29th Sunday Ordinary 19th October 2014 Year A St Ignatius Church Kensington Terrace, Toowong They Belong to God and to No One Else This incident is charged with tension. The Pharisees have retreated to plan a decisive attack on Jesus. To do so they do not come themselves, but send a ‘few disciples’ and thus avoid a direct confrontation with Jesus. Holy Spirit Church They are the guardians of the existing order, Harriett Street, Auchenflower and they do not want to lose their privileged position in the society that Jesus is challenging radically. The praise the disciples of the Pharisees shower on Jesus is not usually found on their lips. “Teacher”, they said, “we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth”. It’s all a trap, but they’ve spoken with more truth than they intended: Jesus is entirely committed to prepare the way for God, to bring about a more just society. He is not at the service of the Emperor of Rome; he is involved in the process of the coming of God’s kingdom. He is not there to spread the Roman Empire, but to make the righteousness of God possible among his children. When they ask him whether it is right to pay taxes to Caesar or not, his answer is emphatic: “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s”. Very few words have been quoted as often as these: “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s”, and none have been so distorted by vested interests far removed from the Prophet who was totally dedicated to the cause, not of the Emperor but of those forgotten, impoverished, and excluded by Rome. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius. Parish WEBSITE www.stignatiustoowong.org.au Current Newsletter now on our website!
