The term Nostalgia is often associated with sentimentality, passivity, conformity, conservatism,
and bourgeois satiation. Yet in recent years nostalgia of a different kind emerged – self-aware,
militant, political and radical – that fixes its sights on the past for the redemption of the future.
This new kind of nostalgia arises from the growing sensation of disillusionment with the “End
of History” era, or the expanding rupture that characterizes Israeli society since the YumKippur War and the collapse of “naïve” nationalism.
This ‘Nostalgia’, which manifests throughout the Israeli socio-political spectrum (albeit in
often contradictory ways), is increasingly evident in art and creative works: in attempts to
restore and/or formulate a ‘new’ modernism, and in the struggle within art schools, museums
and the media that is centered on a return to the ‘old’ order in which art, design and
architecture possessed a clearer and perhaps more tangible position.
In the intellectual discourses of the humanities and social sciences, and especially within
Critical Theory, this phenomenon manifested with the emergence of new intellectual
movements, which, in reaction to the deep crisis of the ‘post-‘ era, seek historical continuity in
reestablishing the destabilized disciplinary fields. In these instances modernism and its
achievements is sought after as a source for regeneration, a destination for a ‘return’, or as the
symbol of a ‘lost’ world that calls for restoration.
Researchers, thinkers, authors and artists are invited to propose research papers,
essays, reviews, portfolios and virtual exhibitions, for publication in this issue. The materials
should relate to the concept of Nostalgia, its sources, transformations and manifestations in
the contemporary world, and especially in Israel of the last decade.
