Reflecting on God’s Word
In an article on “successful aging” (New Theology Review, November, 2010), Dr. Lawrence M. Lenoir proposes that the art of giving and receiving love is at the heart of growing old gracefully. Research shows that being in a loving relationship quiets the demons of depression and despair. So,
if you want to be healthy, be loving. Jesus would agree.
The rabbis of Jesus’ day argued about which was the greatest commandment of the six hundred
thirteen in the Torah. When the Pharisees asked Jesus, he answered that what God wanted most
from the chosen people who had been liberated from slavery and called to live in a covenantal relationship was a return of the love God showed to them. This love has two faces: loving God totally
and loving one another as one loves oneself.
Loving is a contagious activity. If you are loved, you tend to be loving. Paul is sounding this note
when he writes to the Thessalonians about how they became imitators of him and his fellow evangelizers Timothy and Silvanus, and of the Lord himself, receiving the word and living in faith, joy,
and love for each other, because they believed in God’s love for them, revealed in Christ.
Our love must flow outward in compassionate generosity. The Lord called on Israel to show its love
by not oppressing aliens, not wronging weak orphans and defenseless widows, and not extorting
the poor by demanding interest on loans. No less is asked of those who have received the Holy
Spirit and live in community with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That’s us. Love one another.

Please Remember Your Parish

If a person dies without leaving a valid WILL,
the property and money owed at the time of
death will be distributed according to the
State’s “intestate succession laws. "Their
laws do not always reflect most people’s
wishes. Why not consider serving your parish
as it has served you? When making your final
arrangements, please remember St. Columba Church in your will.
Thoughts from Fr. Charles…
This will serve to inform you that the parish boiler system has failed. Early last week, I was notified
of a “leak situation” from the main boiler that supplies heat to the School and Church. After HVAC
evaluation by one of our usual Vendors, it was determined that the boiler is not reparable and will
have to be replaced. Replacement parts or complete replacement units are no longer available as
the model/brand is obsolete since around the year 2000. This leaves us no choice except to replace this equipment as soon as possible. The Archdiocese Dept. of Facilities and Construction
along with Bishop Perry’s Office have been notified of this failure. The “Bid Process” has been
started, and we will be informed very soon regarding who will do the work and how much it will
cost. Preliminary estimates are in the range of $25,000 to $30,000! We will have to dip into savings
once again in order to meet this expense. I am considering launching a “Boiler Fund” for extra donations to help us offset this cost. It’s a “simple matter” ― we MUST have the ability to heat the
Church and School regardless of the cost. Keep your prayers flowing as this is not likely the last of
capital expenditures that we will need to make. Our physical plant is aging, and repairs/
replacements are inevitable.
Another topic has to do with the Parish Transformation Initiative [PTI] and the Archdiocese Capital
Campaign [TTWCI] for which we are scheduled beginning early spring of 2015. Due to a readjusting of the Capital Campaign calendar which the Archdiocese has made because of changes in its
Consultants for the project, I will request that St. Columba’s PTI and TTWCI campaigns be rescheduled to occur “in tandem”. This will give us about one more year to prepare. Otherwise, the
projects are scheduled in a “split calendar” which will make it more challenging to accomplish good
results. Very soon we will begin to talk about volunteers, committees etc. which will need to be in
place for these projects to begin and be successful. Working on them “together” will mean that
some of the same people/volunteers may work through both projects with time savings and without
duplicating efforts. You will be kept informed of the plan and timetable.
