ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
Year One (2014): Individuals transformed by Encounters
4th Sunday of Advent
"Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Mary chose to cooperate with God. She didn't completely understand how his plan was going to unfold. She couldn't have
known exactly what it all meant for her future. But she chose to offer
herself to God's service nonetheless. And thanks to that generosity, the
first Christmas happened nine months later.
Mary gives us a powerful example of saying yes to God. For her, the
divine plan was revealed through the visit of the angel Gabriel. For us, it
is usually revealed in less dramatic ways. We hear God's voice through
the readings at Mass, through the homily, through the wise counsel of a
trusted friend, through a spiritual book, through an inspirational speaker,
or just in the prayerful silence of our own hearts. Regardless of how
God speaks to us, we are in a similar situation to Mary's. We are faced
with the choice either to accept God's will in our lives, saying yes as
Mary did, or to say no and choose a different path. It may be tempting to
stick to more familiar ground or to avoid the challenge of surrendering
our plans to God. But just look what happened when Mary decided to let
God lead: the greatest miracle in all of history! God became man because of a faithful woman. And God wants to work miracles through us
too. Every time we cooperate with his will, he transforms us into more
loving, more generous people.
As we round the corner toward Christmas this week, may we embrace
God's will in our lives with the same joy and openness that ultimately
allowed Mary to embrace the infant Jesus in her arms on Christmas Day.

Deacon’s Corner: (By Deacon Al)
We have just celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception
but what is the Immaculate Conception? The Immaculate Conception
refers to the condition that the Blessed Virgin Mary was free from original sin from the very moment of her conception in the womb of her
mother, Saint Anne. We celebrate the Birth of the Blessed Virgin on
September 8; nine months before is December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. It took centuries for the Catholic Church to declare the Immaculate Conception as doctrine. On December 8, 1854
Pope Pius IX declared it a dogma in his Apostolic Constitution Ineffabilis Deus. Pope Pius IX wrote that "We declare, pronounce, and define
that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the
first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of
the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a
doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful." A misconception some have is that Mary's
Immaculate Conception was necessary to ensure that original sin would
not be passed on to Christ. This was never a part of the teaching on the
Immaculate Conception. The Immaculate Conception represents
Christ's saving grace operating in Mary.
Worship Corner: The Eucharistic Prayer: The long prayer which follows brings us to the very center of the Mass and the heart of our faith.
While the words of the prayer may vary from Sunday to Sunday, the
prayer always has this structure: 1) We call upon God to remember all
the wonderful saving deeds of our history. 2) We recall the central event
in our history, Jesus Christ, and in particular the memorial he left us on
the night before he died. We recall his passion, death and resurrection.
3) After gratefully calling to mind all the wonderful saving acts God has
done for us in the past, we petition God to continue those deeds of
Christ in the present. We pray that we may become one body, one spirit
in Christ.
What St. Augustine’s Church is doing this Advent
We are needing a LOT more stars. We want this to be an “action”
Advent – doing “Good Deeds”. Everyone is being challenged to do
“Good Deeds” this Advent and to write about them on “stars” that are in
the back of church to the left as you are walking out of church. (If we
are out of stars, write it on a piece of paper and we will transfer them to
Christmas tree that is up by the altar during Christmas Season. The goal
is to have so many stars that we can’t see the tree!!! Doing “Good
Deeds” for Advent will not stop at Christmas. It will carry on
through the Christmas Season and maybe it will become an everyday
habit of doing “Good Deeds” each and every day.

CANNED FOOD for FOOD PANTRY - A SPECIAL THANK YOU!!
Parishioners of St. Augustine collected over a half a ton of canned goods
and non perishable items for our Outreach Center. The food that the teens
collected served families for about 1 month. We ask that you continue this
ongoing ministry so that we may continue to help feed those in need. Please
keep it up as our numbers increase daily!
The FOOD PANTRY will be closed the Saturdays after Christmas
and before New Years. We are in constant need of bottled or canned fruit
juice, canned peas, mixed vegetables, tomatoes and carrots, canned fruit,

detergent, toothpaste, rice, instant potatoes, Sunny D, syrup, pancake mix,
grape and strawberry jelly are all examples of items we always need that
can be purchased for just $1.00! Thanks for all your continued support.

Questions for the Fourth Sunday of Advent
“...for nothing will be impossible for God.” Two sayings come to mind
that are related to this passage: “Let go and let God.” “Work as if everything depends on you; pray as if everything depends on God.” Which
saying fits your personality and approach to life most closely? How will
you learn to take the other saying to heart, as well, so that you do come
to understand that nothing is impossible for God?
Saint Leo the Great
Saint Leo the Great was pope in the 5th century, and wrote on Mary
being the Temple of God that housed and nourished Christ. That unity
and relationship made Her a Royal Mother.
“A royal virgin of the house of David is chosen. She is to bear holy
child, one who is both God and man. She is to conceive him in her soul
before she conceives him in her body. In the face of so unheard of an
event she is to know no fear through ignorance of the divine plan; the
angel tells her what is to be accomplished in her by the Holy Spirit.” Saint Leo the Great
Liturgists, songwriters and singers David Haas and Lori True will
be at Church of the Redeemer for a free concert on Friday night, February 6th . There will be a workshop on Saturday, February 7th. Contact
their church office for more information 804-746-4911.

REFLEXIONES
