Dear Parishioners:
All week I have been hearing from folks about the mutual requests for prayers from each other that we did
at three of last week’s Masses. I have been very moved by it all and I wish I had the time to share some of
the stories of connections made. In line with this sense that we do not go to God alone – I share with you this
excerpt from Pope Francis’ Evangelii Gaudium:
Today, when the networks and means of human communication have made unprecedented advances,
we sense the challenge of finding and sharing a “mystique” of living together, of mingling and encounter,
of embracing and supporting one another, of stepping into this flood tide which, while chaotic, can
become a genuine experience of fraternity, a caravan of solidarity, a sacred pilgrimage. Greater
possibilities for communication thus turn into greater possibilities for encounter and solidarity for
everyone. If we were able to take this route, it would be so good, so soothing, so liberating and hopefilled! To go out of ourselves and to join others is healthy for us. To be self-enclosed is to taste the bitter
poison of immanence, and humanity will be worse for every selfish choice we make.
The Christian ideal will always be a summons to overcome suspicion, habitual mistrust, fear of losing
our privacy, all the defensive attitudes which today’s world imposes on us. Many try to escape from
others and take refuge in the comfort of their privacy or in a small circle of close friends, renouncing the
realism of the social aspect of the Gospel. For just as some people want a purely spiritual Christ, without
flesh and without the cross, they also want their interpersonal relationships provided by sophisticated
equipment, by screens and systems which can be turned on and off on command. Meanwhile, the Gospel
tells us constantly to run the risk of a face-to-face encounter with others, with their physical presence
which challenges us, with their pain and their pleas, with their joy which infects us in our close and
continuous interaction. True faith in the incarnate Son of God is inseparable from self-giving, from
membership in the community, from service, from reconciliation with others. The Son of God, by becoming flesh, summoned us to the revolution of tenderness. . .
One important challenge is to show that the solution will never be found in fleeing from a personal
and committed relationship with God which at the same time commits us to serving others. This
happens frequently nowadays, as believers seek to hide or keep apart from others, or quietly flit from
one place to another or from one task to another, without creating deep and stable bonds. “Imaginatio
locorum et mutatio multos fefellit.” This is a false remedy which cripples the heart and at times the body
as well. We need to help others to realize that the only way is to learn how to encounter others with the
right attitude, which is to accept and esteem them as companions along the way, without interior
resistance. Better yet, it means learning to find Jesus in the faces of others, in their voices, in their pleas.
And learning to suffer in the embrace of the crucified Jesus whenever we are unjustly attacked or meet
with ingratitude, never tiring of our decision to live in fraternity.
There indeed we find true healing, since the way to relate to others which truly heals instead of
debilitating us, is a mystical fraternity, a contemplative fraternity. It is a fraternal love capable of seeing
the sacred grandeur of our neighbour, of finding God in every human being, of tolerating the nuisances
of life in common by clinging to the love of God, of opening the heart to divine love and seeking the
happiness of others just as their heavenly Father does.

Reflections, Notices, Events
MONDAYS AT THE MOVIES
Starting June 9th
For Mondays during the summer, we will be showing
movies every Monday—in the mornings, after the 9:00
Mass and in the evenings at 7:00. Both showings will be
held in the Youth Ministry Room (Fireside Lounge). All
are invited. Some movies will be especially noted as for
the entire family. Some would be more adult-oriented.
We will print the entire lineup next weekend. All of the
movies are meant to nurture the souls—some are old
classics and others are more recent. You are welcome
to bring refreshments (non alcoholic!)
Monday, June 9th: Lilies of the Field. A movie for all
members of the family.

Middle School Faith Formation Registration
St. Monica Middle School Faith Formation Program
offers religious instruction for children in grades
6th—8th. Classes meet once a week
at the following time:
Wednesday 6:30—8:00 p.m.
Registration forms have been emailed to families
registered in the Faith Formation program this past
year, and can also be found online and in the church.
Children are placed in classes on a first come, first
serve basis, so please register early to ensure the best
day and time for your child.
Middle School Faith Formation Classes begin:
Wednesday Sept. 24, 2014
Grades K-5 Faith Formation Registration
St. Monica Elementary Faith Formation Program offers
religious instruction for children in grades K—5th.
Classes meet once a week for one hour
at the following times:
Tuesdays 3:30—4:30 p.m.
Wednesdays 2:15—3:15 p.m.
Wednesdays 3:45—4:45 p.m.
Registration forms have been e-mailed to families who
were registered in the Faith Formation program this
past year. Additional forms are available online at

and in the rectory office. Children are placed in

child. Children must be enrolled in a faith formation
program for at least one year before beginning the
preparation process for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.

