It’s time for another edition of IMBA-SORBA’s Fat Tire Times! As you know,
we are working towards an improved look and standard layout of the FTT, and
in this edition you’ll see the handiwork of Bill Blount, SORBA Woodstock’s
Marketing/Communications Director. He’s stepped up to the plate and offered
to lend a hand with design. Bill does awesome work, and I’m excited to see
further evolutions of the FTT as we move along!
IMBA-SORBA continues to lead the way with mountain bike advocacy and
education efforts here in the southeast, and we are fortunate to have Augusta
chosen as the location for the 2010 IMBA World Summit. Go ahead and set aside some vacation days for May
5-8, this is an event that’s not to be missed.
We’ve got a couple of great events coming up right around the corner - notably the Helen Fat Tire Festival, with
activities happening at Unicoi State Park, the River Mist Lodge, and Woody’s Mountain Bikes. I’ll be heading up
to Helen for the festival, so I look forward to meeting plenty of IMBA-SORBA members there! Also, on October
17, SORBA Gwinnett will be putting on their Fat Tire Festival at Yellow River Park in Stone Mountain with plenty
of swag, demos, clinics, and a chance to win a NINER frame!

The Helen Fat Tire Festival Powered by Duro is new -although
fat tire festivals in Helen are not. New or old, it means one
thing–mountain biking fun!

The Helen Fat Tire Festival Powered by Duro is a mountain
biking event geared towards family fun. The two-day event includes group rides for all ability levels, bike games, kids’ rides,
and a 12- and 6-hour endurance cross country mountain bike
race.
The event is a fundraiser for local trail development in White
County and the Trips for Kids program.
The beautiful Unicoi State Park and Lodge is the event lodging
host and venue.
Dirty Spokes is producing the endurance race. Information

Augusta to Host 2010 IMBA World Summit
The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) has announced that Augusta,
Georgia, will host the 2010 IMBA World Summit (May 5-8). Mayor Deke Copenhaver proclaimed, “It is truly an honor to host the IMBA gathering in Augusta. Our city continues to
grow in its reputation as a bicycling destination, and this event will showcase our region
to a worldwide audience of trail enthusiasts.”
The event, expected to be the largest yet in IMBA’s history of hosting international summits, is open to the public. Topics will include destination and urban trail networks, land
conservation and sustainable trails, youth outreach and new programs designed to grow
local capacity for the 700+ clubs and patrols in IMBA’s global network. In addition to
informative seminars and networking, the gathering will feature great parties and plenty of
riding -- including a catered tour of the Forks Area Trail System (FATS), an IMBA Epic.
“The Augusta summit will serve as an essential clearinghouse to advance information on
everything to do with mountain biking and trail-based recreation,” states IMBA Executive
Director Mike Van Abel. “We will bring leaders in trail design together with land managers,
the bicycle industry and IMBA’s thriving grassroots clubs. These are the key influencers
that shape the sport, and only an IMBA summit can connect them all in the same place,
at the same time.” Attendees will receive copious educational materials, while connecting
with mountain biking enthusiasts from around the globe.

Tallahassee’s Munson Hills and Twlight Trails
to Receive Improvements

Saturday, September 12th was a day focused on the Munson Hills and Twilight trails south of Tallahassee in the Apalachicola
National Forest. The activities started at 8:30 with Valerie Naylor (Trail Dynamics), Jim Schmid (USFS), and other USFS
personnel leading a mountain bike ride of about 40 riders on the Munson Hills trail to discuss issues and opportunities for trail
improvements using American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds allocated for trail maintenance. Tom Sauret (Executive
Director of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association and Regional Director of the International Mountain Bicycling
Association) and Ken Foster (interim president of the local SORBA chapter Tallahassee Mountain Bike Association) were
also on hand. The group made numerous stops along the trail to discuss sustainable and risk-controlled mountain bike trail
construction methods related to problem areas of the Munson Hills trail.
At 11:30, a public meeting was held at the Lakes at San Marcos apartment community room adjacent to the trailhead. Refreshments were provided by Jo Haley the manager of Lakes at San Marcos. At the meeting, about 30 interested riders
listened to a presentation by Valerie on the planned enhancements for the trail. The USFS posted maps showing the problem
areas on the Munson Hills trail. Trail Dynamics will provide the USFS with specifications for the planned trail improvements,
which may include realignment, tread improvement, and armoring. The work should start early next year. The USFS has a
blog at munsontwilightmtnbiketrails.blogspot.com to keep interested riders up to date with the project.
At 6:00 a small group of local mountain bike riders met with Tom Sauret and Ken Foster to discuss energizing the local
SORBA chapter Tallahassee Mountain Bike Association. While the chapter has been effective at organizing work crews for
trail maintenance and development, the chapter has been less effective at increasing the membership and providing for longterm chapter sustainability. Tom offered a number of ideas for growing the chapter and the enthusiasm.
At 7:00, Higher Ground Bicycle Company hosted a party for the Tallahassee mountain bike community. About 50 riders
braved the rain to enjoy food, beverages, and socializing. The Higher Ground warehouse provided a dry venue for great fun
and bike-related merriment.

