Using Toners Tools and Materials: Towels Tail comb Gloves Plastic clips Cape Plastic or glass bowl Shampoo Hydrogen peroxide developer Acid or finishing cream Cotton protective cream Record card Toner Applicator bottle or brush Timer Preparation: 1. Pre-lighten the hair to appropriate stage of decolorization. 2. Gently shampoo hair, rinse, and towel dry. 3. Select tone shade. 4. Apply protective cream. 5. Perform strand test. 6. Mix toner. Procedure: 1. Part hair into four equal sections. 2. Apply toner at the crown of the head in ½ inch sections from the scalp to nearly the end of the hair. 3. Check a strand for color development; if it seems correct, work toner into ends of hair. 4. Apply additional toner if necessary; use plastic cap if required. 5. Time the procedure according to your strand test; check the hair frequently. 6. Wet the hair and massage to remove toner. 7. Rinse with warm water, shampoo, and rinse again. 8. Apply an acidic conditioner to close the cuticle, lower the pH, and help prevent fading. 9. Wipe off any stains from the skin or hairline. 10. Style as desired but try not to stretch the hair. Clean up: 1. Discard disposable items. 2. Close containers, wipe and store them. 3. Sanitize cape, tools and workstation. 4. Wash your hands with soap and water. 5. Rinse plastic bottles, bowls, and brushes, disinfect according to state chemical disposal regulations. 6. Complete your client’s record card and file for future use.
