On Mondays the workers can be seen sifting through and
separating the recyclables from the rubbish outside the Sasol
garage. The Sasol workers are unwilling to separate the plastics,
cans and card board from the rest of the refuse. If the recyclables are
pre-sorted it makes the job of collecting them much easier. It will
probably require a ruling from top management to change the
situation. They have several corporate clients including Council
which supports them fully.
The street pick-ups in Henley are still an important part of their
business and they encourage ALL households to participate. White
bags for paper and cardboard and transparent bags for plastic can be
placed on the pavement next to the black bags of refuse on Thursday
mornings in Henley. A rolled up white bag will be returned to you
but please supply your own
transparent bag for plastic

The workers all sport smart
uniforms with the PETCO
logo and slogan “Plastic
bottles are not trash.”
PETCO is an industry
regulatory body responsible
for increasing the recycling
of PET bottles in South
Africa. PETCO will also sponsor a platform scale to the project.
Pinky is still grateful to Joy Kirsten, who, although no longer
active in the organisation was the initial mover who got the business
going.
Pinky is on the lookout for a fork lift which will make transferring
the 200kg packs of cardboard to the trucks much easier.
We were pleasantly surprised and pleased at how many people
came to an Henley Residents' and Ratepayers' Association AGM
meeting which was held on 26 February. On 5 March a meeting
was called to vote a new committee in and elect a chairman, vice
chairman, treasurer and secretary and ordinary committee
members, which we duly did. (See picture on Page 3)
The HRRA was initially known as the Vigilance Association but
later became the Henley Residents' and Ratepayers' Association.
Over the years it has sometimes been very effective such as when
people like Bill Barnes took over, and then sometimes not been
very effective.
An HRRA committee is supposed to be in office for a two year
term but the 2012/13 committee found itself going on during 2014.
During this time we lost good committee members such as Franci
Hossack who went to live in America, Ahmed Patel, who is now
living in the Cape and Dominic Maimela whose company was
sending him away on business during the week. It is very pleasing
that the committee is complete again.
Over the years, meetings started going on for too long, putting
people off attending. We decided to keep about 16 items on the
agenda and to close the meetings by 9.30. I think Rob Hewer will
remember those meetings where we were nodding off at 11.00, and
the chairs had become extremely hard!
We would recommend that every effort be made to have a good
relationship with Council. Members of our committee have met
with former Mayor Timothy Nast on several occasions. We have
chatted to Patricia Hutcheson and Annette van Schalkwyk, about
rates. The resultant article titled “Do You Know How Much Your
Rates Have Actually Gone Up?” by Ahmed Patel, will be posted to
the notice board at the post office. We have also had a meeting with

Demarcation challenges for Henley
The public meeting arranged by Lynda Parsonson and Freddie
Peters on 2 March, was as important for local residents, as it was
disturbing. It is clearly not a matter of geography or improved
service delivery, but purely politics and unashamed strategy to
attempt to remove the efficiently run DA Midvaal local authority.
Henley at Heart has taken cognisance of the fact that service
delivery will deteriorate, regardless of demarcation, as we were
advised and informed by our previous executive mayor, and as
witnessed and experienced over the past months. The important
issue here is that we have to continue to take initiatives and remain
proactive within our own community, so as to endeavour to sustain
our quality of life, and in particular the neatness, cleanliness and
general appeal of our special Village.
As much as there is a collective commitment to opposing this unilateral and aggressive attempt by the government to incorporate
Henley on Klip into the Emfuleni Metro, we can also accept that the
government will remain relentless in these attempts, particularly in
anticipation of the national municipal elections of 2016.
Therefore, another special call to all Henley residents not only to
unite in their resistance, but also to cooperate with their energy to
maintain our quality of life through our own resources, endeavours
and in particular commitment, when we periodically meet and
attend to the Village and its upkeep.
Henley at Heart is not an organisation for special or invited
people, but for everybody. With this note we wish to again alert
everybody to the inevitable deterioration of service delivery, but at
the same time invite everyone to engage in this proud and exciting
project of starting to look after ourselves. Very importantly, this is
not a supplementary service to the services a local authority is
supposed to perform, as financed by our rates and taxes but, given
the issues of inevitability and a realistic perspective on the future, it
is both timeous but also pleasing and rewarding to commence this

