WELCOME!
This event celebrates
the importance of Mission
Viejo’s investment in the arts,
economy, education and a
healthy civic life.
The arts help us discover new worlds and explore our
own creativity. Art encourages
children to love learning, develop a strong sense of self and
to “think outside the box.”
Nearly a decade ago,
the City forged partnerships
with arts and cultural organizations, schools, businesses and
government agencies to host
this grand annual event. The
goal is to ensure residents grow
up rich in the creative experiences of the arts. Mission Viejo
has a wealth of art talent with
the potential to bloom. Arts
Alive provides such an
awesome opportunity.
Patrons to this year’s
Arts Alive Festival will enjoy a
cornucopia of art, culture and
entertainment as well as a
spectacular new Food & Wine
Festival.
The Food & Wine
Festival will feature a host of
local restaurants and caterers,
California wines, craft beer and
non-alcoholic drinks. The
Food & Wine Festival comple-
ments the event that will
celebrate the arts and culture
of the 1980s and boast chalk
street painting; community
collaborative projects; arts and
craft vendors; interactive art
workshops for all ages; and live
entertainment.

2015 FEATURED ARTIST
GUS MORAN
It was more than a decade ago
when Gus Moran created his first chalk
mural at a festival in Pasadena. He was
invited to the event by another artist and
fell in love with this dynamic form of art.
“I always drew pictures or painted
since I can remember … I started with
pencil and pen, markers, spray paint and
then acrylic paint on canvas,” he said.
“Today, I mostly paint acrylic on canvas
when I’m not on my knees doing chalk
murals.”
Having participated in Mission Viejo’s
festival along with events in Mexico, Germany,
Florida, Arizona, Bakersfield and San Diego, Gus
has certainly left his mark on this City and
communities around the world. He finds his inspiration from talents like Romero Britto, Pablo
Picasso and the many street artists he has met
over the last decade.
“I enjoy pop arts, anything abstract and I
have a fondness for beautiful and bright colors,”
he said.
Along with street paintings, Gus has created event
murals for KIND Natural
Snacks at the Anaheim Convention Center, Walking With
Dinosaurs at the Honda Center
and The Festival of Arts in Palm
Springs. When not painting, Gus
spends his time working as a
manager at the Mission Viejo
Michaels store.
He says art is more than a passion for
him, it’s also therapeutic. “For me art is more
than the finished pretty picture you see … it’s
years of struggle, pain, laughter, love and hope
that go into any mural I paint,” he said. “It’s
helped me to heal at some of my most vulnerable
times in my life. To me art is love and doesn’t this
world need more love? Picasso said all children
are artists, the hard part is remaining an artist
when we grow up.”
