APRIL 2015
Happy Spring Parkview Families!!
It seems that we are finally seeing some warmer temperatures and can officially start planning for spring.
Although the May 2nd snow day from last year still
looms in my mind, I am going to think spring and look
forward to all the good things that come with a change
in the season.
Here is what we have going on in April at Parkview:
The Chippewa Falls School District will be closed on
Friday, April 3rd in observance of Good Friday. Enjoy
the Easter holiday!
The big event this month is that we start our Badger
Exam Assessment in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades on April
17th. This will be a practice day for students and we will
officially start testing on Monday, April 20th. The assessment window at Parkview will run through May 8th. As
with other important state assessments, please make
sure that your child is well rested and has had a good
breakfast on the days that he/she is testing.
-
Parkview, along with the other elementary schools in
Chippewa Falls, worked on raising money for the Irvine
Park renovation during the first week of April. Any child
or staff member that donated at least $1.00 had an animal die cut put up on their classroom door. Our hope
was to raise $500 as a school which the PTO would
match for a total of $1000.00. I am very proud to say
that Parkview raised $1267.21! Along with the $500
from the PTO, we will be donating $1767.21 to the Irvine Park renovation project. Way to go Parkview!!
Our Title staff will be putting on a Rock N Read event
for students and parents of 4th and 5th grade students
on Tuesday, April 14th from 5:00-7:00 pm. There will be
food, activities, free books and games, and dancing!
These are always fun events so bring the family and
enjoy an evening at Parkview!
With possible severe weather coming in the spring
months, we want students and staff to be prepared
should a tornado or severe storm arise during school
hours. We will be practicing a tornado drill on Tuesday,
April 14th. Like any other drill, we want students to know
where to go and what to do here at school. Please talk
with your children about what to do at home, school and
other places should severe weather become an issue.
Kindergarten registration will be on Wednesday, April
29th at Parkview. If you have an incoming Parkview kindergartner, please call the office and set up a time to
participate in registration at (715) 720-3750. Also, a
reminder that all current kindergarten students are
not to come to school on Wednesday, April 29th.
A reminder that Wednesday, April 22nd is Administrative
Professionals Day. Stacey and Nancy do so much for
our students and staff throughout the year to keep our
kids safe and insure Parkview runs smoothly and efficiently. Please take some time to let them know that
you appreciate their efforts. Parkview is very lucky to
have such wonderful people at the front desk!
Finally, as I mentioned in my March newsletter, my due
date is fast approaching. When Baby Hoyt decides to
make her appearance, I will be taking the rest of the
year off. Beth Schultz will be my replacement and I’m
excited to have such a talented, caring person to step in
for me. I will be coming back occasionally to wrap up
the year, but will mostly be enjoying my time with my
girls. Thank you for your understanding!!
Happy thoughts for spring weather!!

Kindergarten Registration
It is time to call Parkview Elementary to register
your child for the 2015-2016 Kindergarten class.
Stacey or Nancy will be taking registration information by phone (715-720-3750) during regular
office hours (7:30 am to 3:30 pm).
All children who will be five on or before
September 1, 2015 are eligible for Kindergarten.
We will have a formal on-site Kindergarten
orientation on April 29th for those who preregistered.
Please inform other parents, neighbors, friends
and relatives that they need to call their area
school this month to register their child for
Kindergarten. Schools do not automatically
know that a child is old enough to attend
Kindergarten. We need a phone call for that
information (this includes children currently in
Early Childhood, Head Start and BB4C).

News From the Nurse
Lyme Disease
As the weather warms and the snow disappears
we’re all headed outdoors to enjoy the fresh air.
So are the ticks!
Deer Tick bites can spread Lyme Disease—an
infection that causes many symptoms including
rash, flu-like symptoms and muscle aches.
Ticks frequently live in shady, moist ground cover and also cling to tall grass, brush, shrubs,
and low tree branches. Lawns and gardens may
harbor ticks, especially at the edges of woods
and forests. When you do venture into the great
outdoors, follow these tips:



Wear a tick repellent
Wear light colored clothing
(ticks are easier to see)
Wear enclosed shoes and boots, longsleeved shirts, and long pants. Tuck pants
into boots or shoes to prevent ticks from
crawling up legs.


When outside, don't sit on the ground.
Check kids for ticks at least once per day—
especially the head, armpits, belly button,
groin, ears and behind the knees.
Wash all clothes after leaving tick-infested
areas
If you find a tick on the body, use tweezers to
grasp the tick firmly at its head or mouth, next to
the skin. Pull firmly and steadily on the tick until
it lets go, then swab the bite site with alcohol.
If you notice a bull's-eye rash or other symptoms that can occur in Lyme disease — such as
swollen lymph glands near a tick bite, general
achiness, headache, or fever — call your doctor
right away.