the present Mayor, Bongani Baloyi. Obviously we have not gone to
see these people for a pleasant chat but to discuss matters that are
important to us and put forward queries. These discussions have
always been very helpful.
Matters that have been discussed during the past three years or
so: River flooding, river clean ups, sewage spills, half built houses,
increases in rates, street lighting, the metro, Afrimat and the
proposed dolomite burning plant, park benches, the rubbish dump,
the Rebstein Bridge, noise from night clubs, speed bumps on
Ewelme Road, retaining tanks, soccer for the children, recycling,
tyre pyrolysis, the scout hall and maladministration in Midvaal
municipality.
We wish all the very best to the incoming committee.

Henley Volunteers at work
The Henley Volunteers kicked off 2015 with a bang, by getting the
gorgeous dogs in Kruisgras Street unchained. The owner of the
dogs had to chain up these dogs for their own safety as they were
able to jump his wall and ended up in the road all the time. We
decided to help out and build a huge enclosure so that they can
spend their days doing what dogs do and not be dragged down by a
very heavy chain. After a quick appeal via Facebook and some
emails sent through the community, we had an incredible response!
Donations for absolutely everything we could think of - enough to
erect a 50m x 30m enclosure! Guy Brokensha and Sharron and
Mike Stone gave us poles. Ilse Rieder gave fencing and so did
Irwin's Animal Rescue as well as a gate. Rob Macfarlane sponsored
us for wire. Yvette Gory and Irma Coetzee sponsored us with
finances to get the sand, cement and stone that were needed, as well
as new collars and leads. Heather gave moral support. A huge thank
you to all the guys who gave the muscles to get the job done, Ronnie
van As and his son Marius, Esra and Ronald, Rob Lombard, Peter
Commons, Nardus van der Watt, Robert MacFarlane, Dries and
Henk Breytenbach and Kopano and his wife Grace and their kids.
Thanks to Cornelia and her daughters for refreshments which were
desperately needed! The dogs were taken away for the day and were
spoiled by Spotless Pets in Henley. They did such a fantastic job and
the dogs came back looking like a million dollars! Thank you so
much to everybody for their input! Viva Freedom to Dogs!
This project takes a little bit of the burden away from the SPCA
and gives the community a chance to take ownership over the
animals that are struggling around us. We would like to keep up the
momentum and get more dogs in our community off heavy short
chains. If anybody would like to donate either poles, fencing or sand
and cement please call me on 083 555 5925.

Johan Le Roux arbor ceremony
The Daleside Volunteers and Henley friends have decided to host a
special ceremony on Thursday, 26 March, in honour of Johan Le
Roux, youth hero of the 1970 school bus disaster. They will be
planting a tree dedicated to Johan at 18h00 on that date.
The tree will be planted on the site where the Volunteers unveiled
the memorial for the twenty-three children who died in the accident
on that fateful day, the lane adjacent to Highbury House on
Bokmakierie Road.
An invitation is extended to all to attend the ceremony. The
proceedings will start at 18.00. Attendees are requested to arrive
from 17.30 as parking may be at a premium.
As it is during the school holidays, students are requested to
remind their parents so that the whole family can attend.

