer make him one of Canada’s most
in-demand and highly esteemed musicians. Brad has performed
and/or recorded with such artists as Joe Lovano, Kenny Wheeler,
John Scofield, Michael Moore, Reneé Rosnes, Jimmy Greene,
Ingrid Jensen, Dylan van der Schyff, Mike Murley, Seamus Blake,
Charles McPherson and Michael Blake. Brad’s groups have
opened for McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Wayne Shorter, Clark
Terry, Diana Krall and Tony Bennett.
As a leader, Brad has released six albums, five as a trumpeter
with his quartet, the most recent being the 2007 release Small Wonder.
What Is, released in 2005, won Best Jazz Album, at the 2006 Western Canadian Music
Awards. As a pianist with his trio, the 2004 release, Question the Answer was nominated
for a 2005 Canadian Urban Music Award, and a 2006 Canadian Indie Music Award.
In 1997 and 1998 Brad won Juno Awards for Best Contemporary Jazz Album recognizing
his work in the internationally established electric jazz group Metalwood. Winner of
National Jazz Awards for Jazz Composer of the Year (2000 and 2002), Brad was awarded
Musician of the Year for 2005, and was a recipient of 2006 Victor Lynch-Staunton Prize for
excellence in musical achievement.
Brad took home National Jazz Awards this year for Trumpeter of the Year and Producer
of the year.

Jared Burrows (Jazz Band)
Dr. Jared Burrows is the Academic Coordinator of the Jazz
Studies Department and teaches improvisation, conducting,
arranging, and directs small and large ensembles. He is
a dynamic force on the Vancouver scene as a performer,
composer and community organizer. He works in a huge variety
of ensembles in jazz, new music, and world music settings and
leads the Jared Burrows Quartet and Sextet and the Vancouver
Improvisers Orchestra. Jared performs as a sideman with
Dave Robbins Electric Band, the Offering of Curtis Andrews,
Sancharam Trio, Delta Quartet, Michael Vlatkovich Quintet,
Colin MacDonald’s Pocket Orchestra, Koan, Len Aruliah Sextet,
and the Brad Muirhead 4tet, to name only a few.
Before coming to Capilano, Jared taught at Douglas College,
Simon Fraser University, University of Oregon, and the Stanford Jazz Workshop. Since 2008
he has curated the weekly Jazz at Presentation House concert series in North Vancouver.
Past community music leadership roles include the South Delta Jazz Festival and Jazz
Workshop (founder and co-director 2003-2013), Freedom Festival of Improvised Music
(founder and artistic director 2000-2005), the Hundredth Monkey new music ensemble
(co-founder and co-director 1998-2000), and East Van Jazz Orchestra (co-founder and
co-director 2007-2010).
In addition to performing and composing, his research interests include cognitive
theories applied to improvisation and Confucian, Taoist and Sufi philosophies applied to
problems in music education. His work has been presented in academic conferences and
in guest lectures across Canada, the US and the UK and has been published in College
Music Symposium, Jazz Educators Journal, BC Music Educators Journal, Critical Studies in
Improvisation, and in the Oxford Handbook of Critical Improvisation Studies.
Jared holds a PhD in Arts Education from Simon Fraser University. His doctoral research
explored an alternative paradigm for music education based on improvisation and his
thesis supervisor was the pianist and philosopher, Yaroslav Senyshyn. He has a MMus
in Jazz Studies from the University of Oregon where he was mentored by the great
educator and musician, Steve Owen and studied composition under Robert Kyr and David
Crumb. His early teachers included Rudolph Komorous, Martin Gotfrit, David MacIntyre
(composition) and Ihor Kukurudza (guitar).

