Perfect 72-pounder
RAINBOW Lake’s Perfect Common has been banked at
an impressive 72lb.
The immaculate fish fell to Dutch angler Dennis de
Wilde on day three of a week-long session at the
popular French venue.
Dennis, who banked a mid-twenty carp and a
1.45m-long sturgeon before the big common made an
appearance, presented snowman rigs made up of

A SUDDEN frost and high air
pressure made fishing
difficult at the Northern
Carp Cup final, but the
winning pair still managed
six fish.
Between them Darren
Wilcox and Jason Trout
secured half-a-dozen carp
for 95lb 13oz at Pool Bridge
Farm’s Q Lake in York.
Kelsey Dent and Bobbie
Horseman managed four
fish for 61lb 14oz and second
place, while a last-gasp
19-pounder for Daniel
Richmond and Scott Dowse
helped them claim third
with two fish for 32lb 5oz.

A 36-HOUR session at The

for 80lb to Paul Thomas.
The West Wales angler
took mirrors of 42lb and

The Fully is fooled
THIS beautiful scaly mirror gave Max Rippington a
new personal best.
The Oxfordshire 16-year-old tackled a local stillwater
to bank the 26lb 2oz mirror known as The Fully.
Max, who also banked commons of 21lb 6oz and
18lb 2oz, said: “It was my best-ever session and the
mirror was one of my target fish, so I was buzzing.”
The teenager used GS Crab boilies from Oxford Carp
Baits and rigs made from Carper’s Arsenal components.

Tom with his 28lb 5oz mirror.
TOM Lane scooped £100 in
cash as he banked the
biggest fish in the lake at a
Somerset fishery.
The Bridgwater angler
caught this 28lb 5oz mirror
at Summerhayes’ Perch Pit,
and owner Peter Wakeling
handed over the cash for
eclipsing the venue record.
The fish was stocked at
18lb in 2010 and was last
caught at 26lb 1oz in March
this year.
Tom has already set his
sets on netting another
£100 for catching the
venue’s first 30-pounder.

VERY lake has got a
‘rubbish’ swim. You
know the one I mean – a
bit unkempt, a bit
hemmed in.
Such swims are usually the last to
get chosen regardless of the weather
conditions, and for that very reason
they are always worth keeping an
eye on, especially if the lake is fairly
quiet after a busy few days.
My target venue, Baden Hall’s
Quarry Pool, can be tricky. The
quieter the lake is, the more likely
you are to catch one. Just like most
lakes, really. Twenty anglers
chucking leads, Spombs and marker
floats around doesn’t really get the
carp climbing up the banks, so I tend
to use my annual leave and head up
there during the week.
For this reason I found myself on
the lake on a Monday morning,
having a good look around before
choosing a swim. With fish showing
in a few different areas and 12
anglers leaving that day, I could
really take my pick.
With one other angler on for the
night, I pretty much had the lake to
myself, albeit conditions weren’t
ideal. There wasn’t a breath of wind
and it was unseasonably mild.
I decided to fish where I’d had a hit
of 12 fish a month ago. I could cover
so much water, and any anglers

turning up wouldn’t affect my
fishing. From here, I could keep an
eye on the whole lake and given that
it was quiet, I could move to another
area if need be.
I baited my own swim with quite a
decent hit of bait.
I figured the warm conditions

upper layers, so food could well be
on their mind when the air cooled
for the night.
I was just sitting having a brew
with head bailiff Roy Russell when a
fish crashed on the far side, quite
close to the bank. Another fish
showed, followed by an absolutely
colossal common carp.
“That’ll do for me,” I said. I wound
in my rods and headed around with
a bucket of boilies and PVA bags. The
idea was to watch the fish in the
edge, then just lower in a couple of
baits on their patrol route. Funnily
enough, they were in Baden’s least
fancied swim!
As I arrived in the area, I saw an
enormous common just yards from
the bank. I’ll be honest, I thought it
was the lake’s big girl, which hadn’t
long been out at 47lb! I followed her
line into the lake and just as she got
out of view, she rolled over, sending
up a plume of bubbles.
It was now time for my favourite
stalking set-up, a little PVA bag
containing three halved Code Red
boilies. To halve the baits, I used the

dispenser, which has a cutter built

into the top of it so you can chop

How easy is that? I had a shaved
Code Red bottom bait on my rig and
underarmed it to the spot. These
carp see so many round balls –
they’re definitely wary of standard
baits – so this presentation is
something a little less obvious.
The other rod went out to where
some fish were bulging the surface
film and fizzing a bit – there were a
few fish around!
I popped pebbles on the spools,
laid the rods on the deck and waited.
And I didn’t have to wait long! The
stone on the left-hand rod went
flying and the fish created a huge
wake as it departed from the
shallows into the lake. What a
powerful run!
I was convinced it was a decent fish
right away and had things under
control fairly quickly. Following the
initial run, the fish didn’t do much
other than kite left, and before long I
was standing in the lake in my
joggers with the net, nursing a heftylooking common towards the net.
Once again I was convinced it was
the big girl. I thought my quest for
her was over, but as the fish kissed
the spreader block I realised I’d got
one of the lake’s ‘other’ big
commons, only it looked absolutely
massive! It’s a dead ringer and
arguably even better looking – it
looked incredible in the net.
Right away I rang Roy, who was
down in no time to help with the
weighing and photography. Roy did
the honours. “Welcome to the forty
club,” he grinned. “She’s 40lb 5oz!”
A lot of man-hugging and backslapping later, I hoisted the fish up
for the cameras and she behaved
impeccably. What a fish and what a
lake! Baden just keeps producing
special carp.
Just as Roy drove off to attend to
matters up at the office, the other
rod flew off ! This was an altogether
different battle, the carp stripping
60 yards of line in no time.
Eventually it got snagged up and
I had to walk down the margins for
40 yards to free it from the other
side. Once free, the fish hardly did
anything and was soon in my
anxiously held net.
It was clearly another good ’un and
at 33lb, one of the lake’s lesser-

caught mirrors. Roy came down and
did the honours once more, before
heading home for the day.
I stayed till dark but didn’t see
another sign – I’d clearly spooked
them. But who was I to complain?
An awesome half-hour in the right
spot beat the rest of the trip I spent
elsewhere. Despite moving three
times in 48 hours I didn’t get another
chance. Maybe I should’ve stayed in
the ‘rubbish’ swim after all?