Letters
Don't close the Weir crossing
Since my letter to the Herald in December, a number of people have
approached me to voice their support for the retention of a river
crossing at the weir.
The existing culvert bridge fails on so many levels: It has the
aesthetics of a precast concrete bus shelter. It jams logs and floods
properties. As a bridge, it literally falls short of the old low level
crossing, in that the water level only needs to rise a few centimetres
for the east end to become impassable without stepping stones.
However, as anyone who watched the river in full spate flowing
over the top during the 2010 floods will attest to, it is incredibly
strong.
Options for Council to consider.
1 Give us the Timothy Nast bridge we were all expecting.
2 Build a pole and cable suspension bridge like the Storms River
National Park Bridge.
3 Repair the old low level walkway built in 1952 which was satisfactory for over 50 years.
4 Truncate the existing structure to half a meter above water level
and put a new platform on it.
5 Demolish the lot, roll out some concrete pipe and throw a slab
over it as done in most national parks.
The Marie Antoinette of Pedestrians
Cllr Parsonson's dismissive comments about alternative routes
appal me, in their thoughtlessness. The south route across Gauteng
provincial government controlled bridge on the Heidelberg road at
Saloojees has not been pedestrian friendly since transport contractors stopped using oxen. Seriously Lynda, we've talked about
this before: Thrill seekers and adrenalin junkies, forget base jumping and freestyle motocross, and go stand on the 40 centimetre
footpath as two 26 wheelers come thundering past at 120km in
Page 5
opposite directions. Now imagine a mother crossing with two
small children.
That leaves us with the longer route over the Rebstein Bridge.
This adds considerably to the journey. As an act of solidarity Cllr
Parsonson are you prepared to walk to and from your house to the
council offices in Meyerton? According to Google maps this is
200m shorter than the only safe alternative to the Kidson Weir
Bridge.
It is not my intention to head some crusade but to send a wake-up
call to the excellent civic organisations that have protected
Henleyites from heavy handed local government since the bad old
days of the Peri-urban Board.

Do business people realise what value word of mouth carries,
positive or negative?
I had an upgrade from my old Vodacom phone to one of the smart
phone series. Experiencing difficulty in transferring the existing
contact details to the new phone, I mentioned to a friend that I
wanted to pop-in at our local Vodacom Store in Meyerton. “Don't
bother. It will be an absolute waste of time”, my friend said. None
the less, I did pop in and this is what transpired: The assistant
informed me that their branch does not have the device to transfer
data from the old phone to the new phone but it is on order! On
enquiring whether I could then just ask a few questions regarding
the new phone the reply was that it would be no problem but the
charge for that will be R350.00. Eish. Eina!
Needless to say I left in quite a huff and had to drive to Alberton to
get the problem solved.
At the Vodacom Store Alberton City I was assisted by a very
lovely young lady, the device being only a willing assistant with
willing fingers to transfer all the existing data from the old phone to
the new and who answered the R350.00 worth of questions within
less than 5minutes, free!
Anyone want to guess what my reply would be, should a friend or
stranger ask me about Vodacom Meyerton?
Eloise Scheepers
We had overseas visitors for lunch a few weeks ago and they
remarked on how clean our little village is compared to everywhere
else. They said it is a pleasure to drive in here where it all looks so
clean! So, well done Henley at Heart! Thought you would like to
know this because we sometimes take our pretty village for granted.

Pleased as I am that Arthur and Sue McDonald's Rocky is safely
We r e y o u t h e r e ?
back home, I find it unbelievable that a G.S.P. is afraid of
fireworks. Did you see anything?
Pointers and retrievers, with a little training, have no fear of
thunder or gunshots. More often than not, no training is necessary
as it is in the nature of gundogs to be unconcerned by loud noises,
even as puppies.
If Rocky is a thoroughbred pointer and is mentally stable, the
blame is on you. If he is still young please send him for training and
future heartache will be avoided.
Tony West
Response
We appreciate the concern shown by Tony West. In normal circumstances Rocky is not scared of gun shots or thunder. Obviously
the fireworks that night were just too loud and too bright (as shown
on our CCTV.) Many other people in Henley on Klip have agreed
that the fireworks upset them and their pets at New Year's and
continued for a few days afterwards.
Rocky is now five years old. He was rescued at four months old
from a very abusive environment, where he was beaten, starved
and locked in a small room. It has taken us years of love, patience,
and heartache to train and reassure him, but he still suffers from
separation anxiety when I am not with him. He cannot be enclosed
in a room or kennel. However he is a big strong dog and loves to
run, and could jump over 6 foot walls. Sadly that night, although he
was not alone, he must have been upset or frightened enough to get
out and got lost. However we do not feel it happened because of
any neglect on our part.
Once again we thank everybody who was concerned and involved in his rescue, and we are delighted to have him back home.

