Happy because I am part of the body of Christ and I know the body of Christ can help. Sad because a local homeless man (a.k.a. Scott) was recently traveling barefoot. He had no shoes. Often times we get guys who either have no shoes or whose shoes are ragged. Scott walked to the mission with his callused bare feet. Once checked in, he was able to get some food, a shower, and a good night’s sleep. Scott has not asked for anything more than for a pair of shoes. He has completed the necessary work to get a job. He starts work soon. Homeless men usually have basic needs. Typically they will not take more than they need...they want others in need to also get blessed. It is a blessing for me to get to serve others. I am often humbled by their humility. Our current needs are for good tennis shoes (sizes 10, 11, 12) and bicycles. The guys also need a new, heavy duty, electric range. Thank you, Lee Alderman, Exec. Director 11 WAYS YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THE 2014 HARVEST HOME FESTIVAL The Harvest Home Festival Committee is looking at ideas and ways to invigorate and provide opportunities for more people to be involved in and contribute to the festival. We would like your ideas and suggestions. One idea is a silent auction table. We would also like to increase our baked goods. Silent Auction Table Special items that people could bid on during the festival. Items could include: 1. Golf package. 2. Fishing trip 3. Weekend get-away package at KC, Branson or even at a local Bed and Breakfast 4. Specialty Baskets 5. Tickets to KU, K-State, Wichita State, Chiefs, Royals ball games, concerts, dinner theatre 6. Quilt or wall hanging 7. Unique Antique 8. Special homemade food items 9. A monthly or seasonal service (such as x hours of leaf raking, window washing, lawn mowing, babysitting, car detailing) 10. Gift certificates (such as message, pedicure, candy store, coffee shop, restaurant, etc.) Baked Goods always sell quickly. Popular items include noodles, candy and yeast breads. We know there are many talented people who make these tasty foods. If you would like to help coordinate or participate in baked goods kitchen event or provide items, please fill out the following form, call the church office at 342-8181 or send an email to [email protected]. 12 HELP WANTED FOR HARVEST HOME FESTIVAL AUCTION ITEMS: * Someone to make an oak wood top replacement for a small Victorian parlor table. Please give me more details. Name and Contact Information ____________________________________________________________________ Noah - The Man, The Ark, The Flood Saturday Night at 6:00 p.m. in the Wing - Starts later this month The Bible’s account of Noah, the ark, and the flood is legendary: A man in his 500's with no power tools and only ancient technology builds a huge ocean - going ship able to hold two of every land aninmal. The flood covers the entire planet, topping the highest mountain by 20 feet, yet somhow this extra water all disappears. To many people the Bible’s account of Noah’s flood sounds over the top - almost mythical. In this study we go to the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky, to interview scientists and theologians who discuss the Bible’s account of Noah, the ark, and the flood. We also search for evidence of the biblical deluge in the records of ancient civilizations, on the earth’s surface, and in the fossil record. Crossways - The Pre-Exilic and Exilic Prophets Sunday at 9:45 a.m. - Meets in the Fellowship Hall Greg Rahe, Facilitator This in-depth study covers the fiery Old Testament prophets (Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, Micah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, etc.) who warned God's people about the consequences of ignoring the Sinai Covenant--and then offered hope after those consequences came to pass. Still today, God is merciful in the wake of our transgressions. True Spirituality - Becoming a Romans 12 Christian ____________________________________________________________________ Sunday at 9:45 a.m. - Meets in Basement Fellowship Hall Keith Shaver, Facilitator Christians today live in a world that is activity heavy and relationship light. The result is spiritual emptiness. We struggle to know what God wants from us and for us . . . and we’re unsure what a real relationship with God really looks like. But that was never God’s idea. HIS idea of faith is not about rules or religion— it’s about relationship. That’s where God tells us to start in Romans 12. ____________________________________________________________________ Name and Contact Information The Book of Revelation ____________________________________________________________________ I would like to participate in a festival baked good making event. Please give me more details. ____________________________________________________________________ 13 Sunday at 9:45 a.m. College Bible Study, Church Basement, bottom of the North stairs Cory Olson & Daphne Evans Join us this fall semester as the college Bible study explores God’s final plan for us in his last “Revelation” to the Apostle John! Each week we will study a chapter in the book of Revelation through discussions, videos and readings! 