31st October 2014
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends,
Principal
Last Friday evening, 24 October, we held our annual awards presentation evening, St Monica’s
Live!
Last Wednesday, 29 October, we held our Annual General Meeting of our College Board. Both
of the gatherings require me to reflect on our achievements of the year. In my Principal’s
Address and in The Chair of the Board, Tom O’Donnell’s AGM Report, we acknowledged the
following achievements.
Visibly our College has changed significantly, with the completion of Stage 2 of our Master
building plan and with the refurbishment of the undercover area. The College has been
transformed with our new buildings, new gardens and refreshed spaces.
Academically we continue to excel, particularly with our Year 12 results. We have maintained
measurable improvements for four years straight. The following table clarifies the
improvement since 2012:
2012
2013
5 OP 1’s
2 OP 1’s , 6 OP 2’s
20% students achieved an OP 1-5
22% students achieved an OP 1-5
45% students achieved an OP 1-10
53% students achieved an OP 1-10
75% students achieved an OP 1-15
80% students achieved an OP 1-15
This year there has been a tremendous number of successful teams and individuals. When we typed up the list of extracurricular activities in which we have participated - the list exceeded 7 A4 pages. Our newsletter is always full of our girls’
successes in extra-curricular activities. Our wins are across a diverse range of activities: Titration competition, Junior and
Senior Debating, Rostrum Voice of Youth, Calanna Junior Speaking, Language Speaking Competition for Italian and Japanese,
overseas bursary, university scholarships, Eisteddfods, Business Studies competition. The pinnacle of our extra-curricular
participation was the Mod Musical – Downtown. Downtown showcased the Performing Arts talents of our students – our
singers, dancers, actors and musicians. The production was highly polished and worthy of the overwhelmingly positive
response from our College community.
Our Sporting successes will be fully acclaimed at our Sport Awards evening on Friday 31 October – this evening.
The most significant achievements have not been visible to students and parents. Invisibly, behind the scenes, our teachers
have been writing new Australian Curriculum programs for Year 7-10 for 2015 over 12 subjects and our RE teachers have
been writing new RE programs for Year 7-12. All of this has been happening on top of the normal yet quality teaching and
learning practices at St Monica’s College. Our Middle Managers have also endured the arduous task of recruitment for the
Middle Leaders re-structure– over 15 positions within the school. Our non-teaching administrative staff have implemented
a System Shared suite of software, this has occurred across all administrative aspects of their work – finance, timetables,
rolls, student data, reporting, mark books, etc. So, the staff of St Monica’s College has worked doubly hard in 2014, plus the
preparation for an additional 110 students in 2015. I am enormously proud of my dedicated and hardworking staff. Their
stoicism and professionalism, inspires me and makes St Monica’s what it is today. I am privileged to call them my colleagues.
It is most appropriate to celebrate World Teacher Day today! We thank our Teachers with all of our hearts!
God bless,
Kristen Sharpe

Catholic Mission Month
The theme of this year’s Catholic Mission Month is: When I Grow Up… I Want to be Alive.
The focus of World Mission Month for 2014 is the Church’s outreach in the dangerous ghetto areas in the city of Kingston,
Jamaica. This week the girls have supported Catholic Mission through two activities. Our crazy sock day and parade- sock it
to poverty and the traditional ‘Coin Line Challenge’.

Curriculum
Year 12 Exam block
Students in Year 12 commence their final exams on Tuesday 11th November and go through with these until their
completion on Tuesday 18th November. Staff members wish them well and encourage a continued demonstration of
the excellence of efforts and skills that we have seen throughout the year. The Year 12 exams will be held in the new
stage of the Agnes Building – most will be conducted on the top floor in Rooms 308-310. It is important if students are
ill and so unable to attend any examination that parents telephone the Office on the morning of the exam and then
bring in a Medical Certificate to Ms Provan as soon as possible.
Students have already been given the exam block schedule and it is also on the College website.
The usual procedures for the examination block apply to all students:
•
Punctuality and attendance at all relevant exams in full school uniform
•
If attending the library between exams, full school uniform and quiet individual study
•
Quiet and exemplary behavior before, during and after exams as students in other year levels also have exams
and assignments in their class times.
• In the case of absence due to illness, a telephone call early in the day of the examination and a Medical Certificate
as soon as possible
It is a Qld Curriculum and Assessment Authority requirement that all students who wish to receive a Student
Education Profile, including Tertiary Entrance Statement, MUST BE IN ATTENDANCE AT THE COLLEGE ON FRIDAY 21st
NOV. A roll will be taken on this day in order to meet these requirements and each student will be required to sign
alongside her name in the Attendance Register. Ms Casey will have this Attendance Register at the Year 12 Meeting on
Friday 21st November.
Request for return of materials in Term 2, 2015: Year 12 work has to be retained by the college until early in Term
2 of 2015. After this time, assignment material completed by students during Years 11 and 12 is able to be returned
to students. Any student who would like to request her assignment work in particular subjects is asked to leave her
name and telephone number with the office staff before the end of this academic year.
Years 8-11 exams
Students in Years 8 to 11 will begin end-of-year exams on Thursday 20th October and these will conclude on Friday 28th
November.
Subjects for 2015
In Weeks Five and Six, students of Years 9, 10 and 11 of 2015 will be given their subject allocations for next year.
St Monica’s College Live
Thank-you to Ms Innes and all other staff who organised the celebration of the Academic and Pastoral successes of
the many talented students at St Monica’s Live last Friday night. It was pleasing to see so many parents and students
able to celebrate student achievements over the year while being entertained by the Music, Dance and Singing items
from students.

