Richard Murphy Rev. Jim Brucz, CSP Deacon Richard Blake Deacon Wayne Creelman MISSION STATEMENT We CELEBRATE the Gospel when we encounter Jesus Christ in the Sacraments and through prayer. We TEACH the Gospel in order to strengthen each family in their knowledge of and in their relationship with God. We LIVE the Gospel by seeking justice, granting forgiveness and through works of service which enhance the spiritual, emotional, social and physical well-being of the entire community. This is what the Lord asks of you: Only this To act justly To love tenderly To walk humbly with your God Micah 6:8 Page 2 February 15, 2015 Celebration of the Sacraments “The purpose of the sacraments is to sanctify men, to build up the Body of Christ and, finally, to give worship to God. Because they are signs, they also instruct. They not only presuppose faith, but by words and objects they also nourish, strengthen and express it. That is why they are called ‘sacraments of faith’.” — Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1123 Eucharist Saturday Vigil Masses: Sunday Masses: Daily Masses: 4:00 PM 5:30 PM 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 10:45 AM, 12:15 PM Monday through Friday 8:00 AM 12:15 PM Saturday 8:00AMOnly Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament: Monday through Friday 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Saturday 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM Sunday 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM Baptism Requesting the Sacrament of Baptism for a child involves a serious obligation and a faith commitment on the part of both parents. In order to prepare both parents for this task, they will be requested to attend a Baptismal Preparation Session prior to the Baptism. To register, call the Family Life Office (231-0671). The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd Saturday of each month. A date for Baptism cannot be scheduled until the necessary preparation has been completed. Parents are encouraged to begin preparation prior to the birth of their child. Confirmation Candidates are those already baptized and who have received the necessary formation in religious education. Candidates must be at least in the 9th grade to receive this Sacrament. Reconciliation The Sacrament is celebrated each Saturday 11:00 AM 12:00 Noon except Holy Saturday. Anointing of the Sick The Sacrament is administered on request to those who are ill at home, in the hospital or nursing home. Please call the Parish Office (231-0671). It also is administered on the First Saturday of every month after the 8:00 AM Mass. Matrimony Congratulations on your engagement. Call the Parish Office (231-0671) to make arrangements at least six months in advance. It is necessary that either the prospective bride, groom or their family are registered members of Holy Cross Parish. In biblical times people did not touch lepers for fear of contagion. Yet, Jesus reached out and touched lepers. He still reaches out to us. First Reading (Lv 13:1-2.45-46). Lepers were considered ritually unclean and were compelled to live apart from the community. Second Reading (1 Cor 10:31-11:1). St. Paul urges us never to do anything offensive to anyone but to do everything for the glory of God. Gospel (Mk 1:40-45). This tells of the cure of a leper by Jesus. Leprosy is the clear theme of the First Reading and the Gospel. In biblical times lepers were treated as pariahs. Leprosy was the ultimate uncleanness. It made the victim an outcast not only socially, but also in the religious sphere. Jesus broke through all the religious and social taboos and reached out a loving and healing hand to the leper. In this way we see how a Christian community should deal with sinners and people society rejects. Besides, a Christian is one who has been “cleansed” by Christ in Baptism, and who ought to spread the “good news”. In the Gospel we have an early instance of what scholars call Mark’s “Messianic Secret”, whereby Jesus seems to hide his identity as the Messiah and Son of God until it is made apparent after his death and resurrection. Thomas Lafreniere at the Diocesan Vocation Office (561-7759555) or speak to one of the parish priests. 822-HCC February 15, 2015 Page 3 Fr. Murphy wishes to express his thanks and appreciation for the many good wishes and prayers that so many have expressed. It is overwhelming, according to Fr. Murphy. He has been discharged from the rehabilitation hospital and is presently at home under home care guidance and is glad to be at home. His broken leg is non-weight bearing until at least mid March. He is also most grateful for the support he is receiving from the Priests, Deacons and Parish Staff. THE NAILS OF THE CROSS The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18. Masses on that day will be celebrated at: 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 10:45 AM, 12:15 PM, 5:30 PM With the distribution of ashes taking place after the Gospel. In addition, a special Prayer Service, with the Distribution of Ashes will take place at 2:00 PM. Please note: Mass is not celebrated at this time. A full schedule of the entire Lenten Season is provided to you in A Lenten Covenant which is included in this bulletin. The Covenant also contains the fasting regulations for the season of Lent. There is an abundance of Lenten Literature in