Changes to Dahlonega’s Turner Creek
and Bull Mountain Trails
For those of you who ride on the Bull Mtn and Turner Creek trails at the
Jake/Bull Mtn trail system outside Dahlonega, there’s been a significant
change that you need to know about. Please spread the word to your
non-CTHA friends (why aren’t they members?) and others you meet out
on the trail.
The Bull Mountain and Turner Creek trails (to the north/west of forest
service road FS28) have been in The Blue Ridge WMA for a very long
time - where hunting was only permitted on specific dates during the fall
& winter. So, from Sept through December it was safe to ride those trails
(except on those specific dates), knowing that no one was hunting in
those woods.

However, The Blue Ridge WMA has officially been dropped by Georgia
DNR (due to budget cuts), and the National Forest land that was in the
WMA will now be managed for hunting like other general forest areas,
– i.e., it will be open for the entire season for whatever species, with no
special “hunt dates”.

What this means to you as a trail user is that from mid-September
through December (and March thru May in the spring for turkey) there
will be hunting on those trails just like there has always been on the Jake
Mountain trails (south/east of FS28). As a courtesy to the other user
group (hunters) CTHA recommends that you do not begin riding on any
Jake/Bull Mountain trail during those months until 10:00 a.m. Remember,
those trails are designated multi-use – and that includes hunters too.

Another suggestion is that when you do ride during hunting season (no
matter where that is) is that you wear blaze orange - (the more, the better) and bells are good too so you are making noise.

City of Woodstock Funds Taylor Randahl Memorial
Mountain Bike Trails
Woodstock, Georgia – July 30, 2009 – The City Council of Woodstock,
Georgia voted recently to provide $150,000 of funding in their 2010
budget to build the Taylor Randahl Memorial Mountain Bike Trails in the
Olde Rope Mill Park. The trail is named in memory of Taylor Randahl, a
Cherokee County high school mountain biker who was tragically killed in
a road cycling accident on April 14, 2000.
Facilities at the Olde Rope Mill Park currently include a pavilion, picnic
areas, decks overlooking the river and access to the river for fishing
and canoeing. There is also a paved walking path along the river. The
City plans to build a bridge across the river to connect all the additional
parkland on the north side.
The trails will be built in partnership with the Woodstock Chapter of
the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA) and their parent
organization, the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA).
IMBA-SORBA is a nonprofit educational association whose mission is
to create, enhance and preserve great trail experiences for mountain
bikers worldwide. The trail will consist of approximately eight to ten miles
of contour built trail suitable for intermediate level riders and constructed
using the IMBA standards for “sustainable trails”.
The City and SORBA have executed a Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) whereby the City will provide the land, major funding and
infrastructure support. SORBA and its volunteers will provide the
organization, leadership and technical expertise for the project and will
design and layout the trail. A professional trail builder will be contracted
to provide the heavy machine cutting of the trail. As segments are cut
volunteers will follow the machine work and do the finishing hand work.
Construction is expected to take about one year. After completion,
SORBA will also provide ongoing maintenance of the trail system.
Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) also provided a $10,000 grant to
SORBA in support of this project. The REI store in Kennesaw, Georgia
has built a strong partnership with the Woodstock Chapter of SORBA
and championed this grant request. REI, the nation’s largest consumer
cooperative with more than three million active members, has been an
enthusiastic and generous supporter of mountain biking throughout the
U.S.
The Woodstock Chapter of SORBA currently maintains a similar
partnership with the Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency (CRPA) at

the Blankets Creek Mountain Bike Trails on Sixes Road in Woodstock.
That park property located along the banks of Lake Allatoona is owned
by the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers and is leased to Cherokee County.
Long term plans are to connect the fifteen miles of trails at Blankets
Creek with the new trails at Olde Rope Mill Park, creating a continuous
trail riding experience in excess of 25 miles. The City of Woodstock
has targeted a multi-use trail system which includes bicycling as an
environmentally friendly activity that can improve the quality of life
for its residents and generate tax revenues through the eco-tourism it
attracts. Assisting in the development of the system is the Greenprints
Alliance, a grassroots citizen action group formed in spring 2009 to
advance the City of Woodstock’s green infrastructure master plan known
as The Greenprints Project. When complete, the Project will add over 60
miles of trails throughout the City connecting every public place, shopping
area and neighborhood. The advancement of the Project is designed to
enhance the City’s community, natural and economic resources for all
generations.
The timeline to build this course depends on two things: The number
of volunteers and the number of skilled crew leaders to lead those
volunteers. In an effort to complete the project in a timely fashion SORBA
Woodstock hosted Trail Crew Leader Training classes Aug 22 & 23 and
18 students took the course. This brings the total number of Trail Crew
Leaders in the Chapter to 25.
The Woodstock Chapter has a full plate of trailbuilding projects in the
immediate future. Training a large group of Trail Crew Leaders was
a critically important objective for the Chapter to achieve to provide
the leadership necessary to tackle these upcoming projects. Other
trailbuilding projects include:
• Approximately two miles of connector trail between Olde Rope Mill Park
and the South Loop at Blankets Creek, including a bridge over the creek
above Toonigh Falls.
• Two miles of advanced trails across Blankets Creek from the parking lot
between the South Loop and the creek.
• A beginner downhill run on the old fire road connector for the Dwelling Loop.
The combination of the Blankets Creek Mountain Bike Trails and the new
trails at Olde Rope Mill Park will create a network of singletrack trails in
excess of 30 miles.
