Message from Pastor Nina
Pääsiäinen ja sitä edeltävä paaston aika ovat tänä vuonna aikaisin. Paaston aika huipentuu hiljaiseen
viikkoon. Hiljaisella viikolla, kiirastorstaina, pysähdymme ehtoollisen äärelle. Pääsiäisaterian äärelle, joka oli
Jeesuksen ja hänen ystäviensä viimeinen ateria yhdessä. - Ateriasta, joka oli täysi ateria leipineen, lampaan
lihoineen, yrtteineen, tahnoineen, viineineen, tuli myöhemmin pieni tippa viiniä ja pyöreä, litteä leipänen.
Vielä alkukirkon aikaan ehtoollisatreia oli ateria. Pääsiäisaterialla perinteisesti muisteltiin Egyptin
orjuudesta vapautumista, sitä miten Jumala johdatti juutalaiset (heprealaiset) faaraon ikeen alta. Ja oli lukuisia
lauluja, ylistyksiä, maljojen siunauksia. Yhdessä.
Lähellä meitä voisi olla jouluateria yhdessä perheen ja läheisten kanssa, varsinkin, jos siihen liittyy
kiitollisuus Jeesuksen syntymästä. Niinkuin perheen joulu- tai kiitospäivän aterialla, pääsiäisaterialla yhdessä
syöminen oli yhtä tärkeä kuin ateria itse. Jeesus toimi aterian isäntänä, joka mursi leipää jaettavaksi, siunasi
viinimaljan ja laittoi kiertämään.
Tämä viinimalja on saanut paljon huomiota historian kuluessa, saaden nimeksi Graalin malja. Raamattu
ei kerro mitään siitä, mutta 600 luvulta lähtien Graalin malja mainitaan joissain teksteissä. Sen uskotaaan
olevan malja, johon Jeesuksen ystävä Joosef Arimatialainen olisi kerännyt ristillä olevan Jeesuksen
veripisaroita. Joidenkin mielestä se on pääsiäisaterialla käytetty malja. Joidenkin mielestä malja on
kumpaakin.
Graalin maljassa uskotaan olevan parantavia voimia ja uskotaan sen olevan ikuisen elämän takaaja. Sitä
on etsitty vuosisatojen ajan, monet ovat käyttäneet vuosia elämästään sen etsimiseen, uhranneet paljon varoja,
lukuisia ihmisiä on kuollut yrityksissä ja lukuisia tapettu maljan vuoksi. Maljaa on etsitty mm. Britanniasta,
Turkista, Espanjasta. Aina silloin tällöin joku on väittänyt löytäneensä sen.
Kristitty kysyy itseltään: 'Onko aitoaa pyhää Graalin maljaa olemassa?' Itse vastaan: 'Luultavasti ei. Ja
vaikka olisi, mitä merkitystä sillä olisi?' Graalin maljaa jahdanneet ovat halunneet jotain erikoista itselleen,
hinnalla millä hyvänsä. Ikuista elämää, valtaa, kunniaa.
Mikä täydellien vastakohta sille maljalle, joka siunausten jälkeen laitettiin kiertämään Jeesuksen
seurueessa ensimmäisenä kiirastorstaina. Sillä aterialla maljojen ja siunausten kera sinetöitiin liitto; Jumalan ja
hänen rakastamiensa ihmisten keskeinen liitto, rakkauden ja anteeksiantamuksen liitto. Malja jaettiin,
osallisuus Kristuksessa olevasta Jumalan rakkaudesta jaettiin.
Kenialaisen sananlaskun mukaan yksittäiset risut ja kepit voidaan taittaa ja murtaa, nipussa olevia ei.
Ehtoollinen sitoo meitä toisiimme. Toiset meistä on heikkoja, toiset vahvoja. Ehtoollisen rakkaus ja
anteeksiantamus kutsuu meitä nojaamaan toisiimme. Nipussa olevaa risukimppua ei voi murtaa.
Jumalan rakkauden malja ei ikinä ole kadoksissa.
Lent and Easter are early this year. The culmination of Lent is the Holy Week. On the Maundy
Thursday we pause and contemplate on the Holy Communion, on the Easter meal which was the last common
meal for Jesus and his friends. The full Easter meal with bread, lamb meat, herbs, patees, and wines later
became a drop of wine and a small, flat piece of bread. During the Early Church the Communion was still a
whole meal.
At the Easter meal traditionally the story of Exodus (when God led the Israelites out of the slavery in
Egypt) was recited, and there were songs, psalms, praises, and blessings of cups. Together. A little bit like a
Christmas meal with family and loved ones, especially if being thankful for Jesus’ birth was connected to it.
Like at the family Christmas or Thanksgiving meal, eating together on the Easter meal was as important as the
food itself. Jesus was the host, who broke the bread and blessed the cup to be shared.