the Vestibule, some of which was donated by a parishioner, for which we are grateful. LENTEN PENITENTIAL SERVICE A Lenten Penitential Service will take place on Saturday, February 21st at 10:30 a.m. Following the service there will be an opportunity for those who wish to receive the Sacrament privately. This is an excellent opportunity to prepare for the Season of Lent. As you leave Mass on Ash Wednesday, you are invited to take a plain, stark nail to remind you of the true cost of our salvation. Let us keep it with us in pocket and purse during this year’s Lenten journey. Our Catechumen and Candidates are joining with us in embracing the cross and all its awe on our journey of faith. Let this nail remind us to pray for them so that we, too, may be renewed in faith. Keep the nail and then, if you wish, return it on Good Friday when you come to venerate the cross as a sign of having walked with the Lord during Lent. On the first Sunday of Lent we will celebrate a special Rite of Sending at the 10:45 a.m. Mass. During this celebration, our 1 Catechuman (unbaptized) and 5 Candidates (previously baptized in another Christian faith tradition) will be formally sent from Holy Cross Parish to go to St. Ignatius Cathedral later that afternoon. At the Cathedral they will meet all the rest of the Catechumens and Candidates of the Palm Beach Diocese as Bishop Barbarito welcomes them and calls everyone to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. Next Sunday, you will get a chance to wish them well as together we begin their final preparation during the season of Lent. Fr. Terry Ryan will continue his Lenten Series on the spirituality of several mystics every Thursday through March 12th. This series takes place following the 8:00 a.m. Mass. The session on February 19th will focus on John Tauler part II. 822-HCC Page 4 February 15, 2015 We have received the first report for this year’s Diocesan Services Appeal. We are pleased to announce that 205 families have responded to the tune of $92,499.00. We are extremely grateful for your generosity. We anticipate similar generosity from those who have not yet responded. Please do so in the coming weeks. Our goal this year is $371,500.00. Bishop Barbarito is inviting priests, deacons, religious and lay faithful in the Diocese of Palm Beach to participate in an important consultation being conducted by the Vatican. The consultation is called Lineamenta and is being conducted in preparation for the Synod of Bishops who meet October 4-25, 2015 to discuss the topic, The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and Contemporary World. This consult is not a public opinion poll but is intended as a prayerful reflection and response to the challenges facing family life. The document is available in English on the diocesan website at www.diocesepb.org. Look for it on the bottom right. You may also print a hard copy from the same website. The faithful are asked to complete it online or send it no later than March 1, to: Office of the Bishop Diocese of Palm Beach Post Office Box 109650 Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410-9650 Diocesan Adult School of Christian Formation The Adult School of Christian Formation is a great way to deepen your knowledge and understanding of our faith, and to be certified , if you wish, as a Catechist. As Catholics, we are all called into being able to explain why we believe in teachings that go against the very culture in which we live. For example, can you explain why same sex “marriage” goes against Catholic teaching? Can you explain why the dignity of the human person should be the foundation of our society? Social Justice is the topic of the upcoming class, offered at St. Helen Parish, beginning on Monday, February 23, at 7:00 PM in the North Room, with instructor Carolyn Dean, MA. Class will run 6 weeks, ending on April 6, no class during Holy Week. Social Justice studies the 7 areas encompassed by the Church’s Social Doctrine... Do you know what they are? Come join our class and be a better informed, more dynamic Catholic. Cost for the class is $10.00. Cost for the book is $10.00$15.00. Registration is on the first night of the class. If you love your faith, come get to know it better. Holy Cross Parish will host a Dinner/Concert on St. Patrick’s Day, Monday, March 17 in the Parish Hall. We are pleased to welcome back the Dublin City Ramblers, direct from Dublin, Ireland. Doors will open at 6:00 PM. A sit-down dinner of corned beef and cabbage (catered by Culinary Capers) will be served at 6:30 PM. The cost will be $50/person which will include wine, beer and setups. Tickets are available in the Parish Office. The Holy Cross Women’s Guild is sponsoring our annual luncheon, card and game party at 11:30 AM on Thursday, February 19th. It will be in the Parish Hall and tickets are $15.00 per person. Tickets are available at the Parish Office. Mark your calendar and invite your friends and neighbors for a fun-filled afternoon! We invite any person interested in participating in a Christian meditation group called Centering Prayer, based on the teachings of Fr. Thomas Keating, to call Gail Keefer at 231-3303, or the Center for Spiritual Care at 567-1233. The group meets on Tuesdays at 3:00 PM at the Center for Spiritual Care. Serra Club of Indian River Area will meet Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Mass begins at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner and speaker in the Parish Center. Our guest this month will be Father Terry Ryan. Father Ryan is a Paulist priest, serving in San Francisco, California and in in residence at Old St. Mary's Catholic Church. He will be speaking on the Paulist Fathers and their Outreach in California. If you would like to join us that evening, please call Joan Campana for dinner reservations at 2345717. The cost of the dinner is $21.00. For information about Serra Club please call Nancy Curtis at 978-0956. 