St. ANDREW CHURCH, OLD PASADENA “Not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the LORD.” -Deuteronomy 8:3b A GLANCE AT OUR PAST Father Cornelius Scannell, the second pastor of our parish, was described by Monsignor James Hourihan in his 1986 “The History of St. Andrew’s Church” as well-versed in theology and history and a “tireless seeker of souls.” In his brief tenure at St. Andrew (1890-96), Father Scannell identified and addressed two looming issues: The need to relocate the church to a more central location, one that could also accommodate the shifting and growing Catholic population in the area, and the challenge of providing the youth of the parish with at least some semblance of a religious education. –Part A ANNOUNCEMENTS ♦ This Saturday & Sunday, June 25 & 26, Second Collection at all Masses, Peter’s Pence Collection for the Holy Father. ♦ Monday, July 4, 9:00 a.m. Mass only; no 8:15 a.m. Mass. ♦ Monday, July 4, Pastoral Center closed, Independence Day. ♦ Monday, July 4, Independence Day, no 5:30 p.m. Spanish Mass. ♦ Sunday, July 31, Expectant Mother’s Blessing, 12:30 p.m. Mass. ♦ Friday & Saturday, August 5 & 6, Youth Rally at Saint Andrew Church. ♦ Saturday, August 6, Youth Rally Mass, 10:00 a.m., with Bishop Gabino Zavala. On June 29, the Feasts of Saints Peter and Paul, Archbishop Gómez will receive the Pallium from Pope Benedict XVI. The Pallium is a woolen vestment conferred by the Pope on an Archbishop. It consists of a narrow, circular band placed around the shoulders with short lappets hanging from front and back. Pope Benedict XVI spoke of its significance by saying, ”What the Pallium indicates first and foremost is that we are all carried by Christ. …But at the same time it invites us to carry one another.” Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. DID YOU KNOW? FIVE TIPS FOR SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN The Archdiocese mandates that all people who work with children and youth in our parishes and schools must undergo child abuse prevention training through the VIRTUS program. The training details five steps to prevent child sexual abuse: 1. Know the warning signs of an inappropriate relationship with a child. 2. Control access to children by carefully selecting the adults who work with children and youth. 3. Monitor all programs for the safety of children and youth. 4. Each year the theme addresses a different life issue. This year the theme was, “I Show Respect for Life by My Service to Others”. The students were asked to write about the importance of providing service to others and to describe their own personal volunteering experiences as well as the group service projects in which they have participated. The students wrote outstanding essays and amazed the judges with their descriptions of the wide variety of volunteer services they have provided! Even though only a few essays could receive the top awards, all those who participated were also winners!
