WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY – FRIDAY MAY 22 (tomorrow)
Active kids are healthy kids and we would encourage any families that can, to participate in tomorrow’s Walk
Safely to School campaign. If you have to travel by car - why not park the car a couple of blocks away and walk
the remainder with the children. It’s also important to remember that until they are ten Vic Roads recommend
that you still hold their hands when crossing the road as their peripheral vision is not yet fully developed.
Kathy and four of our students were featured in today’s Sun to help promote tomorrow’s activity.
Thanks to Caroline and Verity for their assistance with the promotion and organisation of stickers and fruit
for participants on Friday morning.
MORE FEEDBACK ON THE ANNUAL REPORTING MEETING
It was very pleasing to receive such positive parent feedback on Chris Daicos’ presentation on Resilience at
this year’s Annual Reporting Meeting. Please take a minute and read the feedback from parents on the

RESILIENCE
“Resiliency is the happy knack of being able
to bungy jump through the pitfalls of life”
(A.Fuller 1998)
ANNUAL REPORTING MEETING – PARENT FEEDBACK
May I commend NFPS on engaging Chris to come in and provide parents with the opportunity to part-take in such an
informative, important and enjoyable presentation.
Chris's presentation was delivered with great humour, passion and an amazing insight into the psyche and emotions of
children and adolescents (which are, perhaps, not too far removed from our own!).
Her use of role play really gave a practical understanding of scenarios where building resilience in a positive way - by giving
children the skills to (1) feel socially competent; (2) be able to problem solve; (3) have a sense of autonomy; and (4) have a
sense of purpose and future - can make such a difference to a child's ability to cope in difficult situations.
Particularly enlightening was the "less is more" approach, where the less we physically do for our children, the more we
empower them to do for themselves, thus creating more self-sufficient and self-aware individuals that do not shy away
from taking responsibility for their own actions. This feeling of empowerment may also help them to feel more valued, as a
member of their families and wider community.
I would urge all families to take advantage of the notes that Chris has supplied to NFPS on the above presentation.
Thanks again to you, Pauline and to all the others involved, in providing us with this wonderful opportunity.
Kind regards, Mary Conrad
As promised, I am sending a few sentences of reflection on Chris Daicos' talk at the Annual Reporting Meeting:
- Let children be sad - negative emotions aren't bad.
- Children need to experience anger, disappointment, loss and frustration. We can teach them the skills to overcome these
emotions.
- Share with your children the ways that we, as adults, relieve stress (going for walk or a run, dancing, singing, playing a
game with a friend) then share how we felt better afterwards.
- Teaching children to do more for themselves around the house will help make them successful and independent human
beings.
Regards, Jennifer Henry
Chris Daicos was absolutely brilliant. Her talk on ‘Building Resilience in Children and Adolescents’ was inspiring, as was her
wealth of knowledge. A very worthwhile presentation.

SIGNING IN PROCEDURE
Many of you will have noticed that we have a new
sign-in procedure at the front desk – no more books!
This is now done via an iPad application and can be
used for parent helpers, visitors, student late arrival
and signing out students.
LOST PROPERTY
Given the blast of winter weather lost property is
now overflowing with jumpers and jackets which get
shed as children warm up during the day. It seems
that given the sudden cold snap many families have
not had a chance to label their winter clothing.
Please either use an iron-on label or alternately a pen
or better still laundry marker to write your child's
name on the label. All labelled items are returned
through the front office to their owners.

DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH
DISABILITY
‘Collection Notice’
All schools in Australia, including Independent and
Catholic schools, will participate in the Nationally
Consistent Collection of Data on School Students
with Disability this year.
The Data Collection is an annual count of the
number of students with disability receiving
educational adjustments to support their
participation in education on the same basis as
students without disability.
All education agencies are now required under the
Australian Education Regulation 2013 to provide
information on a student’s level of education,
disability and level of adjustment to the Australian
Government Department of Education and Training.*
Data will continue to be de-identified prior to its
transfer to the Australian Government Department
of Education and Training. No student’s identity will
be provided to the Australian Government
Department of Education and Training.
The collection of this information from states and
territories will inform future policy and program
planning in relation to students with disability.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to
contact Pauline McGrath (Acting Principal) on (03)
9481 5860 or the Victorian Department of Education
and Training Data Collection Hotline on (03) 9651

Don’t yell, move closer
By Michael Grose
As a busy parent it’s easy to give your voice a work out when you don’t get the cooperation you want from
your children.
You know how it goes.
You want your son or daughter to give you some help and they don’t respond.
Perhaps, you want a child to stop annoying his or her sibling.
Or you simply want your kids to QUIETEN DOWN inside.
When your request for cooperation is ignored.
So you do what over 90% of parents do. That is, you repeat yourself. Then if that’s still ignored you RAISE
the volume.
‘I’ll yell at them. That should work!’
Hmm, I’m not so sure.
Usually yelling only succeeds in producing parent-deaf kids.
If yelling, shouting or raising your voice is a habit you’ve developed to get cooperation then here’s a great
strategy to use instead.
Next time your kids ignore a reasonable request move close to them and quietly repeat your request
once.
No aggression, just expectation.
It means you may need to stop what you are doing. So be it.
Proximity is a powerful influencer. Great teachers know this. That’s why they move around in class so
much: to teach and also to manage.
So save your voice for conversation, encouragement and affection.
Use your body effectively to manage kids.
The key, of course, is to do it.
My challenge for you is to bite your tongue when you want to yell. Take a deep breath (as the Mood Meter
teaches you) and move into your child’s proximity. Don’t stare him down. Just be close to him or her.
Keep doing it and the cooperation levels you get from your kids will increase astronomically over time.
But you’ve got to do it.
In future don’t yell, move closer.

CHILD CARE REBATE/CHILD CARE BENEFIT/ALLOWABLE ABSENCES:
Are you registered for the Child Care Rebate (CCR) or Child Care Benefit? If your child is
attending any registered child care service (kinder, OSHC, Vacation Care etc) you are eligible
to claim the 50% Child Care Rebate. This rebate is NOT means tested like the Child Care
Benefit is, therefore all families are entitled to claim this rebate either as a lump sum (you
would receive it after claiming your end of financial year tax return), you can also have it
paid directly to the service either fortnightly, monthly or quarterly, as a discount directly off
your fees. Or you may choose to have the rebate paid directly to you fortnightly, monthly or
quarterly. You MUST ensure to supply us with your Customer Reference Number (CRN) your
date of birth and the same for your child/ren. These numbers cannot be the same. If you
already have these details please ensure to check that we have them on file to ensure you
are receiving your rebate. To register or to find out more please contact the Family
Assistance Office on 13 61 50 or go to
http://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/services/centrelink/child-care-rebate
For those families who are already receiving the Child Care Benefit please note that every
time your child is absent from aftercare without the providing the minimum 48 hrs notice,
you are still being charged for this session. This also means that your child is using an
allowable absence. Each family is allowed 42 absences in a financial year, once you use all
these allowable absences you will lose your Child Care Benefit and be required to pay full
fees. At the bottom of your account you are shown how many days your child has been
absent from OSHC indicated on the last page as “YTD ABSENCE = . If your total is already at
42 you may no longer be receiving any CCB entitlements. This does not affect the CCR. You
total will reset to 0 on July 1st 2015. Further information can be obtained from the above link.
