St Andrew: Sent to Share the Good News
Ite, missa est. With this Latin phrase, the priest or deacon
sends forth the congregation at the end of Mass. We translate this in
English as “Go, the Mass is ended” or in Spanish “Podéis ir en paz”.
While I would never purport to be a Latin scholar, I think these translations are weak; they miss the dynamism of this phrase. Another
translation of the Latin would be: “Go, you are sent”. It is from the
Latin missa est (it has been sent) that we derive the word “Mass” for
the Eucharistic liturgy we celebrate. This simple little phrase contains
a rich teaching on the Christian life. Like the Apostles whom Christ
sent to preach the Good News to the entire world, we are sent to share
with others the Christ we encounter in word and sacrament at Mass.
Among the twelve apostles was our patron, Saint Andrew. The
Gospel of Saint John tells us that Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist and was present when he
pointed out Jesus as “the Lamb of God”. Andrew followed Jesus and “the first thing he did was seek out
his brother Simon and tell him, ‘We have found the Messiah!’” (John 1, 36-40). It is Simon who Jesus
re-names as Peter and to whom he will entrust the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. During the public
ministry of the Lord, on one occasion when “a vast crowd kept following” Jesus and there was a concern as
to how to feed them, it was Andrew who presented to the Lord “a lad who had five barley loaves and a
couple of dried fish”. Jesus multiplies these simple gifts and feeds the hungry crowd (John 6, 1-14). When
some Greeks (that is non-Jews) approached Andrew and “put the request to him: ‘Sir, we would like to see
Jesus’”, he brought them to the Lord (John 12, 20-22). Tradition holds that Saint Andrew preached the
Gospel as far as Romania, Ukraine, Cyprus and Georgia (the country, not the state!). Because of this, he is
highly regarded by the Eastern Orthodox Churches of those areas. Andrew encounters Christ and leads
others to Christ. This is what “Ite, missa est” means. Like Saint Andrew and all the apostles, we are sent to
share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
With the kind permission of Archbishop Wenski, we will transfer the feast of Saint Andrew, the
Apostle, from November 30th to Sunday, November 16th. That weekend will be a special opportunity for us
as a parish to reflect on the example of Saint Andrew who led others to Christ. I hope it will also be an
opportunity for each of us to ask the Holy Spirit to make us eager to share the Gospel with others, especially those who have grown lukewarm in their practice of the Catholic faith. This is what the popes, beginning with Pope Saint John Paul II, have called the new evangelization.
Drawing from a love of the Mass, we also adore our Lord present in the Blessed Sacrament. This
act of worship should always deepen our love for the Eucharistic liturgy (the Mass) and enliven our participation in the Mass. On Sunday, November 23rd beginning at 3:00 pm we will hold our annual Eucharistic
Procession. We worship the Lord at Mass and we give public witness to our faith by the Eucharistic
procession. Please plan to join us and bring along a guest.