Congratulations to the following Year 11s who have been elected to leadership positions for 2015 –
Social Justice Captain – Madeline Healy
Community Captain – Nicola Howell
Cultural Captain – Sarah Hooton
House Captains
McAuley – Tahlia Smith
MacKillop – Jennifer Hoskins
Masterson – Shakira Fagan
Morrissey – Grace-Kelly Davidson
Performing Arts Captains – Mia Ferrero, Alexandra Laycock, Evelyn McGuinness and Shareen Fairley.
Pastoral Care
College Captains – Stephanie Geck & Sophie Posar
The process for selecting College Captains involved students wishing to take on a leadership position
applying in writing to the Principal followed by the Year 11s electing their preferred candidates. There were
so many highly capable students who could have fulfilled the requirements of any of the captains’ roles that
it was disappointing to see them miss out. Nonetheless, I am confident that they will use their talents to
support their elected leaders and make a very positive contribution to the College in 2015.

Home Economics
Year 10 have been cooking up a storm in Home Economics this
week. Some delicious dishes were created. Well done girls!
Carole Lane
Home Economics Coordinator
The busy-ness of the residence continues. Last weekend the girls who were in the residence
for the free weekend went to camp at Genazano. We had perfect weather which allowed us
to enjoy plenty of activities in the water and relax away from the boarding routine. The only
difference to the usual camping trip was the presence of bandicoots which spent the night going
in and out of the tents and causing concern for some of the girls. On the Monday of the pupil free day
the girls had some study time and then had the choice of a shopping expedition or a swim at the Esplanade. Both
were a popular way to spend the
afternoon.
Some of the girls have been
to Brisbane this past week
for sporting events and we
congratulate Eliza Markham and
Hope Gibuma on their selection.
This weekend the girls went to
Boarding
During the week the Year 12
boarders and I had dinner
together in my unit. It was a
relaxed, happy evening which
concluded with the girls playing
cards. It was a very special time
being the last time we will dine
as a group in the residence.
Nandroya Falls for their outing. Though the water was
cold the girls enjoyed the time they spent swimming
under the actual falls.
I have advised the weekly boarders that they will need
to take all their possessions home for the coming
holidays. Some girls have accumulated a huge amount
of possessions bringing some back each week which is
causing chaos in the storeroom.

St Monica’s Sandwich Drive
The St Monica’s College community has a strong focus of social justice and supports a plethora of initiatives throughout the
year. One of the organisations that St Monica’s supports is Rosies Friends on the Street Outreach. Rosies is an organisation
that supports the marginalised in society by providing meals and friendship.
In July, the supply of sandwiches, ordinarily donated to Rosies, dropped significantly and so they put out a call to the
community for support. In response to this call, the staff of St Monica’s College jumped at the opportunity and initiated
a sandwich drive. Since August, many of the staff members contribute in various ways to this cause, donating bread and
fillings and/or giving their time on Friday mornings to make an assortment of sandwiches. As a result, around ten to fifteen
loaves are made every week which is extremely appreciated by Rosies and especially by those who receive the sandwiches.
Spokesperson for the sandwich drive Ms Sonya Helms commented “Every week I am overwhelmed by the generosity and
enthusiasm of our staff, not only by donating food items, but also turning up each Friday at 7.30am in such great spirit.” This
simple motion of the staff of St Monica’s positively impacts the local community and aids those may not have a regular home
or income, strongly demonstrating the importance and benefits of social justice in the community.

