Church, Concrete. We are two individual parishes and one mission church ministered to by our Pastor, Fr. Martin Bourke, with the
assistance of Parochial Vicar, Fr. Emilio Gonzalez. In addition to sharing clergy, the churches share Pastoral Assistant for Finance,
Jamie Cline ([email protected] or 360-391-7003). Fr. Martin and Jamie have their offices at the Immaculate Conception Parish
Center located at 215 N. 15th St. in Mount Vernon, Fr. Emilio’s office is at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish located at 719 Ferry St.,
Sedro-Woolley.

First Sunday of Lent

The waters of Baptism make us part of the new covenant in Christ. But the bishops’ pastoral letter on
stewardship reminds us that “there is a fundamental obligation arising from the Sacrament of Baptism…
that people place their gifts, their resources—their selves—at God’s service in and through the Church.”

Rebuttal
As a teacher at Immaculate Conception Regional School, I feel compelled to respond to Fr. Bourke’s letter regarding the
Common Core. Unfortunately, in the press the Common Core has been equated to highly structured and convoluted lessons and an over-abundance of standardized testing.
I have been using the Common Core with other teachers at Immaculate for several years. In my experience, the Common Core is none of these things. The Common Core is a list of specific standards that children should master at each
grade level. That is it. How things are taught, or how much testing is required are never mentioned in the Common
Core. It seems to me that school districts are the ones mandating the techniques and testing that give the Common Core
a bad name.
Even though I have been teaching for 24 years, the Common Core has challenged me to be a better teacher.
Here are some things I really like about the Common Core:
-Learning at each grade level is very well defined so I know what each student coming in has been taught. There
are fewer standards than in the past, so teachers can go deep into the learning. For example, I have spent the last month
helping my students really master percentages in math.
-The Standards emphasize thinking and analysis over rote learning. For example, students need to learn not only
who the characters are in a story, but then they are asked to analyze the effects of the plot or setting on the characters’
development.
-There is a strong emphasis on textual support and evidence. Students are encouraged to support their arguments
with evidence that they glean from the text, rather than forming opinions based on feeling or prior opinions. (This seems
like something our country should embrace.)
-There is plenty of room to encourage creativity and imagination. In writing, I am supposed to teach different
genres, but I am free to allow students to write about any topic. For example, this year my students have written research papers, literary analyses, mystery stories, restaurant reviews, editorials, and descriptions of classmates.
The Common Core provides continuity and structure. The worst thing that could happen is for states to throw out the
Common Core and look for something new. As a nation, we should agree on the basic things a 7th grader should learn in
the core subjects. That way, no matter where a child moves, he or she will be able to fit right in to the new environment. With the Common Core, there is plenty of room for local curricula and in-depth projects. Currently, my students
are learning how to read complex text, but the subject area is the Holocaust, which is not mentioned at all in the Common Core.

Tri-Parish Food Bank Update
Generous donations in November and December from the community, Seattle parishes, and the financial support from the Tri-Parishes allowed over 240 families consisting of over 800 individuals to enjoy the holiday
season with filling meals. Harry Chapin (a 1970’s singer/songwriter and World Hunger activist) reflected on
how extremely generously schools and community groups support the hungry during the holidays. He went
on to ask the hard question—What are the needy going to eat the rest of the year? The regular monthly financial support
from the Tri-Parish parishioners continues to be the mainstay in providing this help during the other 10 months. Thank
you for helping feed the hungry all year.

Your Donations Do Make a Difference
Many additional collections are taken during the year and your generous response has made a difference to our parish.
We recently received a check from Catholic Community Services for $1,175 which was a rebate of a portion of what
was collected. Each year we also receive a Rice Bowl Grant due to our parish participation in the CRS Rice Bowl
campaign. Both of these benefitted our Outreach Fund.
We also received two rebate checks from the Annual Catholic Appeal totaling $1,718.77 which have gone to the Capital
Campaign Fund. This is the amount the Diocese received so far in excess of our goal for 2014 and more is yet to come.
Again, thank you for your generosity and know the Lord will bless you for sharing your gifts.