Lyme Disease
(Lyme borreliosis, Lyme arthritis)
Disease Fact Sheet Series
What is Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is an illness caused the bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi, that is transmitted by a tick
named Ixodes scapularis (commonly called black legged or the deer tick). Lyme disease may
cause symptoms affecting the skin, nervous system, heart and/or joints of an infected individual.
Over 20,000 cases of the disease have been reported in Wisconsin since surveillance for Lyme disease
began in 1980.
Why is it called Lyme disease?
The first cluster of cases associated with this infectious agent was discovered near the town of Lyme,
Connecticut.
Who gets Lyme disease?
Males and females of all ages can get Lyme disease. People who spend time outdoors in tickinfested
environments are at an increased risk of exposure. Most cases have reported an exposure
to ticks or woodland/brush habitat during the months of May through August, but exposure can occur
whenever the temperature at ground level is warm enough for ticks to be active. In Wisconsin, the
vast majority of cases have been acquired in the western two-thirds of the state. The northwestern
and west central portions of Wisconsin have the highest incidence of the disease.

April 2015
How is Lyme disease spread?
The disease is acquired by a tick bite. The deer ticks that transmit the Lyme disease bacterium
become infected when the immature stage of the tick feeds on infected field mice. When subsequent
stages of that tick feed again, the infection can be transmitted to the tick's new host. The tick must
actually be attached to a person's skin for about 24 hours before it can transmit the bacterium. The
bite of the tick is usually painless.
What are the symptoms of Lyme disease?
The illness usually occurs during the summer months and often starts as a roughly circular reddish
rash around or near the site of the tick bite. The rash expands in size over a period of days or weeks.
During the rash stage, other symptoms such as fever, headache, fatigue, stiff neck, muscle and/or
joint pain may be present. These may last for several weeks.
If left untreated, within a few weeks to months after the rash onset, complications such as meningitis,
facial palsy, heart abnormalities, and arthritis may occur. Swelling and pain in the large joints may
recur over several months or years in untreated Lyme disease. Not all persons with the disease
develop the initial skin rash.
How soon do symptoms occur?
The early symptoms usually begin within a month of exposure. The later arthritic, cardiac, and
neurologic problems can take weeks to months to appear.
Does past infection with Lyme disease make a person immune?
Past infection does provide some immunity, but that protection is relatively short-lived. It is possible
for a person to get infected more than once.
What is the treatment for Lyme disease?
The disease is treated with oral or injectable antibiotics.
What can be done to prevent the spread of Lyme disease?
If you are in areas where ticks may be present, the following precautions can reduce the risk of
acquiring Lyme disease:
• Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and high socks with pant cuffs tucked into the socks.
Light colored clothing will make ticks easier to find. Walk in the center of mowed trails to avoid
brushing up against vegetation.
• Conduct thorough "tick checks" on yourself and your children after spending time outdoors.
Prompt removal of ticks, even after they have attached, can drastically reduce the chance of
Lyme disease transmission.
• Insect repellents containing 0.5% permethrin or 20-30% DEET have been shown to be
effective in repelling deer ticks. If such products are used, be sure to follow the manufacturer's
directions on the label.
• Although there had been a vaccine against human Lyme disease, it is no longer marketed.
How should a tick be removed?
To remove an attached tick, grasp it with narrow-bladed tweezers or forceps as close as possible to
attachment (skin) site, and pull upward and out with a firm and steady tension. If tweezers are not
available, use fingers shielded with tissue paper or rubber gloves. Do not handle with bare hands. Be
careful not to squeeze, crush or puncture the body of the tick that may contain infectious fluids. After
removing the tick, thoroughly disinfect the bite site and wash hands. See or call a doctor if there is a
concern about incomplete tick removal. It is important that a tick be properly removed as soon as it is
discovered.

CONGRATULATIONS!
Parkview has a TV located on the west wall by the display cases in Central Park.
It is used for announcements of upcoming events and general information for the school.
The screen changes continually throughout the day showing each event many times. We
allow you the opportunity to place an “ad” for your child that will run on Wednesdays. This is
used as a fundraiser for the PTO. The ad will cost $5.00 and will include a picture of your
child (after the pictures are taken if they are in kindergarten or new to Parkview), their
first name and a short message from you!
The PTO funds many things for Parkview including playground equipment and toys, field
trips and sound systems for the classroom teachers so the money will be used for your children at Parkview in some way.
If you would like to place an ad fill out the form on the bottom half of this flyer and send it,
with $5.00, to the Parkview office at least two days before the ad will appear.
Thank you, Parkview PTO.