Thank you for your cooperation.
- The Library Ladies
In all regards 2014 has been a year of huge success. Thus, it is with great sadness that
I sit to write my final newsletter article as College Captain and member of the Student
Representative Council. Indeed, I feel as though I have blinked and the year has passed, but
within this seemingly short time frame, we have all achieved so much.
Student Rep
Library
It would be much appreciated if all students could return their
books by the due date, as we often have several students looking forward
to reading the same book. Students may speak to library staff about book renewal options. With the end of the school year fast approaching, students are reminded to
return their textbooks to the library as soon as advised by their teachers.
Last Friday evening we, as a college community recognised and celebrated the academic and spiritual achievements
of numerous girls with the annual SMC Live. It was an enjoyable and entertaining evening with many music
ensembles and an amazing dance troupe which truly showcased the performing talents of St Monica’s students. A
wonderful night was had by all and we sincerely thank the members of staff who dedicated much of their time to
making the evening so memorable, it does not go unnoticed.
As the Year 12 cohort prepare for their final exams and Graduation celebrations, there are mixed emotions within
the locker room. While there is much sadness to be leaving such a wonderful community, there is also thankfulness
for the opportunities it has provided, excitement for what lies ahead and nervousness about entering the unknown.
Yet as we embark on our continuing journey, we are certain about one thing- St Monica’s has taught us lessons and
we have formed friendships which we will have for life and for this we are eternally grateful.
With that said, we are aware that the current Year 11’s soon to be the Year 12’s of 2015 have had a busy past few
weeks preparing for their leadership responsibilities. We wish them all the best for their future roles and trust that
they will have a fulfilling and rewarding final year just as we, the current Year 12 cohort have.
To conclude, I would like to leave you with the wise words of Henry Haskins…
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us”
This is certainly something that St Monica’s has taught me…thank you I have loved every minute of it.
God Bless,
Bridget Kenny

Year 9
On 18th October, the combined Year 9 Imagine teams concluded one
of our major projects, the YAPS (Young Animals Protection Society)
collection. We attended the YAPS shelter in Smithfield to donate the boxes
of pet food, toys, leashes and the like, that we, along with the St Monica’s
school community collected. We organized this project because we felt
it was important to think of everyone, not only humans but animals too,
who were in need of our help. It was an amazing feeling to be there when
we handed over our collection, because we were able to see how deeply
appreciated our efforts were, and how great the need for these vital
resources was. We were then given a tour of the YAPS precinct, where we
were able to interact with the animals and to see who our hard work was
affecting – and believe me when I say it was well and truly worth it!

Thank you for the generosity shown with our YAPS collection. Any further donations of pet food, leads, toys, bedding,
cleaning products, etc. will be gratefully accepted. They can be handed in to the office and I am happy to deliver them as
they come in.
Also, on the 21st October Team 2
comprising of Teah Argent, Ashley Storer,
Evie O’Reilly and Eva Bluett made cupcakes
to distribute amongst the boarding
students at St Monica’s. This small gesture
was one of the additional initiatives, which
again, allowed the girls to experience that
it truly is in giving that we receive.
Stand by for other acts of ‘Giving’ coming
to St Monica’s soon!

Breakfast with the Law
Legal Studies
On Thursday 16th October, Legal Studies students in Years
10 and 12 at St Monica’s College were given the opportunity
to discuss contemporary legal issues with Professor Anthony
Gray. A lecturer at the University of Southern Queensland and
with an array of publications to his name, Prof. Gray, spoke
to the students about matters such as Queensland’s AntiAssociation laws, Preventative Detention and the possibility of
a Bill of Rights in Australia. Prof. Gray provided the girls with
an insightful look into both the positives and negatives of each
situation, as well as giving key information and challenging
students to evaluate each law and give their own opinions.
An educational program within a relaxed and comfortable
environment, the session was certainly enjoyable and helpful to
the aspiring lawyers of St. Monica’s.
The following morning saw the Year 12 students attend the “Breakfast with the Law” at the Rydges Tradewinds Hotel.
Again, astute analysis of legal issues, an insight into a day in the life of a Family Law lawyer, networking opportunities
as well as a sumptuous breakfast were enjoyed by all.
St Monica’s College Legal Studies Bursary and Essay Competition Success
A number of Legal Studies students took part in both the Essay Writing Competition and Bursary Applications
sponsored by the Business Liaison Association and Marino Moller Lawyers this year.
I congratulate all the students for their participation in these activities. In particular congratulations to the following