Catholic Home Missions
This weekend we take up a second collection for the Catholic
Home Missions, which includes the Black and Indian Missions.
This collection strengthens the Catholic Church in the United
States and its territories, funding a wide range of pastoral services,
including evangelization, religious education, and the maintenance
of mission parishes, the training of seminarians and lay ministers,
and ministry with ethnic groups, particularly for Native and
African American parishes and communitions.
Soup Supper Announcement 2015
Your Knights of Columbus Council 2126 is sponsoring Soup Suppers every Wednesday, after Ash
Wednesday (February 25-April 1), through the Lenten Season at the Saint Joseph’s Center. Please come
and join us for soup and fellowship. We begin serving at 4:30 and close the doors at 7:00. All proceeds
from this event will go to the construction of the new church.

The New Church: The br ickwor k on the South side of the main body of the chur ch ar ound the windows was
completed last week. The brickwork on the North side is in progress this week. The scaffolding on the towers is for the
stucco work which will occur over a few weeks. The interior insulation is complete and the plasterboard (GWB gypsum
wall board) will be installed first in the Narthex area.
Extra lightening has been activated on the site along with additional video cameras. Remember, closed circuit TV cameras help deter criminals, but do not prevent all theft. Keep an eye on the site after dark.
This past week was the last one to order bricks to appear at the entrance of the church at the first Masses. Bricks
ordered after February 20th will NOT be present at the new church opening but are still available for purchase.
Installation is scheduled for late March or early April! For ms ar e available at the chur ch or the chur ch office.
Landscaping/Irrigation: Seven people helped with the planting of the nine new tr ees at the site. We want to thank
the following people: Abel and Eustalio from Urban Forest Nursery, Greg, Socorro, Jetza, Rigo and Tom. This finishes
the first round of tree planting. More will follow as the site dries out. We still have stump removal and excavation work
to perform. If you have a SMALL EXCAVATOR that we can use on a weekend, let me know because it will cost $200
to rent one.

Las aguas del Bautismo nos hacen parte de la nueva alianza en Cristo. Pero la carta pastoral de
los obispos sobre la administración nos recuerda que “ hay una obligación fundamental que surge del sacramento del bautismo...que la gente ponga sus dones, sus recursos—a si mismos—al
servicio de Dios en y a través de sus Iglesia.”

Refutación
Como profesora en la Escuela Regional de la Inmaculada Concepción, me siento obligada a responder a la carta del Padre Martin Bourke que se publicó hace dos semanas, en relación al Núcleo Básico. Por desgracia, en
la prensa el básico común se ha equiparado a clases muy estructuradas y enrevesadas y una sobre-abundante
de exámenes estandarizados.
He estado usando el Núcleo Básico con otros profesores de la Inmaculada desde hace varios años. En mi experiencia, el Núcleo Básico no es ninguna de estas cosas. El Núcleo Básico es una lista de las normas específicas
que los niños deben dominar en cada grado. Eso es todo. ¿Cómo se les enseña las cosas, o la cantidad de exámenes requeridos nunca que nunca mencionan el Núcleo Básico. Me parece que los distritos escolares son los
que eligen las técnicas y los exámenes que le dan al núcleo básico una mala fama.
Aunque he estado enseñando durante 24 años, el núcleo básico me ha retado a ser una mejor profesora.
Aquí hay algunas cosas que me gustan sobre el Núcleo Básico:
-Aprender el nivel de cada grado está muy bien definida, así que sé lo que a cada estudiante que entra
se le ha enseñado. Hay menos normas que en el pasado, que los maestros pueden profundizar en el aprendizaje. Por ejemplo, he pasado el último mes ayudando a mis estudiantes realmente a dominar porcentajes en matemáticas.
-Las Normas enfatizan el pensamiento y el análisis sobre el aprendizaje de memoria. Por ejemplo, los
estudiantes necesitan aprender no sólo quiénes son los personajes en una historia, sino que se les pide que analicen los efectos de la trama o el establecimiento en el desarrollo de los personajes.
-Hay Un fuerte énfasis en el apoyo textual y la evidencia. Animamos a los estudiantes para apoyar sus
argumentos con pruebas que deducen del texto, en lugar de formar opiniones basadas en sentimientos u opiniones anteriores. (Esto parece como algo que nuestro país debería abrazar.)
-Hay Un montón de espacio para fomentar la creatividad y la imaginación. En la escritura, se supone
que debo enseñar diferentes géneros, pero yo soy libre para permitir que los estudiantes escriban sobre cualquier tema. Por ejemplo, este año mis alumnos han escrito trabajos de investigación, análisis literarios, historias de misterio, reseñas de restaurantes, editoriales, y descripciones de los compañeros de clase.
El Núcleo Básico proporciona continuidad y estructura. Lo peor que podría pasar es que los estados desechen
el núcleo básico y busquen algo nuevo. Como nación, debemos ponernos de acuerdo en las cosas básicas que
un séptimo grado debe aprender en las materias básicas. De esa manera, no importa donde un niño se mueva,
él o ella serán capaz de adaptarse a la derecha en el nuevo entorno. Con el núcleo básico, hay mucho espacio
para los planes de estudios locales y también para proyectos profundos. Actualmente, mis alumnos están
aprendiendo a leer un texto complejo, pero el tema es el Holocausto, que no se menciona en absoluto en el Núcleo Básico.
El núcleo básico se ha convertido en el chivo expiatorio del mal sistema educativo americano. Si usted se pregunta sobre el núcleo básico, vaya a Commoncore.org y lea las normas y vea por sí mismo. O, mejor aún, haga

