A Warm Welcome Awaits You
at St Albans Cathedral
St Albans Cathedral stands over the place where Alban,
Britain’s first saint, was buried after giving his life for his faith
over 1700 years ago. The building you visit today however
was completed and dedicated in 1115, making 2015 a very
special anniversary year for the Cathedral which will be
marked by a series of ‘Dedication 900’ events. See page 17
for full details.
The Cathedral has an amazing mixture of architectural styles
which bear witness to the many centuries of its life, first as a
monastic Abbey and now as a Cathedral. There are many
unique sights to take in when you visit, plus an exciting
programme of events, tours and concerts which you can find
out about in this guide.
We look forward to seeing you soon.

Dedication 900
St Albans Cathedral stands over the place where Alban, Britain’s
first saint, was buried over 1700 years ago, but the building you
visit today was completed and dedicated in 1115.
2015 is therefore a very special anniversary year for the
Cathedral which will be marked by a series of ‘Dedication 900’
events.
New Statues on the Nave Screen
2015 will see the installation, dedication and blessing of
new statues of Christian martyrs on the nave screen. This is
believed to be the first time since the Reformation that statues
in a variety of colours have been restored to a medieval
cathedral screen.
The Alban Pilgrimage
On Saturday 20th June we welcome two significant church
leaders: the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend
Justin Welby will attend and preach at the Eucharist, and the
Archbishop of Rouen, Mgr Jean-Charles Descubes, will preach
at Evensong.
Special Lectures
In the spring the Cathedral Study Centre is running a lecture
series reflecting on martyrs in our own time. These will focus
on martyrs featured in the new statues on the nave screen.

Monday 20th April: Saint Elisabeth of Russia