High School Confirmation Program
The Saint Monica Confirmation program is a two year
process with a weekly meeting commitment.
We encourage 9th graders registered in the parish
to begin this process next fall; however, ALL
high school youth are welcome to begin.
Classes meet once a week
for both 1st year and 2nd year students
Mondays 7:00—8:30 p.m.
Registration forms have been sent out via email to all
registered high school youth. Additional registration
forms are available online at
www.stmonicamoraga.com, in both church entrances,
and in the Parish Center and Rectory offices.
There is a mandatory Parent Meeting on
Monday, September 8th
(7:00—8:30 p.m. in the Youth Center)
then classes for the youth begin September 22nd.

St. Monica’s 50th Anniversary is coming up in 2015!
In honor of our first 50 years together as a parish, we are planning a
variety of celebrations and gifts. We would love for you to be involved
in any areas that interest you; please see below for some of our plans.
Mass with Bishop Barber: A fiftieth anniversary Mass celebration
will be held in May 2015 to commemorate the official beginning of St.
Monica Parish. We will be inviting the Bishop as well as all Priests who
have served us as a parish to help with our celebration. We will need
help with the decoration of the church, Eucharistic Ministers, etc.
There will be a luncheon following the Mass; we will need help providing food, serving, and cleanup
following the Mass.
Parish Directory: Parishioner at the Town Hall Meeting on April 27th approved the idea of a 50th
Anniversary St. Monica Parish Directory. This hard copy book will have information and photos
about the history of St. Monica over the past 50 years, and professional photos of all parishioners
with “family name only” labels. Making a parish directory involves using a photography company
like LifeTouch with publishing experience, so special photo days will be held (probably at St. Monica
Peace Center), where professional photos will be taken for the directory. With LifeTouch there is no
sitting fee, and each parishioner/family receives a free 8x10 print. Parishioners will also have the
opportunity to schedule their session online. Volunteers will be needed in 2-3 hour shifts to man
tables during photo days, which should start in Fall 2014 to allow time for the book to be completed
by May 2015. Help is be needed to compile pictures and put the book together via LifeTouch’s
online system. Our goal is to provide a keepsake to St. Monica parishioners with 100%
participation in photo sessions, so all our members are included in the directory. Contact Pat Pagni

50th Anniversary Gala: We will hold a Gala Dinner celebration in Spring of 2015 at St. Mary’s
College Soda Center – date and time to be finalized. Nancy Migneault and Bill Ritthaler are chairpersons for this big event.

Gifts to our Church: A traditional part of any milestone parish anniversary involves giving gifts to
beautify and maintain Our Lord’s House. There have been several suggestions and ideas shared
before and during the Town Hall meeting on April 27th. Some of the gifts under consideration
include replacing the carpet, cladding the altar and ambo in marble, installing stone flooring around
the altar and sanctuary, hanging the crucifix in the center of the church, adding art or stained glass
to the church, creating cushions for the rest of the pews, and creating a permanent home for the
baptismal font. If you are interested in helping with any of these gifts, please feel free to contact

Baptisms
Next class is Monday,
June 9th at 7:30 pm.
The expectation of the Church for the parents who
present their child for Baptism includes the following:
· One of the parents must give evidence of practicing
the Catholic faith.
· They must be registered members of the parish (four
months) with exceptions made for grandchildren of
our parishioners as long as the parents of the child
present a letter from the pastor of their church
where they worship and they meet all St. Monica’s
baptismal requirements.
· The parents and godparents must attend a PreBaptismal Class either at St. Monica or their home
church.
Baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of the
month after the 11:00 Mass.
Pre-Baptismal Classes are scheduled
every other month at 7:30 pm.
