Heinens, Target and Giant Eagle offer school programs. Getting the word out on these is
needed!

Fall Fundraiser Read-A-Thon (September 26 - October 3, 2014)
This is our primary fundraising event for the year. The proceeds from this event finance
the majority of activities of the Bissell PTA throughout the year. Parents, families and
friends sponsor students for minutes they read during the event. Many volunteers will be
needed to ensure this event is a success. Committee will need to organize the assembly
kick-off, solicit local businesses for sponsorship, create and assemble fundraising packets,
collect prizes and do daily announcements and drawings. This is a highlight at Bissell!
Field Day (Last week of school)
Assist Bissell gym teachers with planning a fun and eventful Field Day at Bissell!
General/Last Minute Volunteer
We need last minute help occasionally for the library, staff appreciation events and with
our other events.
Holiday Shop (December 8-December 12, 2014)
The shop gives students an opportunity to purchase holiday gifts for special people in
their lives at a very low cost. The committee members order inventory, schedules classes
to purchase gifts, set up/tear down and arrange for volunteers to help with the shopping
process.
Market Day (3 times per year)
Market Day is a district-wide PTA year-round fundraiser. Each school is responsible for
providing volunteers for 3 separate months of order pickup. (Bissell has November, March
and July). This involves making reminder phone calls and helping on distribution nights at
Wilcox on 3 separate occasions in the months listed. Our District PTA is looking for a
chairperson to take this over. It is minimal time each month and all orders are
done online!
Mini Relay For Life (Spring)
This is an American Cancer Society week-long event and fundraiser. This is a week that
we remind students about keeping ourselves safe in the sun and remembering our loved
ones lost and still fighting against cancer. Students will walk with their class outside and
will decorate luminarias. The committee will assist the designated staff members with
photocopying, securing prizes, prize distribution and the front entrance bulletin board.
Newsletter (Start in September/Monthly)
Develop a monthly newsletter to inform our Bissell families on the activities of PTA and
other events within our school. Multiple people can take turns creating the newsletters.
There needs to be a chairperson to manage and make sure they are completed.
Popcorn Friday (3-5 Fridays for the Year)
Students may buy popcorn on Fridays that supports Student Council. Committee chairs
will coordinate volunteers to pop popcorn and fill bags to complete orders given by the
school on Friday mornings, which runs weekly from October through April. We ask that

Right to Read Week (Spring)
Committee will work with the library assistant to create a theme and week-long activities
to encourage reading in our school and provide a fun and exciting week!
Room Parent (For classroom PTA Parties)
Each classroom has a committee of room parents that work together to plan the 3 PTA
sponsored parties. The Head Room Parent organizes the committee, puts together a
schedule of 4 room parents to work each party, works with the parents to plan the class
parties and assist teachers as requested with other activities. Room parents are expected
to take a variety of pictures during the three parties that will be used in the candids
section of the yearbook and possibly on the class page. One Room Parent needs to be
responsible for getting the pictures to the Yearbook committee per their request. The
Head Room Parent is also in charge of their teacher’s Staff Appreciation week of events
and engaging their classroom to participate. The Head Room Parent for your child’s class
will be selected at the first PTA meeting in September.
Science Festivals (May)
Committee offers an opportunity to develop a fun science festival in which the students
can partake in late spring after testing is complete. Committee will work with the staff
members as a team. There is one day for 2nd grade and one for 3rd grade.
Staff Appreciation (Monthly Events plus week in early May)
PTA honors Bissell’s hardworking teachers and staff. Typically this has been a week-long
event in May. The past two years, our Staff Appreciation Committee decided to do
monthly appreciation events (or small tokens of appreciation) instead of waiting until May.
This was well received and put less pressure on everyone for the one week. The week in
May is still special so the committee will still provide daily ideas/themes to the Head Room
Parents so they can create a great week for their teachers. Committee members will
coordinate various activities and recruit many volunteers necessary to make this
successful.
Teacher Grants (September through November)
PTA provides grant money to teachers. Based on predetermined criteria, committee
reviews all grant proposals submitted by Bissell teachers and in working with the
principal, will select winners of grants that benefit the most children.
Veteran’s Program (November)
November 2013 was the first ever Veteran’s Breakfast Program at Samuel Bissell. It was
limited to only a few classrooms of students. It was received so well that they have
decided to expand it to the entire school for 2014. The committee will work with the

music teacher to put together a special program for the families in our school who would
like to participate.
Yearbook (3 times, after each PTA party)
Need one to two people for this committee that will work with the Head Room Parents to
make sure pictures are turned in via disc from each classroom after each of the three PTA
parties to complete the classroom pages and yearbook candid pictures. The yearbook
company will design and complete the yearbook layout for us. You will need to create a
spreadsheet to manage this process to make sure all classrooms are represented.
