Karl Krueger, Ph.D.-Library Director & Professor of the History of Christianity This three week series examines the German Bibles that Martin Luther worked on in 1534 and 1541. It presents Luther as an editor and illustrator who worked closely with the printers in Wittenberg so that text and image would showcase evangelical theology. The sessions feature PowerPoint presentations that let us see and experience the novelty of Luther's integrative approach. Come, see, and be enriched. www.trinitylansdale.com PAGE 6 On Monday, January 19th, families will be assembling snack bags for the Boys & Girls Club as part of a day of service. Mlk service project Help Sort/Organize Household Items Donated for Refugee Families Monday, Jan. 19, 9 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Help refugees who are resettling in the Philadelphia area. Over the past year, many churches have donated household items for refugees, but the storage space needs to be organized and the household items need to be sorted. Please consider helping out. We will be meeting at St. Marks Lutheran Church, 508 Harry Street, Conshohocken. We will be working from 9noon. Break for a pizza lunch with a short information session about refugee resettlement work and how people can help. Then if people want to continue to work, they are welcome to stay. Contact Jane Jorgensen at 215-470-8005, for more information. The new refugee family living in Souderton (a single mother and six young kids - four to be in school soon) needs help getting to the grocery store on a weekly basis. The mother doesn't speak any English but is now fairly familiar with American grocery stores and how to buy the food with her food stamp card. One person could handle this task when the four oldest start school but it probably works best for two people to work together. Household Item Collections Lutheran Children and Family Service resettles many refugee families each year to the Philadelphia area. Refugees often arrive here with very little - their belongings fitting into one small bag. For refugees to begin a new life in the USA, they need many things. One way we can help them is by providing a furnished place they can call home. Below is a list of some of the additional items that are still needed. Can openers – manual is best Cookware (pots, pans, saucepans) Kitchen trash bins and bags Dust pans Dish soap Sponges Brooms Mops Mini trash bins and bags Laundry detergent Bathroom cleaner Pillows (new) Digital alarm clocks Toilet paper Bars of soap Queen or twin bed sheets Contact Jane Jorgensen at 215-470-8005, for more information. Additional information can be found at www.josephspeople.org W EEK As a means of recognizing the witness of exemplary Christians throughout church history, Evangelical Lutheran Worship includes many commemorations which may be observed in corporate worship as well as in personal devotions. Sunday, January 18-Confession of Peter Today the church remembers the apostle Peter's great acknowledgement of Jesus as "the Christ, the Son of the living God." This festival serves as a fitting beginning to the week in which we particularly pray that all Christians might be united in faith and witness. Monday, January 19-Henry, Bishop of Uppsala, martyr, died 1156 When Erik, King of Sweden, determined to invade Finland for the purpose of converting the people there to Christianity, Henry went with him. Henry is recognized as the patron saint of Finland. Wednesday, January 21-Agnes, martyr, died 304 Agnes was a girl of about thirteen living in Rome. The details of her martyrdom are not clear, but she gave witness to her faith and was put to death as a result, most likely by the sword. The church has honored her as one of the chief martyrs of her time. Sunday, January 25-Conversion of Paul The week of prayer begun by the remembrance of Peter's confession now comes to an end as we recall the pivotal moment in the life of the other pillar of the early church, the apostle Paul. His encounter with the risen Christ turned him from persecutor of the followers of Christ to one of their leaders. From Sundays and Seasons.com. Copyright 2014 Augsburg Fortress. All rights reserved.