San Andrés: Enviado a Compartir la Buena Nueva
Ite, missa est. Con esta frase en Latín, el sacerdote o diácono hace el envio a la
congregación al final de la Misa. Traducimos esto en inglés como “Vaya, la Misa ha terminado” o en español “Podeís ir en paz”. Aunque yo nunca me concideraría un experto en
Latín, pienso que estas traducciones son débiles; pierden el dinamismo de esta frase. Otra
traducción del Latín sería: “Vaya, ha sido enviado”. Es del Latín missa est (ha sido enviado)
que se deriva la palabra “Misa” para la liturgía Eucarística que celebramos. Esta pequeña y sencilla frase contiene una
rica enseñanza sobre la vida Cristiana. Al igual que los Apóstoles quienes Cristo envio a predicar la Buena Nueva a
todo el mundo, así somos enviado a compartir con otros el Cristo que encontramos en la palabra y en el sacramento
en la Misa.
Entre los doce apóstoles estaba nuestro patrón, San Andrés. El Evangelio de San Juan nos dice que Andrés
fue discípulo de Juan el Bautista y estuvo presente cuando señaló a Jesús como “el Cordero de Dios”. Andrés seguió
a Jesús y “lo primero que hizo fue buscar a su hermano Simón y decirle”’ ¡“Hemos encontrado al Mesías”! (Juan 1,3640). Es Simón, a quien Jesús llama Pedro y a quien le confiaría las llaves del Reino del Cielo. Durante el Ministerio
público del Señor, en una ocasión cuando “una gran multitud seguía” a Jesús y había una gran preocupación de como
los alimentarían, fue Andrés quien le presentó al Señor “un muchacho que tenía cinco panes de cebada y un par de
pescados secos”. Jesús multiplicó estos regalos sencillos y alimentó a la multitud hambrienta (Juan 6, 1-14). Cuando
algunos Griegos (es decir no Judíos) se le acercaron a Andrés y le dijeron: ‘Señor, quisiéramos ver a Jesús’”, él los
llevó al Señor (Juan 12, 20-22). La tradición nos dice que San Andrés predicó el Evangelio en Rumania, Ucrania, Chipre y Georgia (¡el país, no el estado!). Debido a esto, él está muy bien considerado por las Iglesias Ortodoxas Orientales de esas áreas. Andrés se encuentra con Cristo y lleva a otros a Cristo. Esto es lo que “Ite, missa est” significa.
Así como San Andrés y todos los apóstoles, también nosotros somos enviados a compartir el Evangelio de Jesucristo.
Con el permiso cortés del Arzobispo Wenski, transferiremos la fiesta de San Andrés, el Apóstol, del 30 de
noviembre para el domingo 16 de noviembre. Ese fin de semana será una oportunidad especial para nosotros como
parroquia para reflexionar sobre el ejemplo de San Andrés quien condujo a otros a Cristo. Espero que también sea
una oportunidad para que cada uno de nosotros le pidamos al Espíritu Santo que nos permita compartir con ansias el
Evangelio con los demás, especialmente con aquellos que han crecido tibios en su práctica de la fe Católica. Esto es
lo que los Papas, comenzando por el Papa San Juan Pablo II, han llamado a la nueva evangelización.
Como una expresión de nuestro amor a la Misa, también adoramos a nuestro Señor presente en el Santísimo
Sacramento. Este acto de adoración siempre debe profundizar nuestro amor por la liturgia Eucarística (la Misa) y avivar nuestra participación en la Misa. El Domingo 23 de noviembre a partir de las 3:00pm tendremos nuestra Procesión
Eucarística anual. Adoramos al Señor en la Misa y damos testimonio público de nuestra fe por la procesión eucarística. Por favor haga planes para unirse a nosotros y para traer un invitado.

As this 40 Days for Life campaign comes to an end, we
have reports of 546 babies saved from abortion – that we
know of! And keep in mind that these aren’t just numbers.
That’s 546 individual human beings … and their moms …
and their dads … and grandparents, brothers, sisters,
aunts, uncles, cousins. Each time a mother says “yes” to
life, the impact is profound. God worked through so many
faithful people during this campaign and that work goes on
far beyond Day 40.
PRAYER
Father, we praise you. We have heard the voice of your Son,
and therefore we can make our voices heard.
We have done battle with the power of evil,
and therefore we can have compassion on those still within its grip.