14 Faith Begins @ Home Mom Sunday at 9:45 a.m. - Meets in the basement, Room 6 & 7 Gena Jones & Britney Hinrichs, Facilitators There is a special bond between mothers and their children. In Christian families, this bond can grow beyond biology to the life of faith, but many moms don’t know how to begin nurturing their children’s relationship with God. Faith Begins @ Home resources is designed to help bring faith home. Moms will find step-by-step tips and age-appropriate guides for instilling a vibrant and growing faith in their children’s lives, as well as true-life stories from other moms experiencing the power and blessing of God in their homes as they develop their “spiritual skills” with their children. Faith Begins @ Home Dad Sunday at 9:45 a.m. - Meets at the Youth House, 2nd Floor - Tom Menke, Facilitates Most Christian dads want to be the kind of father who guides his children in their walk with God—but many don’t have the first clue where to start. Faith Begins @ Home resources is designed to help bring faith home. Dads will find step-by-step tips and age-appropriate guides for leading their family’s spiritual development, as well as true-life stories from other dads experiencing the power and blessing of God in their homes as they develop their “spiritual skills” with their children. Adult LOGOS Study Wednesday Nights Dustin Lantow is putting together an Adult Bible Study to study the Bible lessons that the students study on Wednesday nights so the parents can review and continue the lesson at home. Also, we will look at how each lesson ties into some portion of Luther's Small Catechism. We will meet during Bible Time, 6:55 to 7:40 in the Wing. If anyone has any questions, they can contact me at [email protected] or call me at 340-7475. Thursday Morning Breakfast Study Meets at 7:00 a.m. at Braum’s on 6th Street Led by Pastor T This group is studying the book of Leviticus TIED IN FAITH, SENT IN HOPE AND WRAPPED IN LOVE Lutheran World Relief Quilts Lutheran World Relief started after WWII left 1/5 of the world’s Lutherans homeless. Through offerings and prayers Lutherans have supported LWR ever since. With local partners; LWR works to improve harvests, health and education to over 7 million people in 35 countries each year. We also make baby, health, and school kits for LWR but mission quilts are the most requested. LWR strives to provide as many quilts as possible but the supply is limited. Quilts go to families who have lost everything due to a natural disaster or violence. When you make and send a quilt you are not only comforting someone you have never met. It can be: a cozy clean new bed cover a baby carrier tied around a mother’s back a market display, spread on the ground and piled with vegetables. a sack for transporting those goods to market a sunshade a room divider and even a home and most importantly - a constant reminder that someone, far away, cares a lot. Our church ladies have made 200 quilts so far this year. Church members and friends donate fabric for quilt pieces, good used mattress pads and blankets for the middle of the quilt and nice used sheets can be used for the quilt back. Church members cut quilt squares. One dedicated lady sews the quilt tops. Three to five ladies meet one morning per week to tie quilts and package them for delivery to a Lutheran church in Topeka every October. A truck picks them up for delivery to one of the 2 warehouses in Minnesota and Maryland. Warehouse staff prepares them for shipment overseas. A quilt tracker can follow where our quilts actually go. Men are not left out. Men help with the tying in some churches! There is something special about a quilter: DEDICATION AND LOVE FOR OTHERS. Quilts are made as a gift of hope by caring people, a way to express our Christian love for neighbors. They are tied in faith, sent in hope and wrapped in love. We have displayed some of our quilts in the Fellowship Hall. We hope you will take a couple of minutes and look at the quilts. Our THANKS to everyone who makes this mission work possible. 15 16
