HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH Iris Lane & South A1A, Vero Beach, Florida PARISH OFFICE 500 Iris Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32963 (772) 231-0671 www.holycrossverobeach.org Monday: 1:00 - 4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday: 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (Closed for lunch: 11:45 -12:45 p.m.) PRIESTS OF THE PARISH Rev. Richard Murphy Rev. Jim Brucz, CSP Deacon Richard Blake Deacon Wayne Creelman MISSION STATEMENT We CELEBRATE the Gospel when we encounter Jesus Christ in the Sacraments and through prayer. We TEACH the Gospel in order to strengthen each family in their knowledge of and in their relationship with God. We LIVE the Gospel by seeking justice, granting forgiveness and through works of service which enhance the spiritual, emotional, social and physical well-being of the entire community. This is what the Lord asks of you: Only this To act justly To love tenderly To walk humbly with your God Micah 6:8 October 19, 2014 Page 1 Celebration of the Sacraments “The purpose of the sacraments is to sanctify men, to build up the Body of Christ and, finally, to give worship to God. Because they are signs, they also instruct. They not only presuppose faith, but by words and objects they also nourish, strengthen and express it. That is why they are called ‘sacraments of faith’.” — Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1123 Eucharist Saturday Vigil Masses: Sunday Masses: Daily Masses: 5:30 PM 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 10:45 AM, 12:15 PM Monday through Saturday 8:00 AM Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament: Monday through Friday 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Saturday 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM Sunday 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM Baptism Requesting the Sacrament of Baptism for a child involves a serious obligation and a faith commitment on the part of both parents. In order to prepare both parents for this task, they will be requested to attend a Baptismal Preparation Session prior to the Baptism. To register, call the Family Life Office (231-0671). The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd Saturday of each month. A date for Baptism cannot be scheduled until the necessary preparation has been completed. Parents are encouraged to begin preparation prior to the birth of their child. Confirmation Candidates are those already baptized and who have received the necessary formation in religious education. Candidates must be at least in the 9th grade to receive this Sacrament. Reconciliation The Sacrament is celebrated each Saturday 11:00 AM 12:00 Noon except Holy Saturday. Anointing of the Sick The Sacrament is administered on request to those who are ill at home, in the hospital or nursing home. Please call the Parish Office (231-0671). It also is administered on the First Saturday of every month after the 8:00 AM Mass. Matrimony Congratulations on your engagement. Call the Parish Office (231-0671) to make arrangements at least six months in advance. It is necessary that either the prospective bride, groom or their family are registered members of Holy Cross Parish. Holy Orders If you feel you may have a vocation to serve the people of God in the Priesthood of Jesus Christ, contact Fr. Thomas Lafreniere at the Diocesan Vocation Office (561-7759555) or speak to one of the parish priests. We give God something that we do not give to any earthly ruler. That thing is worship. And this is precisely why we are gathered here—to worship God, Creator of the universe and Lord of all. First Reading (Is 45:1.4-6). The return of the people from exile—a return made possible by King Cyrus—is seen as a sign of God’s love for his people, Israel, and of his lordship over all peoples. Second Reading (1 Thess 1:1-5). Here we see Paul’s concern for the Christians at Thessalonika. Gospel (Mt 22:15-21). This is the story of an effort by the enemies of Jesus to trap him into saying something incriminating. The question put to Jesus was a test question to see whether he would declare himself on the side of those who opposed paying taxes to the Romans (e.g. the Pharisees), or on the side of those who collaborated with the Romans (e.g. the Herodians). If he said Yes, he would lose the esteem of the people, and would be regarded as a traitor to the Jewish cause and the Jewish religion. If he said No, he could be denounced as fomenting rebellion against Rome. In his answer Jesus recognizes that the State has a role, but its power is limited and does not supplant God. You are invited to write in this book the names of family and friends who have died. The Book of Remembrance will then be displayed in the Sanctuary area beginning Saturday, November 