Gospel reading John 2:13-22 [To be read aloud]
Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and
doves, as well as the moneychangers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the
sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the moneychangers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, “Take
these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your
house will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered and
said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for
forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his Body. Therefore, when he was
raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had
spoken.
Brief commentary:
This Sunday, which coincides with November 9th’s feast of the dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, we rejoice with the universal Church united with the successor of Saint Peter. The origins of this feast lie in the first centuries of the Christian era, as Christianity
– after three centuries of being a marginalized and often times illegal and persecuted faith – was first recognized as a legitimate religion
by Roman emperor Constantine the Great. The emperor donated to the church at Rome the palace of the Laterani family as a marvelous cathedral named Most Holy Savior and later renamed as Saint John the Baptist. Saint John of Lateran became for centuries the
official cathedral and home base of the bishop of Rome, the pope. From its ‘catedra’ (seat) the pope would conduct official mission of
the papacy. Today Saint John of Lateran basilica, after several reconstructions throughout its history, endures as one of four great basilicas of Rome. And today, as through the centuries, this ancient church is a symbol of the worldwide institutional Church, gathered
around the successor of Saint Peter and the bishops. All of the readings today attest to the dignity of the Church as the Temple of the
Lord, which is also the Body of Christ living and acting the world. In exile Jews mourned the loss of their life in beloved Zion and the
destruction of their Temple to Yahweh, yearned for deliverance and restoration in their Promised Land. Ezekiel gives voice to this
desire in the mystic vision of an ideal Temple as a sacramental center from which the grace of God flows to all, offering healing, new
life and fruitfulness – a true paradise. The psalmist too sings the praises of the city of God, which is more than one made by human
hands, but a people built as an earthly dwelling of the divine: “God is in its midst; it shall not be disturbed.” Paul reminds his community in Corinth that they are “God’s building” and the holy “Temple of the Holy Spirit” that must be honored; and Christians are to
have no other foundation for their lives as God’s building than Jesus Christ, the cornerstone and the foundation of the entire living
edifice. At the Temple in Jerusalem Jesus becomes indignant at the corruption he finds, and filled with prophetic ‘consuming zeal’
overturns the money-changers’ tables, calling for a restoration of the meaning of the Temple as a house of prayer for all nations. At
the same time he declares that the Temple itself is not an end in itself, but points to an even greater reality that transcends it: God has
come to dwell among us in him, the living and eternal Temple of the Father. Though the Temple of Jerusalem would be destroyed by
the Romans decades later, the temple of Jesus’ body, though destroyed would be raised again. Today as always, Christians are to understand their new life in Christ as one filled by the grace of God’s presence, they are to live serving each other as members of a body
do, and are to be the presence and mission of Jesus Christ extended throughout all the world. They are to be different: with the help
and power of the Spirit we are to think, love, live, and treat others, like Christ.
Today’s reading offers significant messages:
• The feast of the dedication of the basilica of Saint John Lateran connect the Church today to its origins as a world church, but also
as an institution and organization, different from all others: a living organism, a body, the Body of Christ.
• The theme of city, temple and dwelling are reworked in both Testaments to represent the People of God. In the life of Jesus, this
dwelling (incarnation) of God among the human race takes on a historic and irreversible reality.
• Christians are to live conscious that they are not just part of the world at large, but are truly a new creation, the People and building
of God, the Body of Christ, and the Temple of the Holy Spirit. As such they are to live as God’s own ambassadors in the
world, witnessing to God’s love, and being agents of God’s love, far beyond the world’s ways of thinking and living.

