GLORIA (Sunday Evening - No. 341 in Worship hymnal)
Glory be to God in heaven,
Songs of joy and peace we bring;
Thankful hearts and voices raising,
To creation’s Lord we sing:
Lord, we thank you, Lord, we bless you,
Glory be to God our king.
LAUDA ANIMA
Lamb of God who on your shoulders
Bore the load of this world’s sin;
Only Son of God the Father,
You have brought us peace within:
Lord, have mercy, Christ, have mercy,
Now your glorious reign begin.
You, O Son of God, are holy,
You we praise with one accord;
None in heav’n or earth is like you,
Only you are Christ the Lord,
With the Father, and the Spirit,
Ever worshiped and adored.

Litany of Saints
CREED
I believe in one God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
All BOW
and by the Holy Spirit
was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
All STAND UPRIGHT
For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic
and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism
for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection
of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

KITCHEN
GARDEN
Our Cathedral Kitchen Garden had an incredible first summer! The garden has produced an amazing bounty of fresh
healthy vegetables for the Cathedral Kitchen meal program,
more than anyone expected for our first year. It’s now time
to prepare the garden for winter, and we need your help!
Join us for our fall work parties:

Saturday, October 18, 8:30am-1:00pm

Saturday, October 25, 8:30am-1:00pm
We’ll be pulling plants, raking, moving compost and top-dressing all the garden beds.
Expect to have a great time in fellowship
with your friends, have a good workout,
and perhaps get a little bit dirty.
You
don’t need any specific gardening skills!
Bring work gloves and a sack lunch – and a
wheelbarrow, if you have one!

Immortal Love
Poets of the Spiritual Life
Wednesdays, October 8, October 22, November 5, and November 19
7:00pm-8:30pm | St. James Cathedral, Rectory Parlors
This series will explore the spirituality of four Christian poets from the Victorian
period: CHRISTINA ROSSETTI, FRANCIS THOMPSON, ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON, and
GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS. Corinna Laughlin (Cathedral liturgy director and PhD
in English Literature) will offer an overview of the poet and a close look at a few
key poems, read by Cathedral reader Scott Webster. All are welcome!
October 8 | Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)
Christina Rossetti is perhaps best known today for her Christmas lyric “In the bleak
midwinter.” She was one of the finest poets of the Victorian period, and among her most
compelling works are those exploring Christian themes.
October 22 (NOTE DATE CHANGE!)| Francis Thompson (1859-1907)
Francis Thompson was born into a prominent Catholic family, but spent his youth on the
streets. We will explore Thompson’s greatest poem, The Hound of Heaven, one of the classics of
Catholic poetry in English.
November 5 | Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892)
The defining event of Tennyson’s life was the death of his best friend Arthur Hallam in 1833.
During this time when we remember our dead, we will read selections from Tennyson’s In
Memoriam.
November 19 | Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889)
One of the greatest poets in the English language, Gerard Manley Hopkins was also a
Catholic convert and Jesuit priest. We will explore some of his shorter poems which touch on
the dark and light of his life and relationship with God.
A booklet with the poems to be read and discussed is free in the Cathedral Bookstore if you would like to
prepare in advance. Copies will be available at each session as well.

that engage with faith. Poetry from the pages of Image by
writers such as Denise Levertov, Kathleen Norris, and