yeso se instalará por primera vez en la zona Narthex.
Un aligeramiento adicional se ha activado en la construcción
junto con las cámaras de vídeo adicionales. Recuerde, cámaras
de televisión de circuito cerrado ayudan a disuadir a los delincuentes, pero no impiden los robos. Mantenga un ojo en la
construcción después del anochecer.
La semana pasada fue la última para pedir ladrillos tributo, que
se colocaran para la inauguración de la iglesia, para la celebración de las primeras misas, los ladrillos ordenados después
de 20 de febrero no estarán aun instalados para la apertura de
la iglesia, pero aún están disponibles para la compra. La instalación está prevista para finales de marzo o principios de
abril! Los formularios están disponibles en la iglesia o en la
oficina de la iglesia.
Irrigación y Jardinería: Siete personas ayudaron con la plantación de los nueve nuevos árboles en el jardín de la Nueva
Iglesia. Queremos agradecer a las siguientes personas: Abel
y Eustalio de Urban, Vivero Forestal, Greg, Socorro, Jetza,
Rigo y Tom. Con esto termina la primera ronda de la plantación de árboles. seguiremos con mas, cuando el terreno este
más seco. Si usted tiene una excavadora PEQUEÑA que podemos utilizar en un fin de semana, háganoslo saber, ya
que tendrá un costo de $200 a alquilar uno.
Reuniones: La próxima reunión del Comité de Creación será
el lunes 2 de marzo a las 7 pm en la rectoría para discutir las
inscripciones en el altar, ambón y el tabernáculo, del soporte del santuario. Inspección para el costo de la restauración
de las estaciones de la cruz se hizo la semana pasada. La
próxima reunión del comité de Campaña de Capital será el
4 de marzo a las 6 pm en la rectoría y la evaluación de la
recaudación de fondos del festival Mardi Gras se hará. También se discutirá sobre el torneo de golf y otros eventos de
recaudación de fondos. Como siempre, todas las reuniones
del comité están abiertas a todos los miembros de la parroquia y siempre están buscando nuevas ideas.

Un gracias simplemente no es suficiente para mostrar
nuestro agradecimiento a todos los
que ayudaron con la instalación,
preparación de la cena, el servicio y
la limpieza. No podríamos haber
hecho todo esto sin ustedes y, por
supuesto, Gracias a los que vinieron y cenaron "spaghetti Cajun", y
disfrutaron de una noche de coloridas máscaras del festival, y bailaron buena música, Regli Wilson fue la ganadora de mascara mas colorida!
