PRE-JORDAN
The Baptismal-Parent-Preparation program instructs parents
that they are the “first teachers of their children.” To help parents fulfill their obligations a baptismal preparation evening is
provided on the
third Thursday of each month. Preregistration is required. Parents must attend this program
prior to the baptism of their child, or even before the baby
is born. Godparents are welcome to attend. For more information, or to schedule, please call St. Joseph Rectory at 215-6460494 or email. Baptisms in Spanish are by appointment.
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
The Sacrament of Baptism for children is celebrated on the
second Sunday of the month at 12:00 PM.
SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE – Parishioners who are
planning wedding dates must make an appointment to set a
wedding date six months prior to that wedding date and arrange
for Marriage Preparation Class at
www.philamarriageprep.com or call 610-873-2017.
GODPARENTS/SPONSORS
The role of baptismal sponsor is primarily a spiritual role to
help the newly baptized lead a Christian life. Therefore, a
sponsor must be a practicing Catholic, in good standing
(married validly), at least 16 years of age, and have received the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation
and Eucharist). A baptized person who belongs to a non
Catholic Church may be admitted as a witness to Baptism together with a Catholic sponsor. The choice of Godparents/
Sponsor should be made primarily on their spiritual basis.
SACRAMENT OF THE SICK
In case of serious illness, please contact the Pastor at the
Rectory. Eucharistic Ministers make Communion calls on a
regular monthly basis to the homebound.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
For several weeks, we have considered penance as a
sacrament of forgiveness, and yet there are two other
sacraments in this category. The first, of course, is the
Eucharist itself. The other is the sacrament of the sick,
long associated with penance.
The Letter of James sets out the deep tradition for
caring for the sick: sending for the priests, who will pray
and lay their hands on the sick ones, anointing them with
oil, and giving them forgiveness. Long before other rites
of penance developed, the sacrament of the sick was
therefore a profound experience of forgiveness. Jesus
often healed the sick, nearly always as a visible sign of
forgiveness of sin. The tradition didn’t unfold smoothly,
however, and within a few centuries the oil of the sick
was taken home to be applied by caregivers as a salve, or

Welcome Visitors with Hospitality
Many of our visiting families are traveling long
distances to reach the World Meeting of
Families – Philadelphia 2015. As an affordable
alternative to hotel accommodations and to
support the volume of people coming to the Philadelphia area, we are
offering families located in the Philadelphia region the opportunity to
open their doors to our visitors.
If you would like to open your home to a World Meeting of Families
Visitor, you can register at
https://worldmeeting2015.homestaymanager.com/host/signupt
:l
Host Families can host visitors in a spare bedroom, a vacated
apartment, or any amenable facility. Visiting individuals and families
can then search the Host Family database to find hosts to be matched
too. When registering as a Host Family, you will include information
on your hosting situation (bedrooms, family hobbies, pets, allergies,
access to public transportation, etc.). Additionally, each visiting
family will pay a nightly fee to the Host Family. The Host Family can
use that money to offset costs, buy breakfast each day, donate to the
visiting family, or in any other way desired. Your role, as a Host
Family, is pivotal in enabling many families to make this trip safe and
affordable. worldmeeting2015.org/get-involved/host-a-family/

Information for the Pastoral Planning- FAQ
How were areas chosen for study in Pastoral Planning?
All Parishes in the archdiocese will engage in pastoral
planning. The parishes in certain areas have been given
priority, however, because they face particular
challenges. These challenges can include dramatically
changing demographics, declining sacramental activity,
financial difficulties such as large debts and/or ongoing
operating deficits that are draining parish savings, a
density of parishes in a small area, and buildings in
disrepair. Situations vary but the hope is that by
working together parishes will be better able to
address these issues and be in a better position to
serve future generations.

Planning web page at http://archphila.org/conversion/

THE TEMPLE AND WORSHIP
In all of today’s readings, the temple is prominently
mentioned. Ezekiel speaks of streams of living water
flowing out from the temple, watering the desert,
bringing life to all living things, offering fresh healing
to God’s people.
Paul reminds the Corinthians that their faith rests
upon the firmest of foundations, Christ himself. More
than that, Paul reveals that those who follow Christ are
themselves temples, temples of the Holy Spirit; that is,
God dwells not only with them, but in them.
For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the temple had come
to be identified with the presence of God and the only
place where authentic worship of God took place. Jesus
had a different perception. Jesus identified himself not
with the temple, but as the temple. In so doing, Jesus
indicated a dramatic shift in what it means to worship
God, to be in God’s presence. No longer was a place to
be the focus of prayer. Instead, a person, the person of
Jesus Christ, becomes the center of our worship.