Lectura del santo Evangelio según San Juan 2:13-22
Se acercaba la Pascua de los judíos y Jesús subió a Jerusalén. Y encontró en el Templo a los vendedores de bueyes, ovejas y palomas, y
a los cambistas en sus puestos. Haciendo un látigo con cuerdas, echó a todos fuera del Templo, con las ovejas y los bueyes; desparramó el dinero de los cambistas y les volcó las mesas; y dijo a los que vendían palomas: “Quitad esto de aquí. No hagáis de la Casa de
mi Padre una casa de mercado.” Sus discípulos se acordaron de que estaba escrito: “El celo por tu Casa me devorará.” Los judíos entonces le replicaron diciéndole: “Qué señal nos muestras para obrar así?” Jesús les respondió: “Destruid este Santuario y en tres días lo
levantaré.” Los judíos le contestaron: “Cuarenta y seis años se han tardado en construir este Santuario, ¿y tú lo vas a levantar en tres
días?” Pero él hablaba del Santuario de su cuerpo. Cuando resucitó, pues, de entre los muertos, se acordaron sus discípulos de que
había dicho eso, y creyeron en la Escritura y en las palabras que había dicho Jesús.
Comentario breve:
Este Domingo, que coincide con la fiesta en noveno día de Noviembre de la dedicación de la basílica Laterana en Roma, nos regocijamos con la Iglesia universal unida al sucesor de San Pedro. Los origines de esta fiesta se encuentran en los primeros siglos de la era
cristiana, cuando el Cristianismo – después de tres siglos de marginalización y declarada fe ilícita y perseguida – fue primeramente reconocida como religión legal por el emperador romano Constantino Magno. El emperador dono a la iglesia en Roma el palacio de la
familia Laterani como una catedral maravillosa nombrada El Mas Santo Salvador (San Salvador) y fue renombrada después como San
Juan Bautista. San Juan de Letrán se uso por siglos como la catedral oficial y casa del obispo de Roma, el Papa. Desde su cátedra’ (silla)
el papa condujo su misión oficial del papado. Hoy la basílica de San Juan de Letrán, después de varias reconstrucciones a lo largo de la
historia, perdura como una de las cuatro gran basílicas de Roma. Y hoy, tal como por los siglos, esta antigua iglesia es símbolo de la
institución mundial que es la Iglesia, reunida alrededor del sucesor de San Pedro y los obispos. Todas las lecturas de hoy atestiguan a la
dignidad de la Iglesia como el templo del Señor, que es también el Cuerpo de Cristo viviendo y actuando en el mundo. En el exilio los
judíos lamentaron la perdida su amada Sion y la destrucción del templo a Javeh, añorando por libertad y restauración en su tierra prometida. Ezequiel da voz a este deseo en una visión mística de un templo ideal como un centro sacramental del cual brota la gracia de
Dios, ofreciendo sanación, nueva vida y fructificad – un verdadero paraíso. El salmista también canta las alabanzas de la ciudad de
Dios, que es mas la hechas por manos humanas, sino un pueblo edificado como la morada terrenal de la divinidad: “Dios habita entre
ella; no será estorbada.” Pablo le recuerda a su comunidad en Corintio de que son “la edificación de Dios” y el santo “templo del
Espíritu Santo” que tiene que ser honrado; y que los cristianos no han de tener otra fundación para sus vidas como edificación de Dios
que Jesucristo, la piedra angular y la fundación de todo el edificación viva. En el templo de Jerusalén Jesús se indigna con la corrupción
que encuentra, y lleno con profético ‘cello devorante’ vuelca las mesas de los cambistas, llamando por una restauración del significado
del Templo como casa de oración para todas las naciones. Al mismo tiempo declaro que el Templo no es un fin de mismo, sino señala
a una realidad mayor que lo transciende: Dios ha venido a morar entre nosotros en el, el vivo y eterno templo del Padre celestial. Aunque el Templo de Jerusalén fuese destruido por los romanos décadas después, el templo del cuerpo de Jesús, aunque destruido será
revivido. Hoy como siempre, los cristianos han de comprender sus nuevas vidas en Cristo como una llena de la gracia de la presencia
de Dios, han de vivir en servicio mutuo como miembros de un cuerpo, y han de ser la presencia y misión de Jesucristo extendida a
través del la tierra. Han de ser diferentes: con la ayuda y el poder del Espíritu hemos de pensar, amar, vivir, y tratar al prójimo, como lo
hace Cristo.
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes:
• La fiesta de la dedicación de la basílica de San Juan de Letrán conecta la Iglesia de hoy con sus orígenes como Iglesia mundial, pero
como una institución y organización diferente a todas otras: un organismo, un cuerpo, y el Cuerpo de Cristo.
• El tema de la ciudad, templo y morada son reconstruidos en ambos Testamentos para representar el Pueblo de Dios. En la vida de
Jesús, esta morada (encarnación) de Dios entre los seres humanos toma una realidad histórica y irreversible.
• Los cristianos han de vivir consientes de que no solamente son parte del mundo, sino de veras son una nueva creación, el Pueblo y
edificación de Dios, el Cuerpo de Cristo, y el Templo del Espíritu Santo. Tal así han de vivir como los embajadores de Dios
en el mundo, testimoniando al amor de Dios, y siendo agentes del amor de Dios, mucho mas halla de las maneras de pensar y
vivir del mundo.