822-HCC February 15, 2015 Page 5 “Do everything for the glory of God.” If we live God-centered lives, always remembering that God is a part of our lives and He is measuring our lives by how we treat and reach out to others, we will be doing everything for the “glory of God”. WE ARE STEWARDS . . . and this is how we live out our stewardship! To be a good Christian steward is to recognize that God has blessed us richly. We also need to acknowledge those blessings by returning a portion of our gifts of time, talent, and treasure in gratitude. Treasure - The offertory for the weekend of February 7-8 totaled $37,603.94 of which $2,973.94 was from on-line contributions. In conjunction with St. Helen Church an appeal for needy veterans of Indian River County will take place on the weekend of February 21-22. Many of our veterans have limited financial means, some are homeless, some are outpatients. The items requested include: new men’s underwear, T-shirts, socks, towels, wash cloths, non-alcoholic toiletries, blankets, sweaters, health care items, twin or full size bed sheets, phone cards, books and games. Of special benefit would be ready to eat meals, canned food, and other non-perishable items. For additional information or questions call John Brady at 772-2347518. Time and Talent - Thank you….To those who were so generous in participating in the food drive. The beneficiaries of the food drive were the Food Pantry of Indian River County and Our Father’s Table. A special thank you to Dave and Ceil McDuffy and Willie and Cathy LaCroix for organizing this event. May God bless and reward your stewardship. “For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven . . . a time to heal . . . Our Sunday celebration is marked with the signs of the season. We see the wood of the cross that is our salvation and the purple of fasting, repentance and renewal. We enter into Lent each year and continue to do it over and over all our lives trying to “get it right”, trying to conform more clearly to Christ Jesus and the Gospel way of life he preached. Let us, therefore, make a COVENANT of prayer and renewal as we walk our Lenten journey and draw closer to the joy of Easter. Here is a list of opportunities for formal prayer during liturgy and elsewhere. May we “change our hearts this time” as the Lord calls us to “come back to me with all your heart.” This year we are blessed to walk with our CATECHUMEN and CANDIDATES on the road toward their initiation as Catholics at the Easter Vigil. Now in its ninth year, we will show first run motion pictures and then discuss the images, themes, and content to see how they reflect or challenge Christian values. These films exist in the context of our contemporary culture and, as such, reflect the director’s view of reality. Because of this, please refer to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) ratings for each film and then decide who in your family should attend the screenings. The films will be shown in the Parish Hall. The theme of this year’s festival is Encounters that can change lives. Unless otherwise noted, there will be two showings of each film: Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. February 19 ONLY Heaven is for Real - PG (2005) 99 minutes A small-town father and mother must find the courage and conviction to share their son’s extraordinary, life-changing experience of his encounter with God. February 26 and March 01 Philomena - PG - 13 (2013) 98 minutes A world-weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman's search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent. The film is a compelling narrative of human love and loss and ultimately celebrates life. It is both funny and sad and concerns two very different people, at different stages of their lives, who help each other and show that there is laughter even in the darkest places. March 05 and 08 The Railway Man - R (2013) 116 minutes A former British Army officer, who was tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labor camp during World War II, discovers that the man responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him with surprising results. March 12 and 15 Malificent - PG (2014) 97 minutes A vengeful fairy is driven to curse an infant princess in this reboot of the Charles Perrault fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty”. She eventually discovers that not only is the child the one person who can restore peace to a troubled land, but she also presents a surprising picture of the nature of true love. March 19 ONLY Joshua - G (2002) 91 minutes Based on the best-selling novel by Joseph Girzone, Joshua is the story about a visitor to a small town whose personality and extraordinary abilities transform the lives of all with whom he encounters.
