Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome.
The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of Rome. This is not St. Peter's, but it is the
Pope's cathedral. Also called the Church of Holy Savior or the Church of St. John Baptist, it
was the baptism church of ancient Rome. It was built in the time of Constantine and was
consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324. This feast became a universal celebration in honor of
the basilica called "the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world" as a sign
of love for and union with the See of Peter.

Dedication of The Lateran Basilica
If you were to go to the Eternal City you could visit this
church, one of the four so-called “major basilicas” of
Rome, and not know its significance. Some background
is necessary. The basilica sits on land donated to the
infant Church by the wealthy Lateran family way back
in the fourth century. Such a donation was only recently possible, as the Church had just been relieved of
official state persecution only a few years by decree of
the newly-converted emperor Constantine, who issued
his edict in 313 AD. Eleven years later, on November 9,
324 A.D., Pope St. Sylvester I dedicated the brand new
building. Ever since, this Church has been honored as
the locale of the pope’s official “seat” (cathedral) as the
Bishop of Rome. (It is a mistake to think this of St. Peter’s basilica.)
According to an inscription placed on the facade of the
present building, Pope Clement XII in the eighteenth
century declared that St. John Lateran is “the mother
and head of all the churches of Rome and the world.”
It was the site of five Ecumenical Councils. Pope Innocent X commissioned the present structure in 1646, so
it was already 130 years old when our country was
formed in Philadelphia.
Beneath the high altar of this church rests the remains
of a small wooden table on which, according to tradition, St. Peter himself celebrated Mass. The church
honors St. John the Baptist.
The real joy for us this day is captured in St. Paul’s Letter. He tells us that we are the real temple of God. No
building, no matter how historic or splendid in decor
can match that of a soul in love with God. No edifice of
material construction is as important to God as the
relationship we build with Him each day of our life.
So, while we remain proud of all the historical markers
a great basilica such as St. John Lateran gives us, there
is really only one mark that counts. It is His signature
on our souls.

This section describes a vision of the prophet in which
life-giving water flows down from the Temple mount,
a dramatic symbol of the life-giving power that
“flows” from God, who dwells in the sanctuary there.
Second Reading: I Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17
St. Paul compliments his Corinthian converts by
likening them to a holy temple, built on the solid foundation of Christ alone. But he also warns them that no
other can dare replace Christ.
Gospel: John 2:13-22
Here we come to the second of John’s seven “signs”
pointing to the reality of Jesus, coming right after the
Cana miracle story. John’s version of the event differs
from that in the other three Gospels. After driving
away the money-changers and the animal sellers, Jesus
predicts the fate of another “temple.”

John 2:13-22 The cleansing of the Temple is one of the
few events covered in all four Gospels. John’s Gospel
covers it in the most detailed way. Jesus, in this scene,
exhibits righteous anger aimed at the money changers
and the pigeon sellers.
When Jesus is asked for a sign he references destroying
the temple and raising it up in three days. The disciples
will remember these words after Jesus rises from the
dead. It will help to solidify in their minds the things
Our Lord told them.
Religious Education News: The Religious Education program has a great need for junior high catechists and
junior high substitute catechists. We are also in need of
bi-lingual office help on Mondays and Wednesdays
from 4:30-7 PM. Maybe God is calling you to this ministry. Advent is coming up. Maybe this is the Advent
service that God might be calling you to do. Thank You

Thanksgiving Food Drive
Collection for the Thanksgiving Food drive will
take place at all Masses this weekend. Suggested donation items: Gift cards & monetary donations, turkey, stuffing, vegetables, gravy,
cranberry sauce, canned soup/broth, rice,
pinto beans, canned pineapple and pumpkin, dry fruit
and nuts.
All donations will go to the RISE Thanksgiving Food
Drive which provided meals for 366 families last year.

He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of
the temple area, with the sheep and oxen...John 2:15
Why have we human beings, since ancient times, chosen to see our Creator as an angry God who requires
blood sacrifice? What an injustice to a loving God!
Does thinking of God as willing to spill blood make it
easier for us to spill blood?
In John's Gospel, Jesus enters the temple area which
had become a marketplace to support the economy
based on slaughtering and sacrificing animals. Jesus
drives out those selling the animals; he drives out, or
frees, the sheep, oxen and doves as he overturns the
tables ot those who were exchanging Roman coins for
Hebrew currency.
“Ron Rollheiser says, 'By the time of Jesus, the Temple
had become a giant butchery with priests killing animals non-stop. When Jesus drove out the moneychangers, it was estimated that 90 percent of commerce was linked to animal sacrifices.'
“Franciscan Richard Rohr suggests: ' For so many centuries people have been spilling blood to get to God.
But in the crucifixion it is reversed – God spills his own
blood to reach out to us. This is to take away our old
fear, that by spilling blood we try to appease an angry
God. There is no such thing as an angry God – only an
unconditionally loving God.' “