Después de una pausa breve para reflexionar en silencio, comparta con otros sus ideas o sentimientos.
• ¿Cómo pienso en la Iglesia y mi parte en su vida?
• ¿Cómo puede el amor al santuario y a la Eucaristía llevarme al amor hacia el pobre, el que sufre y al necesitado en quien Cristo
habita?
• ¿Qué puedo hacer para participar y contribuir mas vigorosamente a la misión de la Iglesia en el mundo? ¿Cómo puedo vivir mas
como miembro del Cuerpo de Cristo, como sacramento de la presencia, amor y sanación de Jesucristo para el mundo?

Caring for God’s Temples
Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit built on the
firm foundation of Jesus Christ. St. Paul urges us, “…each
one must be careful how he builds upon it…”
We build carefully by taking care of ourselves and
choosing carefully what we allow into our bodies through our
ears, eyes, nose, mouth, and limbs. St. Paul reminds us that
we also need to take care of others. “If anyone destroys
God’s temple, God will destroy that person…”
Since 1969 the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops
through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development
(CCHD), has sought to build up the people of God by empowering them to challenge unjust structures that create poverty. People Acting for Community Together, a CCHDfunded group in Miami, works to break the school-to-prison
pipeline by reducing out-of-school suspensions for minor
disciplinary infractions. Education is an effective means of
ensuring that people can care for their temples of the Holy
Spirit.

THE TEMPLE AND WORSHIP
In all of today’s readings, the temple is prominently mentioned. Ezekiel speaks of streams of living water flowing out from
the temple, watering the desert, bringing life to all living things,
offering fresh healing to God’s people.
Paul reminds the Corinthians that their faith rests upon the
firmest of foundations, Christ himself. More than that, Paul reveals that those who follow Christ are themselves temples, temples of the Holy Spirit; that is, God dwells not only with them, but
in them.
For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the temple had come to be
identified with the presence of God and the only place where
authentic worship of God took place. Jesus had a different perception. Jesus identified himself not with the temple, but as the
temple. In so doing, Jesus indicated a dramatic shift in what it
means to worship God, to be in God’s presence. No longer was
a place to be the focus of prayer. Instead, a person, the person
of Jesus Christ, becomes the center of our worship.

EL TEMPLO Y LA ADORACIÓN
En todas las lecturas de hoy, el Templo es mencionado
predominantemente. Ezequiel habla de aguas vivas que fluyen
del Templo, regando el desierto, trayendo vida a todas las cosas
vivientes, brindando salud y frescor al pueblo de Dios.
Pablo recuerda a los corintios que su fe reposa sobre bases
firmes, Cristo mismo. Más que eso, Pablo les revela que quienes siguen a Cristo son templos ellos mismos, templos del Espíritu Santo, es decir, que Dios no solamente habita con ellos,
sino dentro de ellos.
Para los judíos de los tiempos de Jesús, el Templo era
identificado con la presencia de Dios y como el lugar santo en
donde la verdadera adoración a Dios tenía lugar. Jesús tenía
una percepción diferente. Jesús se identifica a sí mismo no con
el Templo, sino como el templo. Al hacerlo, Jesús mostró un
cambio dramático en lo que significa adorar a Dios, estar en la
presencia de Dios. Ya no sería un sitio el centro de oración.
Ahora una persona, la persona de Jesucristo, viene a ser el
centro de nuestra adoración.

All items may be brought to the Outreach/
Parish Office. Thank you for your generous donations.
For those in need of a Thanksgiving basket,