From The Editors
By the time you read this the
ward demarcation meeting at
the Meyerton Town Hall will
have taken place. At stake was
the survival of Midvaal as a
separated local municipality.
Although the dispute is before
the court and therefore subjudice, the demarcation board
has gone ahead as if they had
won the case and the metro was
a fait accompli and decided to
hold the public participation
meetings required to discuss the
demarcation of wards in the
new, not approved, Metro. The
case that PAM and the DA are
presenting is solid and the two
bodies believe that MDB went
ahead with this meeting to try to
fool people into believing the
Metro was a done deal so that,
when they lose the case in court,
they can argue that the court's
decision should be overruled as
the matter had progressed too
far to be stopped. Politics at its
worst being played by a body
that is supposed to be neutral to
party politics.

Henley @Heart Clean-up
Saturday 21 February
By Wednesday before the clean
up we had four ladies and two
guys (both over 67!), willing to
help on the day. We were starting to wonder whether to
cancel. On Thursday Michelle
Henderson at Henley High
changed it all. She arranged for
the learners at the school to
participate.
At 8.30am on Saturday as we
gathered at Henley High (Wow,
it was fantastic to be welcomed
by them in such a special way)

trustworthy oldies. In the rain (a
blessing) we went out on Henley
Drive, some to clean up, others
to get the holes ready and the
main manne (Dick, Trevor,
D i e t m a r, H e n r y, D e r i c k ,
Hamish, John P, Timothy,
Bjorn, Johann and the Grade 11
guys) to plant the 30 Liquid
Ambers, whilst the girls (Jess,
Kerry, Ingeborg, Kathy, Ester,
Lucy and Irene) trimmed
Memory Lane trees, the roses,
and Henley Drive trees. Joy and
Pat kept a very close eye on the
planting of the trees!
Afterwards we were treated
like royalty at the school to the
most delicious hamburgers
made by Cornia, Brigid, Sean
and Abby, true Henleyites!
Once again, a BIG THANK
YOU to ever one, for working
in the rain for two hours. It was
so special. May the 30 trees
flourish because of the love
with which they were planted.
Hopefully we will have the
privilege of enjoying the
beautiful autumn colours as we
come down Henley Drive.

Midvaal's IDP Representative Forum
fosters healthy debate
On Saturday, 21 February 2015, Midvaal Local Municipality
hosted the first Integrated Development Planning (IDP)
Representative Forum for the year. These meetings are held to
gather public input to assist with the municipality's planning
process for the upcoming financial year. The Forum was attended
by ward councillors, ward committee members, members of ratepayers associations, volunteer groups and other stakeholders in
close contact with Midvaal communities. The aims of the meeting,
as presented by Executive Mayor Bongani Baloyi, were to build a
better working relationship between the municipality, ward
councillors and communities, to provide an understanding of the
developmental challenges Midvaal faces, as well as how they respond to development opportunities, and to explain issues around
infrastructure in Midvaal.
Each Mayoral Committee Member (MMC) presented on key
topics from their respective departments, such as the growth in
Midvaal's population and the resulting impact on infrastructure, the
link between paying rates and receiving service delivery, the budget
split and prioritisation process, investment strategies, the indigent
policy, and key social services projects including libraries and
cemeteries. The floor was then opened for discussion. Questions
were raised with regard to integrating outlying communities, challenges faced in the education sector, skills training for unemployed
communities, the role of churches in the expanding population, and
the role of agriculture amongst poorer communities. The Mayor's
main message for the day was that wards should put aside their
differences and work together with local government to achieve
whatever is best for the community. He stressed the importance of
stakeholders understanding the Municipality's strategy, constraints,
and long-term goals, so that communities can be fully integrated

into the process of building a better Midvaal for all, instead of just
fighting for quick wins within individual wards.
