If you have to travel by car - why not park the car a couple of blocks away and walk the remainder with the children. It’s also important to remember that until they are ten Vic Roads recommend that you still hold their hands when crossing the road as their peripheral vision is not yet fully developed. Kathy and four of our students were featured in today’s Sun to help promote tomorrow’s activity. Thanks to Caroline and Verity for their assistance with the promotion and organisation of stickers and fruit for participants on Friday morning. MORE FEEDBACK ON THE ANNUAL REPORTING MEETING It was very pleasing to receive such positive parent feedback on Chris Daicos’ presentation on Resilience at this year’s Annual Reporting Meeting. Please take a minute and read the feedback from parents on the following page. Pauline McGrath ACTING PRINCIPAL Look for your next newsletter Thursday, May 14th or on our website www.fitzroynthps.vic.edu.au May 21st, 2015 Newsletter No.15 RESILIENCE “Resiliency is the happy knack of being able to bungy jump through the pitfalls of life” (A.Fuller 1998) ANNUAL REPORTING MEETING – PARENT FEEDBACK May I commend NFPS on engaging Chris to come in and provide parents with the opportunity to part-take in such an informative, important and enjoyable presentation. Chris's presentation was delivered with great humour, passion and an amazing insight into the psyche and emotions of children and adolescents (which are, perhaps, not too far removed from our own!). Her use of role play really gave a practical understanding of scenarios where building resilience in a positive way - by giving children the skills to (1) feel socially competent; (2) be able to problem solve; (3) have a sense of autonomy; and (4) have a sense of purpose and future - can make such a difference to a child's ability to cope in difficult situations. Particularly enlightening was the "less is more" approach, where the less we physically do for our children, the more we empower them to do for themselves, thus creating more self-sufficient and self-aware individuals that do not shy away from taking responsibility for their own actions. This feeling of empowerment may also help them to feel more valued, as a member of their families and wider community. I would urge all families to take advantage of the notes that Chris has supplied to NFPS on the above presentation. Thanks again to you, Pauline and to all the others involved, in providing us with this wonderful opportunity. Kind regards, Mary Conrad As promised, I am sending a few sentences of reflection on Chris Daicos' talk at the Annual Reporting Meeting: - Let children be sad - negative emotions aren't bad. - Children need to experience anger, disappointment, loss and frustration. We can teach them the skills to overcome these emotions. - Share with your children the ways that we, as adults, relieve stress (going for walk or a run, dancing, singing, playing a game with a friend) then share how we felt better afterwards. - Teaching children to do more for themselves around the house will help make them successful and independent human beings. Regards, Jennifer Henry Chris Daicos was absolutely brilliant. Her talk on ‘Building Resilience in Children and Adolescents’ was inspiring, as was her wealth of knowledge. A very worthwhile presentation. You know how it goes. You want your son or daughter to give you some help and they don’t respond. Perhaps, you want a child to stop annoying his or her sibling. Or you simply want your kids to QUIETEN DOWN inside. When your request for cooperation is ignored. So you do what over 90% of parents do. That is, you repeat yourself. Then if that’s still ignored you RAISE the volume. ‘I’ll yell at them. That should work!’ Hmm, I’m not so sure. Usually yelling only succeeds in producing parent-deaf kids. If yelling, shouting or raising your voice is a habit you’ve developed to get cooperation then here’s a great strategy to use instead. Next time your kids ignore a reasonable request move close to them and quietly repeat your request once. No aggression, just expectation. It means you may need to stop what you are doing. So be it. Proximity is a powerful influencer. Great teachers know this. That’s why they move around in class so much: to teach and also to manage. So save your voice for conversation, encouragement and affection. Use your body effectively to manage kids. The key, of course, is to do it. My challenge for you is to bite your tongue when you want to yell. Take a deep breath (as the Mood Meter teaches you) and move into your child’s proximity. Don’t stare him down. Just be close to him or her. Keep doing it and the cooperation levels you get from your kids will increase astronomically over time. But you’ve got to do it. In future don’t yell, move closer.