Carrie Tennant (Choral)
Carrie Tennant is the Artistic Director and founder
of the Vancouver Youth Choir. Carrie began her
career as a high school choir director, building a
nationally recognized choral program at Maple
Ridge Secondary School before deciding to pursue
graduate studies in choral conducting in 2009.
From 2009-2012 Carrie directed the Vancouver
Chor Leoni MYVoice Choir and the Sarah
McLachlan Youth Choir. In 2012, Carrie worked as
the assistant conductor to Diane Loomer, and in
that role, conducted Chor Leoni in several major
performances. In January of 2013 Carrie was
selected to succeed Diane as Artistic Director of EnChor.
Currently, on top of her work with Vancouver Youth Choir and EnChor, Carrie is the
conductor of the award-winning Coastal Sound Youth Choir, and Associate Artistic
Director of Coastal Sound Music Academy. Under Carrie’s direction, Coastal Sound has
been featured on CBC Radio, and this summer will be the subject of documentary for Telus
Optik TV. Repeated award winners at the National Music Festival, in 2013 Coastal Sound
was awarded first place in the youth choir category at the ACCC National Competition for
Amateur Choirs, and was chosen, along with Elektra Women’s Choir, to represent Canada
at the 2013 Chorus America Conference. In 2013, Carrie founded the Vancouver Youth
Choir. This season, the choir will be an Associate Choir of the Vancouver Chamber Choir
and will perform with them at three season concerts.
Carrie is an Affliate Conductor with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, an Artist-in-Residence
with the Vancouver School Board, and is a frequent clinician, adjudicator and retreat
facilitator across Canada. A passionate advocate for building and sustaining community
among BC choirs and conductors, in 2010 she helped found the “BC Choral Mentorship
Project”: a collective that brings together expert speakers/conductors with choral directors
for masterclasses, discussion groups and lectures. In 2008, Carrie was the recipient of
the BCCF Youth Achievement Award for distinguished support of choral music in British
Columbia.
Carrie also tours, performs and records as a member of Vancouver-based indie-pop group,
the Salteens (Boompa Records).

Jennifer Moir (Choral)
Jennifer Moir is a highly respected conductor, educator and
adjudicator with a growing international reputation. She is the
recipient of numerous teaching awards and was honoured with
the distinguished Leslie Bell Prize Award for Choral Conducting
from the Ontario Art Council in 2004. In May of 2010, she was
nominated for the Premiere’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts, in
the category of Emerging Artists.
At Western University, Jennifer conducts Les Choristes (women’s
choir) and The Chorale (mixed choir) at the Don Wright Faculty of
Music. She teaches Vocal Methods for the Department of Music
Education and also maintains a voice studio through the Department of Performance
Studies.
Outside of Western, Jennifer is invited regularly to serve as a clinician for vocal and choral
festivals and leads workshops for performers and educators in both Europe and North
America. In 2009, she was the guest artist in residence at the Sibelius Academy and
the Konservatori in Helsinki, Finland, and in 2010 served as language coach for Finnish
ensemble, Rajaton. In 2015 she will adjudicate at the Tampere International Choral
Festival, Tampere, Finland.
A passionate advocate for music education in schools as well as in community arts
organizations, Jennifer has served on faculty with The Voice Care Network, based at St.
John’s University, Minnesota, and was the Artistic Director for the Woodstock Fanshawe
Singers from 2004 – 2014. Jennifer is the founder and Artistic Director of The Kaleid Choral
Festival “a kaleidoscope of voices” based in Woodstock ON. This non- competitive festival
is designed for singers of all ages and levels of experience to be educated, energized
and inspired through workshops and performances with internationally acclaimed
guest artists. Since 2005, Kaleid has played host to acclaimed guest artists from Canada
(Cadence, Freeplay Duo) , Zimbabwe (Black Umfolosi Five) and Finland (Rajaton).
Jennifer Riley (Choral)
Jennifer Riley is a Choral and Band director at Mark R Isfeld
Secondary School in the Comox Valley where she teaches
Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Concert Band and Vocal
Jazz. As founder and Artistic Director of Cantiamo Chamber
Ensemble, an auditioned youth chamber ensemble in the
Comox Valley, Jennifer is kept busy helping singers pursue
their love of choral music. Cantiamo has recorded four
CDs and travelled nationally and internationally. Riley has
directed a number of community and church choirs over
the past 15 years, including the Campbell River Singers,
Celebration Singers and Trinity Choir. She has been a
clinician for local choral festivals and workshops and has
taught private voice lessons for nine years. Jennifer received
a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Education from Brandon University.

Scott Leithead (Choral)
Scott Leithead is the Artistic Director of Edmonton’s Kokopelli
Choir Association and TIME Association. He has conducted
provincial and state honour choirs on seventeen occasions and
has presented workshops across North America and beyond.
Notable appearances include: conducting the Alberta Youth
Choir for the Alberta Choral Federation’s 40th Anniversary;
adjudicating both the ACCC National Competition for Amateur
Canadian Choirs and the International Kathaumixw Festival.
In 2008, Scott was on sabbatical in Namibia where he worked
with the Mascato Youth Choir and numerous other choirs from
southern Africa. Scott is a longtime member of the advisory committee for the Canadian
Rocky Mountain Festival. He is the president of the Brailletone Music Society for persons
with disabilities and a member of three additional national boards as well as the National
Youth Music and Art Development Foundation of South Africa. In 2014/15 he will present
workshops across Canada and return to conduct numerous honour choirs including: The
New Brunswick Youth Choir and The Ellison Canadian Honour Choir.