This wine cup has got a lot of attention throughout history, getting the name ‘The Holy Grail’. The
Bible does not tell anything about it, but some scriptures from the 7th century talk about it. It is believed to be a
cup, in which Jesus’ friend Joseph of Arimathea collected Jesus’ blood drops when he was on the cross. Others
say that it was the original cup of the Easter meal. Some say that it is both.
The Holy Grail is supposed to have healing powers and be a guarantee for eternal life. It has been
searched for centuries, many people spent most years of their life looking for it, used a lot of money to do it,
many people have died on the search and many people have been killed because of it.
The lost Holy Grail has been searched for in the Great Britain, Turkey and Spain. Every once in a while
somebody claims that he/she has found it.
The Christian can ask: ‘ Does a genuine Holy Grail exist? I say, most likely not. And even if it would,
what would it matter? Those who have chased for the cup have wanted something special for themselves, at all
cost; eternal life, power, glory.
What a perfect opposite to that cup, which after the blessings was shared with all at Jesus’ party on the
first Maundy Thursday. At that meal a covenant between God and the people whom he loves was sealed with
blessings and sharing the wine cup. It is the covenant of love and forgiveness. The wine in the cup was shared,
God’s love in Christ was shared.
According to a Kenyan proverb single sticks and dry twigs can be broken, but not if they are in a bundle.
The Holy Communion binds us together. Some of us are weak, some are strong. The love and forgiveness of the
Holy Communion calls us to lean on each other. A bundle of sticks and twigs cannot be broken.
The Cup of God’s love is never lost.

February 2016 in FLC:
Pastor Nina Tetri-Mustonen left us on February 8. She is now back in Finland and is working this spring in
the Keski-Lahden congregation. That congregation has around 20,000 members and is served by 12 pastors.
Council meeting on February 20: In the spring of 2016 we are happy and grateful that we will get help from
local pastors as we have had before. At the moment we do not have Sunday school. We truly would welcome
all children to church so we can start Sunday school again - please talk to any council member.
The church's pitopöytä/brunch program will continue in March and April, thanks to Chef Gunnar!
The Easter service March 27 feature special music and choir. Please remember to bring flowers for the cross!!

"Näin Presidentinpäivän jälkeen vähän historiaa. Vuonna
1761 saapui orjalaiva Bostoniin. Laivassa oli pieni tyttö,
ilman vaatteita ja ilman hampaita. Hänet osti hyvin voipa
perhe, joka antoi hänelle nimen Phillis Wheatley. He
pitivät tytöstä hyvää huolta. Opettivat lukemaan ja
kirjoittamaan. Myöhemmin he antoivat hänelle vapauden
orjan osasta. Phillis rakasti Amerikkaa. Hän halusi mennä
kirkkoon, ja myöhemmin sai siellä kasteen. Näin hän halusi
seurata Jeesusta. Phillis kirjoitti runon ja lähetti sen
Kenraali Washingtonille, jota hän kovasti ihaili ja
kunnioitti. Washington piti runosta niin paljon, että hän
kirjoitti takaisin ja kutsui tytön hänen päämajaansa. Kolme

Borrowed wisdoms. I have been young, and now I am old,

think mowed? Genuine concern for others, is mark of great
spiritual coach. To stay youthful, stay useful. The obstacles
that we must face, along life`s rocky way. We are used by
God so we might hear, "Well done" from Him someday.

Phillis Wheatley (c. 1758 – December 5, 1784) was the first
published African-American female poet. Born in West Africa,
she was sold into slavery at the age of seven and transported to
North America. She was purchased by the Wheatley family of
Boston, who taught her to read and write, and encouraged her
poetry when they saw her talent.
The publication of her Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and
Moral (1773) brought her fame both in England and the
American colonies; figures such as George Washington praised
her work. During Wheatley's visit to England with her master's
son, the African-American poet Jupiter Hammon praised her
work in his own poem. Wheatley was emancipated after the death
of her master John Wheatley. She married soon after. Two of
her children died as infants. After her husband was imprisoned
for debt in 1784, Wheatley fell into poverty and died of illness,
quickly followed by the death of her surviving infant son.