Food, like fashion, has its trends. Here’s what
you need to know about the most recent
batch of trendy foods.
Agave This sugar substitute is made from
cacti, and is thought to be a healthy alternative to granulated sugar in baking. Agave’s main benefit
is that it scores low on the glycemic index of between 15
and 30 compared with table sugar’s 65. This means that
consumption won’t result in dangerous spikes in blood
sugar that table sugar so often causes, making it a possible safe alternative for diabetics.
Nondairy Milk For the lactose-intolerant and those
wanting to avoid all animal foods, rice milk, almond
milk, and soy milk are becoming increasingly popular
food trends for good nutrition. For those sensitive to
dairy products, almond milk and rice milk are recommended.
Almond Butter is another almond-based food trend that
has some advantages over conventional peanut butter as
it contains more protein and less sugar than the peanut.
Quinoa Nutrient-rich whole grains and their high levels of digestion-friendly fiber are an essential component
of any balanced diet. Quinoa is prized for its versatility
and high protein content, and has fast become a restaurant and supermarket staple.
Chia Seeds and Teff are two other whole-grain foods
that are recommended. Chia can be added to smoothies
for added protein and easier bowel movements. The
Ethiopian grain teff is a good flour product for those
who have digestive issues and cannot tolerate gluten.
Coconut Oil was once thought to be a fat to avoid, but
recent research has found that its negative effects may
have been overstated. Because of coconut’s unique form
of saturated fat, it has been shown to raise metabolism
and slow digestion, promoting fullness and decreasing

Building Fund/Capital Campaign Fund
A big THANK YOU to all those who continue to support our
monthly Building/Capital Campaign Fund by making their
generous donations. We continue to pay our monthly mortgage payments of $8,446.86 and now have only 11 more
payments to make totaling $92,915.46 and will be paid off
in August of 2015. Along with these important loan payments we continue to provide the proper maintenance and
repairs required to keep our buildings and grounds in pristine condition, all the while paying very close attention to
costs. We are proud to say that our maintenance costs have
been reduced substantially this year over the previous several.
Over and above the day to day maintenance and repairs
there still are plans for several projects that will require
substantial investments. As noted previously, the parking lot
and concrete walks are a concern and will need to be addressed, along with our sound and computer system and
backup power.
Once the mortgage is paid off it will free up funds that will
enable us to make these necessary improvements, which is
why your continued support of the Building/Capital Campaign Fund is so important. In the meantime we will continue our current maintenance program to keep the building and grounds safe and in the best condition.
The Mass Offering Total for November 2: $15,682.19. Your
donations are important; they help Saint Anthony of Padua
continue the good work in the parish and the community.
Please remember the Parish in your Wills and in your Estate
Planning.

vital part in what we do in Christ’s name; we can all share

DEDICACION DE LA BASILICA DE LETRAN (Juan 2:13-22)
Para comprender este evangelio necesitamos tomar en cuenta tres elementos: El primero apunta a la intensión del evangelista Juan que, a diferencia de los otros evangelios que colocan este evento en la última semana de la vida de Jesús,
aquí se ve con un suceso mucho más temprano. La purificación que Jesús hace del templo es entendida como un símbolo de su propia muerte y resurrección. No queriendo decir
que la muerte de Jesús sea de purificación sino exponiendo
su vida, su comportamiento y hasta las últimas consecuencias (muerte y resurrección) como verdadero “lugar” de
alabanza a Día. Este acto simbólico de Jesús es un poder
inigualable. En primer lugar porque asume, critica y supera
toda la gran tradición del pueblo de Israel en relación a la
presencia de Dios.
El templo, como lugar físico es un espacio para vivir y celebrar lo sagrado de la vida del pueblo y de la obra de Dios. La
crítica de los profetas a los abusos del culto y de las reglas y
obligaciones de la religión judía y el templo encuentra en
esta acción de Jesús su máxima expresión, su mejor ejemplo.
En segundo lugar conviene notar que San Juan nos está mostrando también la manera como los discípulos y primeros
cristianos llegaron a comprender el lugar de Jesús frente a
las tradiciones de la fe judía. Sin olvidar que dichas tradiciones seguían vivas y actuantes en la conciencia y costumbre
de muchos de los cristianos convertidos.
En tercer lugar, conviene que entretejamos estos hilos del
evangelio para iluminar nuestra realidad de fe, la fiesta litúrgica que celebramos y nuestras actitudes personales.
La obra de Jesús y el amor de Dios tiene un lugar en el espacio físico del templo, pero nunca el templo podrá atrapar,
por así decirlo, a Dios, a la vida y a la fe. Mas, aun si atendemos a lo que sabemos a Jesús desde el punto de vista histórico y el testimonio de los mismos evangelios, el mismo, siendo
judío participo de las tradiciones religiosas y, en concreto, en
el templo. En este sentido ni los profetas ni Jesús fueron contra el templo, sino contra los usos y los abusos de este espacio
sagrado y lo sagrado del pueblo y la religión misma.
La lectura de este evangelio y sus líneas de sentido y mensaje
no se presentan de fácil, pero si posible, aplicación para la
fiesta que celebramos. La Basílica de San Juan de Letrán como primera y más antigua basílica (siglo IV) es considerada
la madre de todas las iglesias y basílicas de toda la iglesia
católica. Es también, junto con la basílica de San Pedro, la
sede el Obispo en Roma, el papa. Este regalo del emperador
Constantino marco el inicio de la cristiandad en la Iglesia.
Una mentalidad que aun late en muchos rincones de nuestra
iglesia. Hablando con sinceridad, el evangelio y Jesús como
tienen mucho que decir a los usos y abusos de los santuarios
en el mundo católico.
