Celebration of the Sacraments
“The purpose of the sacraments is to sanctify men, to
build up the Body of Christ and, finally, to give worship
to God. Because they are signs, they also instruct. They
not only presuppose faith, but by words and objects they
also nourish, strengthen and express it. That is why they
are called ‘sacraments of faith’.”

Baptism
Requesting the Sacrament of Baptism for a child involves a
serious obligation and a faith commitment on the part of
both parents. In order to prepare both parents for this task,
they will be requested to attend a Baptismal Preparation
Session prior to the Baptism. To register, call the Family
Life Office (231-0671). The Sacrament of Baptism is
celebrated on the 2nd Saturday of each month. A date for
Baptism cannot be scheduled until the necessary
preparation has been completed. Parents are encouraged to
begin preparation prior to the birth of their child.
Confirmation
Candidates are those already baptized and who have
received the necessary formation in religious education.
Candidates must be at least in the 9th grade to receive this
Sacrament.
Reconciliation
The Sacrament is celebrated each Saturday 11:00 AM 12:00 Noon except Holy Saturday.
Anointing of the Sick
The Sacrament is administered on request to those who are
ill at home, in the hospital or nursing home. Please call the
Parish Office (231-0671). It also is administered on the First
Saturday of every month after the 8:00 AM Mass.
Matrimony
Congratulations on your engagement. Call the Parish Office
(231-0671) to make arrangements at least six months in advance.
It is necessary that either the prospective bride, groom or their
family are registered members of Holy Cross Parish.
Holy Orders
If you feel you may have a vocation to serve the people of
God in the Priesthood of Jesus Christ, contact Fr. Thomas
Lafreniere at the Diocesan Vocation Office (561-7759555) or speak to one of the parish priests.
Most of us live very busy lives. As a result we may be
spiritually impoverished. Today’s Gospel shows us how
in the midst of all his work Jesus took time out to pray.
The Eucharistic Celebration provides us with a great
opportunity to take time out to be with the Lord.
First Reading (Job 7:1-4.6-7). Wrestling with the
problem of why the innocent should suffer, Job takes a
rather pessimistic view of life.
Second Reading (1 Cor 9:16-19.22-23). St. Paul tells
how he has made himself all things to all people in order to
bring them the Good News of salvation.
Gospel (Mk 1:29-39). In the midst of his work of
teaching and healing, Jesus finds it necessary to escape to
a lonely place to pray.
The Book of Job
confronts the problem of
suffering. The common
explanation was that
suffering was a
punishment for sin. But,
though Job is a good man, he suffers greatly. His suffering
causes him to take a gloomy view of life. (First Reading)
This sets the scene for the Gospel. However, what we see
in the Gospel is not Jesus’ answer to the question “why
suffering?”, but his response to actual suffering. He heals
the sick and proclaims the good news of salvation. The
Gospel also shows the urgency with which he dedicated
himself to preaching the Gospel, something we see
exemplified also in Paul. (Second Reading)
In the midst of his activity Jesus found time to pray in
quiet places. It was during these hours of solitude that he
maintained and fostered the most important thing in his
life—his relationship with the Father. Here lay the secret
of his successful ministry.

When you read this letter I will have completed a week of therapy and rehabilitation and I am beginning to feel a little
stronger and less dependent in my movements. An important part of the healing process is to allow sufficient time to rest. For
that reason I request a limit on visitations, in order to give me the necessary time to heal both physically and mentally.
Providing quality service to the people of Holy Cross is my priority and this is my goal and a great source of
motivation. In my physical absence I am indebted to Fr. Brucz for his unconditional service to all of us. I am also very
much indebted to Debbie and the parish staff for their services and sacrifices. In addition, thank you to Fr. Edwards and
the priests of St. Helen's for their support and cooperation. Your prayers and good wishes do not go unnoticed and will
be a great support in my recuperation.
I am available to you in every way possible except physical presence. I ask you to communicate, in writing, any
issues that may need my attention and give them to Debbie. She will pass them on to me.
I understand Mulligan, my faithful dog, is suffering from anxiety separation which is a two way street! He visits so we
can at least meet up outside in a designated area at the hospital, along with the other dogs. Mulligan, more than the
others does not like to have his "pops" to be out of commission.

