The Immigrant Assistance program helps to immigrants
and refugees to learn English, apply for citizenship and
prepare for their US Citizenship exam, apply for

PARISH REMEMBRANCE Throughout the year, because we
are the Cathedral Church, we remember in prayer at Mass
and Vespers each of the parishes and missions of the

have a family in the parish who has recently relocated
to Seattle for critical medical care and they are in need
of housing. There are two adults (mom and dad) and
three elementary aged children. They need to be close
to the city for medical care and they have limited

Keynote speaker, Immaculee Ilibagiza, a Rwandan
genocide survivor, will present her story on “hope,
forgiveness, and the value of life.” Come be inspired

A COMPASSIONATE CHURCH FOR THE POOR On
Monday, November 7, 2014, at 6:00pm in Pigott
Auditorium, Cardinal Peter Turkson, President of the
Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, will explore
how the vocation of business can contribute to a
renewed Church sent by Christ on a mission to serve
those at the margins of society. “Business leaders are
called to engage the contemporary economic and
financial world in light of the principles of human
dignity and the common good” (Cardinal Turkson).

Immortal Love
Poets of the Spiritual Life

This series will explore the spirituality of four Christian poets from the Victorian
period: CHRISTINA ROSSETTI, FRANCIS THOMPSON, ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON, and
GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS. Corinna Laughlin (Cathedral liturgy director and PhD
in English Literature) will offer an overview of the poet and a close look at a few
key poems, read by Cathedral reader Scott Webster. All are welcome!
October 8 | Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)
Christina Rossetti is perhaps best known today for her Christmas lyric “In the bleak
midwinter.” She was one of the finest poets of the Victorian period, and among her most
compelling works are those exploring Christian themes.
October 22 (NOTE DATE CHANGE!)| Francis Thompson (1859-1907)
Francis Thompson was born into a prominent Catholic family, but spent his youth on the
streets. We will explore Thompson’s greatest poem, The Hound of Heaven, one of the classics of
Catholic poetry in English.
November 5 | Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892)
The defining event of Tennyson’s life was the death of his best friend Arthur Hallam in 1833.
During this time when we remember our dead, we will read selections from Tennyson’s In
Memoriam.
November 19 | Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889)
One of the greatest poets in the English language, Gerard Manley Hopkins was also a
Catholic convert and Jesuit priest. We will explore some of his shorter poems which touch on
the dark and light of his life and relationship with God.
A booklet with the poems to be read and discussed is free in the Cathedral Bookstore if you would like to
prepare in advance. Copies will be available at each session as well.

that celebrates the best contemporary writing and art
that engage with faith. Poetry from the pages of Image by
writers such as Denise Levertov, Kathleen Norris, and
Franz Wright will be interspersed with performances
by Seattle’s leading choral ensembles. This event will
demonstrate one of Image’s founding tenets: that beauty’s
power to draw us closer to the divine—through music,
poetry, and all the arts—is not a thing of the past, but is
continually being renewed in our own time.

MEET IMMACULEE ILIBAGIZA
Immaculee was born and raised in a small village in Rwanda, Africa. Her life
was turned upside down in 1994 when the country erupted in tribal warfare.
While in hiding, anger and resentment were destroying Immaculée’s mind,
body and spirit. It was then that Immaculée turned to prayer. Hear her story of
hope, forgiveness, and the value of life. Friday night, October 24.
