TORONTO – Canada added one additional medal Saturday, as the 29th Pan American Karate Championships officially concluded with four remaining events. Daniel Gaysinsky won bronze over American Brian Irr in the male Open kumite division, where athletes can compete against other weight classes. “I’m at a loss for words right now,” an emotional Gaysinsky, who competes in the -75 Kg division, said following the victory over Irr, a +84 Kg athlete. “This is what we live for – representing our sport and our nation…There are no fears. I take this event just as seriously as my own weight division, if not more.” Gaysinsky’s medal was Canada’s fifth of the competition – three silver and two bronze – to finish in 10th place. Venezuela continued its two-day surge up the standings after failing to reach the podium Thursday, capturing gold in both the male team kumite and female open kumite events. The female open final featured two Venezuelans, with Omaira Molina (-68 Kg) defeating teammate Franyerlin Brito (-61 Kg) for their country’s fourth gold of the competition. Brazil, which won the female team kumite over Ecuador, earned three medals in the day’s four events, finishing with a total of 15. Colombia, the Dominican Republic, the United States, Peru, Mexico, Chile, Cuba and Argentina also won medals during the three-day championship. The athletes will return to the Greater Toronto Area for the 2015 Pan American Games, with the karate event slated for July 23-25 at the Mississauga Sports Centre.