As we go to print Bishop Barbarito was due for surgery
in Miami which took place on Monday February 2. The
medical personnel, through examination, had decided
that the Bishop had a benign brain tumor in an area that
could eventually be a serious problem. In order to
correct the issue, the surgery needed to take place as
soon as possible. This way the situation could be
rectified and he could return to normal living in a very
short period of time. We understand that the surgery was
successful and presently he is recuperating. We ask you
for your prayers for his full recovery. May God bless
him!
As soon as we have more information we will let you
know.
Fr. Danny Murphy, a recently retired priest from
Brooklyn, has graciously offered his services at Holy
Cross for the next few months. He has an apartment
here in Vero Beach and plans on using it as a winter
residence. At this time, more than at any other time,
his willingness to help us is certainly a blessing.
Fr. Murphy has retired from active duty in Brooklyn as
of February 1st. His latest assignment was Pastor of
St. Saviour Church, Brooklyn. We are so happy that he
is willing to share all of his priestly services with the
Parish. Please welcome him with open arms!
The Order of Malta gathers each year at the beginning of
May to bring the sick to the Shrine of Our Lady of
Lourdes, France, to come in procession, to wash and drink
the waters of the Grotto and to pray for spiritual and
physical healing. The Vero Beach Order of Malta will
sponsors a special 10 AM Healing Mass at Holy Cross
Church on Saturday, February 14th which is held in
conjunction with the Feast of our Lady of Lourdes even though the Feast is annually on February 11th. The
Mass will include the Rite of Sprinkling with Holy Water from Lourdes. The Sacrament of the sick with the Rite of
Anointing will take place during the Mass. All who are in need of healing, whether it is in mind or body or both, are
invited to participate.

The Palm Beach Diocesan Council of Catholic Women is accepting applications for its Annual
Scholarship Award. One thousand dollars is awarded to each of three Catholic female
students graduating from eighth grade in the Diocese of Palm Beach who will attend a
Catholic High School in the Diocese of Palm Beach in the fall. The deadline is April 1, and
applications may be obtained in your Parish office or your Catholic school office. You can

The Holy Cross Women’s Guild is sponsoring our annual
luncheon, card and game party at 11:30 AM on Thursday,

Fr. Tom Stransky, is a Paulist priest who
assisted in the drafting of the Vatican II
Document on the Church’s relation to NonChristian Religions - especially the Jewish
people. 2015 marks the 50th Anniversary of
this document, known by its Latin title:
Nostra Aetate. Fr. Stransky will give a special
presentation on the document highlighting
stories about its composition and completion
including his encounters with Pope St. John
XXIII. That presentation will take place on
Thursday, February 12, from 8:30-9:00 AM
in the Church.

Today’s Scripture passages focus
on the themes of suffering and
healing, faith, preaching the
Good News, and prayer. Job
experiences tremendous
suffering, but holds on to his faith
in God. St. Paul proclaims that he
has been charged to preach the Gospel. Jesus teaches us,
as His followers, the importance of prayer and knowing
through faith that He will always strengthen us in times of
distress and heal us from our afflictions.
WE ARE STEWARDS . . .
and this is how we live out our stewardship!
To be a good Christian steward is to recognize that God
has blessed us richly. We also need to acknowledge those
blessings by returning a portion of our gifts of time,
talent, and treasure in gratitude.



Treasure - The offertory for the weekend of January
31 - February 1 totaled $38,448.77 of which
$1,451.27 was from on-line contributions. The
Community Outreach totaled $13,349.17 of which
$915.17 was from on-line contributions.
In conjunction with St. Helen Church an appeal for
needy veterans of Indian River County will take place
on the weekend of February 21-22. Many of our
veterans have limited financial means, some are
homeless, some are outpatients. The items requested
include: new men’s underwear, T-shirts, socks,
towels, wash cloths, non-alcoholic toiletries, blankets,
sweaters, health care items, twin or full size bed
sheets, phone cards, books and games. Of special
benefit would be ready to eat meals, canned food, and
other non-perishable items.
