NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK
The observance of Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day in Schools is designed to foster a higher level of
awareness, knowledge and pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and their
contributions to Australia as a whole. We seek to find meaningful ways to increase respect; reduce prejudice;
and strengthen relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples.
The staff and students have been involved a variety of discussions and activities to focus the students on the
importance of understanding the history of the treatment of Indigenous people throughout Australia’s history
since the arrival of Europeans. As a result there are number of wonderful displays reflecting students’
thoughts on the subject. Thank you All.
WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY

to School Day last Friday and once again thanks to Caroline and Verity for their
assistance with the promotion and organisation of stickers and fruit for
participants and to Caroline and Catherine for being there to distribute them on
Friday morning.

PARENTS AS SCIENTISTS
CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF)
The Parents as Scientists program has started with
a bang this term with some fantastic presentations
to the 5/6 students from some of NFPS¹ scientific
parents. The presenters are experts currently
working or studying in a scientific field.
Every Victorian child should have access to the world
of learning opportunities that exist beyond the
classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund
will ensure that no student will miss out on the
opportunity to join their classmates for important,
educational and fun activities.
School camps provide children with inspiring
experiences in the great outdoors, excursions
encourage a deeper understanding of how the world
works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and
leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum.
CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government
to assist eligible families to cover the costs of
school trips, camps and sporting activities.
The topics and presenters so far this term have
been:
Smelly Plants- Noel Porter
Audiology- Jason Ridgway
Bio-medical animation- Drew Berry
Human Body/Lungs- Gary Anderson
Physics/Gravity- Cameron Anderson
If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or
are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible
for CSEF. The allowance will be paid to the school to
use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions,
or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.
The annual CSEF amount per student will be:
$125 for primary school students
$225 for secondary school students.
How to Apply
I would like to congratulate and thank all the
presenters so far this term for volunteering their
time and create engaging, hands on and informative
sessions for our 5/6 students.
Next Tuesday 8am we have Mary Belfrage coming to
talk about Medicine and Health.
Contact the school office to obtain a CSEF
application form or download from

Don’t be daft about Minecraft (from Parenting Ideas Schools website)
By Jason Fox
Minecraft may be the best trend to hit boy world in years. Writer Jason Fox explains the attraction
and outlines the benefits for kids.
If you have a young child or teenager, chances are you’ve heard about Minecraft. It’s a video game
that’s kind of like digital LEGO, except that you’re in an ever-evolving world with seemingly limitless
possibilities. It’s a game that inspires deep exploration, collaboration and creativity.
But parents are worried. And rightfully so, to a degree. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.
So, let’s have a look at what makes Minecraft so engaging, why blanket bans aren’t a good idea, and
how to manage your child’s play.
Minecraft is an infinite, non-winnable game
Unlike a book, a game of chess, or a football match, a Minecraft game doesn’t end. There’s always
more that can be explored, and more that can be done. The projects you undertake in Minecraft are
self-initiated: no one is telling you what to do. And the process of making progress within Minecraft is
completely autonomous – no one is telling you how to execute your projects and achieve your goals.
It’s self-regulated learning at its finest.
But being able to ‘unplug’ and manage time and energy are essential skills your child needs to learn
too. So, here are three ways you can help them manage Minecraft in your house:
1. Show genuine interest (this should be your first step)
If your child plays Minecraft, ask them to take you on a tour. Show an interest in their passion, and
ask them questions like: what are you trying to build? What are your goals? What are the steps you
need to take? What’s the coolest thing you’ve found? Set aside at least an hour for this. It’s highly
likely they’d love the chance to share this with you, which will help you to open up a new level of
connection with them.
2. Encourage interactivity correctly
Minecraft’s multiplayer mode allows your child to play and build in the same online world as their
friends.
But remember: there are a lot of idiots on the internet, so do the following two things:
a) Create your own server or ‘whitelist’ – it’s like having an invite-only friend list.
b) Use a family-friendly server – you can Google these to find the right one to play in.
3. Don’t ban – bracket
Banning something like Minecraft should be the very last resort, as it usually only serves to enhance
the craving for it. Instead, make it part of their daily ‘free time’. Try not to have this at the end of the
day or make it contingent on homework being completed, as this may only create angst, rushed
homework and late nights. After school is best, especially if it’s bracketed by dinnertime, where all
phones and computers are turned off.
My true hope is that you give option #1 a very good go first. And if #1, #2, #3 don’t work, I’m hoping
you’ve found them an even better game to play.

LAST CHANCE TO BOOK FOR CARE FOR STUDENT FREE DAY:
Friday June 5th is a Student Free Day meaning children are not
required at school. Last week we distributed via the newsletter an
Expression of Interest form for those families who may need care on
this day. So far we only have 6 children booked in and we require at
least 25 in order for any care to be offered. Tomorrow is the last
day families can return these forms otherwise we will not be
offering any care. For those families who miss out on care, we will
be sending out a list of aftercare staff that is available for private
babysitting on this day.
DON’T FORGET TO SIGN YOUR CHILD OUT IN AFTERCARE:
We understand that parents are sometimes in a rush at the end of
the night but it is really important that you remember to sign your
child/ren out when collecting them from aftercare. Not only is this a
legal requirement, it is also vital for emergency purposes.
IF YOUR CHILD IS ABSENT PLEASE CALL:
If your child is away sick from school, PLEASE remember to cancel
their care if they are scheduled for morning or aftercare on that
day. We do receive an absence report from the main office at
3.40pm daily however we would appreciate the notification prior to
2pm on the day otherwise you will be charged an additional $2.00
late cancellation fee.
