Who EMPOWER, What and Career Trek Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that helps young people discover the importance of education and career development by providing hands-on career-oriented programming at post-secondary institutions across Manitoba. INSPIRE CHANGE LIVES Career Trek Inc. programming helps children and youth develop essential skills for life and learning, building a foundation for a skilled workforce, a responsible community, and a thriving economy. By exposing children to direct career activity in up to 80 occupations and professions, they become aware of multiple career opportunities and begin to get a sense of their likes, dislikes, and interests. When Career Trek Inc. has four programs that run on the weekends and three that run on weekday evenings. Program lengths vary from three weekends to 20 Saturdays, depending on the program. Where Career Trek Inc. runs programs in the Winnipeg, Westman, Parkland, and NOR-MAN regions of Manitoba and visits local post-secondary institutions such as The University of Manitoba, The University of Winnipeg, Red River College, Brandon University, Assiniboine Community College, University College of the North, and the Northern Manitoba Mining Academy. Participants spend one night a week for 12 weeks (Feb. to May) visiting the University of Manitoba, The University of Winnipeg, and Red River College. Led by university or college students, they spend two hours an evening getting hands-on experiences in a wide variety of occupations. For the project to be successful, students and their families need to be committed. Students are expected to maintain excellent attendance, actively engage in lessons, and contribute to a positive learning environment. Delivered in association with the Seven Oaks School Division, this after-school project exposes participants in grades 5 and 6 to as many occupations and professions as possible. 60 participants from Elwick School, O.V. Jewitt School, and École Leila North receive hands-on experiences in approximately 24 occupations and professions. The project is infused with a career development focus that helps participants discover and explore their likes, dislikes, and skills helping them understand the relevance of their studies, grasp educational opportunities, and chart their future career paths. The Seven Oaks Project helps children learn about themselves and develop the essential skills necessary for success in the competitive job market of the future. Transportation: Bus service is provided to all participants at no extra cost. Celebration: At the end of the project there will be a special event to recognize the participants’ hard work, effort, and dedication. Family Day: Family Day will give participants’ friends and family members an opportunity to experience a day in the life of a Trekker.
