Dear Friends in Christ,
Can you imagine how Mary felt when she went to Jesus' tomb? It was early in the morning––before six
a.m. She had gone to pay her respects. She had gone
to grieve.
Then Mary saw a man whom she supposed to be the
gardener. She saw the man dimly through her tears.
Perhaps he knew what had happened. Perhaps he had
even assisted in the removal of Jesus' body from the tomb. "Sir, if you have carried
him away, tell me where you have laid him…" (v. 15). Then Jesus said her name––
"Mary." Mary knew the voice. She responded, "Rabbouni." She listened to Jesus as
long as he would stay with her, and then she set out to find the disciples. She told
them, "I have seen the Lord" (v. 18).
Can you imagine how Mary felt? Her grief turned to joy in the time it took for Jesus
to say her name. It was the kind of joy that could not be contained. She had to run
and tell the other disciples that Jesus was alive. One little word, her name, changed
everything.
That is what Jesus does for us at Easter. We come to the tomb remembering the pain
of the cross, the loss of all our hope. Do you remember how the disciples on to road to
Emmaus described Jesus, “WE HAD HOPED that he was the one to redeem Israel”.
But Jesus restored their hope in the time it took him to break a loaf of bread. Their
grief was transformed and their joy could not be contained. They didn’t care that it
was nighttime, they had to run back to Jerusalem to tell the other disciples Christ was
alive.
Christ came to transform lives, and he has proven over and over that he is capable of
doing that. Christ transformed Mary's life when he called her name. He transformed
the disciple’s lives in the breaking of the bread. He can transform your life. Whatever
you need, Christ can provide!

DEACON’S CORNER — APRIL 2015
October 27, 2013 was the last Sunday Service for Pastor Munz. This past Sunday,
March 22, 2015 was the first Sunday Service for Pastor Mark. This adds up to 510 days
between these two dates. 510 days in which we, as a congregation, were constantly challenged. We were challenged to continue to be a place where God’s word is proclaimed
through both words and actions. We were challenged to remember that we are a family
and need to love and forgive one another. We were challenged in big ways and smaller
ways (like having someone remember to turn the heat off!)
As I look back on this period, I am grateful to so many people who stepped up to provide
leadership. Problems did arise but solutions to these problems and someone to address them also arose.
We were very fortunate to have Chris Swaine and then Alan Cunningham as Council Presidents during
this time period. The two of them provided strong leadership when our congregation needed it most.
This past year, Alan has had to deal with so many unique administrative situations regarding the call process. He spent a great deal of time following up on all of this. We all owe him our gratitude for his dedication to our congregation.
In addition to our Council Presidents, many other people stepped up to provide leadership during our
transition period. As a result, we have evolved from a congregation where the pastor did everything to a
congregation where lay leaders are taking more responsibility. It is my hope that this will continue and
we will not “burn out” our new pastor! We were fortunate to have an interim pastor for 13 months before
we had to rely on supply pastors and a coverage pastor. Thanks to all of them for getting us through the
transition period.
Communication was a big problem in the absence of a full time pastor and it still seems to be an issue. I
would encourage everyone to pay attention and ask questions. There is no attempt on any level to keep
anything secretive. The names of all Council members are published in every issue of The Steward and
prior to every monthly Council Meeting, there is a member of Council to take congregational comments
after each service. Joe Callis is the current Council President and now there is a pastor to speak with regarding any concerns. In my opinion, these are all better options than complaining about our congregation on social media sites.
After speaking with many of you, it is apparent to me that all of us are very happy we have a new pastor!
We have so much to celebrate – our new pastor and 100 years of ministry!

Now for a moment of history:
In 1915 Zane Grey dedicated his book THE LONE STAR RANGER to a Texas Ranger
friend – which you can easily imagine has a connection to the future Lone Ranger character – but not anything to do with our own struggles in the wild west of Germantown.
So, Kemo Sabe, stay with us as we return to those thrilling days of yesteryear (before
the Lone Ranger) when our pioneers, those rugged Lutherans, were claiming turf in then
Germantown.
Establishing a congregation was no doubt strenuous, time consuming and required more focus than reading a Zane Grey novel and knowing very much about the
goings on in the world – no TV, Internet and no broadcast radio into homes until 1920.
Meanwhile, even before 1914, lotsa countries in Europe were at war with lotsa
other countries – declarations were a dime a dozen – until it all solidified into what we
know as WW1 when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated
in Sarajevo by a Serb! This was in June and by July these two countries were at war.
For all we can only guess about, our pioneers would have not known much of
this unless through any newspaper available. Also, war correspondents were not always
able to get their stories through and, as things got hotter and more of the big guys got
into it, sometimes correspondence was censored.
There is no one around anymore to ask – Did you know much about this war?…
Possibly the Titanic sinking in 1912?… Or how, in 1913, New York City had a big
problem with too many billboards showing up on historical landmarks? (After all, no
TV, etc!)
As battles progressed, our beach heads were definitely more local – our Germantown, previously covered nowhere, was now covered worldwide with names of German
towns. Again, newspaper coverage was the source and the Daily News only came to us
in 1919.
While the U.S. was not in the war at first, it did have voice…in 1915 we sent a
note to Germany protesting the sinking of the Lusitania and this was not our only verbal
confrontation. Then in 1917, April 6, we officially entered the war and by June 25 our
first troops landed in France.
And so it went on, but there weren’t any newsreels to keep us informed of the
gore, as movies were in the early stages also --- “Birth of a Nation” released silently in
1915, Chaplin’s first contract, technicolor in experimentation and other research (Edison
was in on all this). So, no newsreels, no TV, no broadcast radio… one can only wonder
if everyone knew that Woodrow Wilson was president, if we had to endure the stigma
of being called Germantown…and if we knew that in 1918, just before the end of the
war, a U.S. cruiser was sunk by torpedo just off Fire Island.
We return now to the thrilling days of – info overload – Hi, Ho Silver!

SELF ESTEEM IN RELATIONSHIPS is a program to help women find
support and encouragement as they develop self-awareness and selfesteem. Ascension Lutheran Church in Deer Park invites women from the
area to inquire about this FREE and CONFIDENTIAL 8 week program,

Notes from the Stewardship Committee
Church envelopes have changed
By now everyone should have received their offering envelopes for April, May
and June. Just to give everyone some background information about what we
have done with the delivery of envelopes this year, we decided to try having the
envelope company mail out our envelopes for us four times a year instead of
volunteers at church addressing and bulk mailing the church membership a
booklet with all of the envelopes for the entire year. We initially had some
startup issues but we now have everything under control. Everyone can expect
to receive a book of envelopes in the last week of June for July through September and another delivery in the last week of September for October through December. If there are any questions, comments or concerns you may have, feedback is a gift so please feel free to contact Peter Sharrock.
E-GIVING
Did you know that you can have your weekly offering given to church every
week automatically without an envelope? There are quite a few parishioners
that take advantage of E-Giving. Every week their designated offering is taken
out of their bank account and sent directly to church. It’s very simple and you
don’t have to worry about forgetting your envelope when you come to church,
or for that matter your weekly offering will be at church when you are not able
to attend.