1st so that the deceased will be especially remembered at all Liturgies during the month of November. Wedding Renewal The Church continues to uphold the Sacrament of Matrimony despite a high rate of divorce. The solidarity of the family plays a major role in stabilizing our society. In order to boost this solidarity, husbands and wives should avail themselves of the opportunity to renew their marriage commitment whether it is on the date of the marriage or a general renewal which takes place annually in the Parish. On Saturday, October 25, we will have a renewal of vows during the 5:30 PM Mass. A wine and cheese reception will take place on the veranda immediately following Mass. All married couples are invited. On Sunday, October 26, parents who have children eligible for the reception of the Eucharist for the first time will participate in an enrollment ceremony at the 9:00 AM Mass. Parents of First Communicants play a very active roll in preparing their child to receive the Sacrament with the help of resources from the Religious Education Department. We ask for the prayers of all parishioners for the parents and candidates. A Novena of Masses for the faithful departed will take place during the month of November. Please use the appropriate intention envelopes included in your monthly package or found in the vestibule of the Church to have your loved ones remembered in this Novena. In addition, these intentions will be placed on the altar during the month of November. Please return the envelopes on or before November 1st. October 19, 2014 What can a Serran do to enrich the ministry of the priest? This is the subject of Father Antony Pulikal O,C,D,. parochial vicar at St, Helen's Catholic Church. Please join us Tuesday, October 28th for Mass at 6:00 PM which is followed by dinner and a talk in our Parish Hall. Call Joan Campana at 234-5717 for further information. A special Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 3 at 5:30 PM in the Church. The intention for this Mass will be for the deceased Knights and for the deceased spouses of Knights. A dinner including dessert and coffee will be provided afterwards at the Parish Hall. Widows of deceased members are invited at no charge. Reservations and payment of $20.00pp are required to be made in advance, no later than October 30th, with checks payable to the Knights of Columbus and forwarded to the Parish Office. Don’t forget to B.Y.O.B set-ups will be available! The Diocese of Palm Beach has adopted a Mission Co-Op program which allows some of our Church Non-Profits who are in need to appeal to parishioners. This year Our Lady of Guadalupe (OLG), in Fellsmere, has been chosen to be our Mission Co-Op candidate. Fr. Sabas, the administrator at OLG, will speak at all the Masses on the weekend of October 25-26. The second collection at those Masses will benefit OLG. 822-HCC October 19, 2014 Page 3 Thursday, October 30 from 4:00-6:00 PM all 6th-11th grade students and their families are invited to John Carroll High School for a tour of the campus and to meet the students and staff. For more information call 772-464-5200 Stewardship is recognizing that everything we have is truly God’s. Thus, when Jesus says, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar's; give to God what belongs to God,” we need to understand that everything belongs to God. WE ARE STEWARDS . . . and this is how we live out our stewardship! To be a good Christian steward is to recognize that God has blessed us richly. We also need to acknowledge those blessings by returning a portion of our gifts of time, talent, and treasure in gratitude. Treasure - The offertory for the weekend of October 11-12 totaled $20,774.53 of which $1,041.00 came from on-line giving. We would like to thank The Source, who are helping us to distribute our funds to those who have requested assistance from Holy Cross. August and September have been extremely demanding with payments for utilities. We are also presently helping 4 families on a temporary basis who are encountering some unexpected issues at the present time. Thanks to all parishioners who are so generous in donating to the Community Outreach Fund. Time and Talent - The Holy Cross Service Ministry is gathering a team to represent Holy Cross in the 11th annual “A Walk to Remember” to be held on Saturday, November 8 at 8:00 AM in Riverside Park to benefit the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association. You may walk in honor of, or in memory of a loved one who has been affected by Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. If you are able to join the Holy Cross Team, please call Pat Kroger at 231-0671 or stop by the parish office. May God bless and reward your stewardship. “For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven . . . a time to love . . .
