As a social epidemiologist she has been conducting research on the social determinants of health and well-being among women and children for over 20 years. Throughout her career she has made several innovative methodological contributions to her field and has recently coedited the book, Rethinking Social Epidemiology: Toward a Science of Change (2011, Springer). She has conducted a number of survey-based and longitudinal studies in the areas of the social determinants of adult mental health, intimate partner violence and children’s well-being as well as clinic and community based evaluations of programs concerning smoking cessation, HIV prevention, infant mortality prevention and addressing homelessness. She has been widely recognized for her contributions to the well-being of women and children through the receipt of early and mid-career awards given by national organizations in the United States and serves on several local, federal and international committees and boards such as the Canadian Perinatal Surveillance System committee, and US Federal Advisory Committee for the National Children’s Study. Carles Muntaner MD PhD Since 2007, as part of his work for the WHO Health Equity Branch in Switzerland and the Kobe Center for Urban Health in Japan, Dr Muntaner has been involved in two WHO reports on the Political Economy of Intersectoral Action for health (Closing the Gap in a Generation, 2008; Hidden Cities, 2010). Previously he participated in the PAHO led effort to evaluate the intersectoral program “Barrio Adentro” in Venezuela (PAHO, 2006). Since the mid 1990s, Dr. Muntaner has been focusing his research on the health effects of work organization and labor markets. He has been funded by NIH, CDC,AHRQ and NIOSH (US), the European Commission, the Swedish Work Environment Fund, WHO, PAHO, The Spanish FIS, and CPHA and CIHR (Canada). Most of Dr. Muntaner’s career has been devoted to collaborative research projects. He has conducted public health research and practice in the U.S., the European Union, Latin America, Asia and Western Africa. Dr. Muntaner has provided leadership in public health with his pioneering work in the area of social inequalities in health including effects of work organization, employment relations and contextual effects. This research was used to increase wages and benefits to low wage health care workers in the US. Dr Muntaner was co- Chair of the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health Employment Conditions Network and co author of the employment chapter of the “Marmot Review”. In 2004 he received the Wade Hampton Frost Award from the American Public Health Association.
