The Baptism of The Lord
World Meeting of Families Patron Saints
Saint John Paul II and Saint Gianna have been
chosen as the two worthy Patron Saints to guide all in
preparation and participation of this
international event as they fully embody the
history, mission and theme of the
World Meeting of Families 2015.—
Archbishop Charles J. Chaput
Saint John Paul II—In 1979, Saint John Paul II was
the first pope to visit Philadelphia, where
he said Mass on Logan Circle for nearly
one million people filling the Benjamin
Franklin Parkway. In 1994, he celebrated
the first World Meeting of Families in
Rome, which aimed to strengthen the
sacred bonds of family across the globe. Upon his
canonization, he was declared “the pope of the family.”
Saint Gianna Beretta Molla—
A pediatrician and mother of four, Saint
Gianna is best known for her selfless love as
a mother, giving her life to bear her fourth
child in 1962. She was beatified by Saint
John Paul II in 1994 and canonized in
2004. Saint Gianna is the Patron Saint for
mothers, physicians and unborn children. Her life was a
testament to “the family fully alive,” the theme for the
World Meeting of Families—2015.
World Meeting of FamiliesMorning & Evenings Sessions
for Preparation
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is hosting World Meeting of Families, in September
2015, which will culminate with a visit from our Holy Father, Pope
Francis. This event which occurs only once every 3 years, and was
initiated by St John Paul II, brings people together from around the
world to pray, learn, and embrace the importance of the family, in its
many shapes and sizes, and recognize it as a critical foundation to our
global society. In preparation of the event ALL are welcomed and
encouraged to attend the sessions being offered here at SPX. The
morning sessions dates are: Wednesdays, 11:30am-12;45pm on 1/14,
2/11, 3/11, 4/15, 5/13, 6/17, 7/15, 8/12 and 9/2. Call Rita at 610-5435348 if you have questions. The evening sessions will meet once per
month, 7:30 - 9:00 pm in the SPX Dowd Center in the church basement. Our first session will be Wednesday, 1/7/15, and will serve as
an information night. The universal guide created for this event, "Love
is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive" will be available during the
information session. If you do not have a copy of the book, you will
receive a free copy at the meeting. Each chapter covers a different
subject yet is complementary to the others. Registration is not required
and there is no fee for participation. The subsequent sessions will
follow on the 1st Wednesday of each month: 2/4; 3/4; 4/1; 5/6; and
6/3. We hope you will join us, and please invite a family member or
friend as we prepare for this unique opportunity to share in this very
special and important event. If you have any questions, please email
either: Chas DeFeo [email protected]; Bernie Long [email protected] ; or Trisha Brown [email protected]. If you
have missed any of the meetings, you are welcome to join us anyway!

The Baptism of The Lord
Dear Sisters & Brothers,
Today the Church celebrates The Baptism of the Lord. Water is the most abundant substance on
earth. We drink it, we wash with it, we play in it, we transport on it, we grow food with it, we dilute with it, we
sit on a shore and dream with it. Consider any given day and how often water comes into play. Yet, unless
the water is shut off to our homes or places of work, we seldom think about it. It’s just there—everywhere and
all the time. Water is so easy to take for granted. Given the abundance and usefulness of water, it ought to be
no surprise that our first sacrament, baptism, uses water as its primary symbol. And just like the water around
us, we can so easily take our baptism for granted. Today’s Feast and gospel can be a reminder to us that we
can never take either water or our baptism for granted.
We mark the end of this Christmas Season with this feast of the Lord’s Baptism. May we all keep the
flame of Christ that dwells within us, because of our Baptism, bright and cheerful in our life’s journey.
As we end this Christmas Season, please accept my thanks and the thanks of Father Waters,
Monsignor Jagodzinski and Father Weber for all the nice and thoughtful Christmas greetings, spiritual
enrollments, tasty Christmas goodies, and gifts that have been extended to us. We are humbled, grateful,
and appreciative of your kindness to us. Please pray for us. Know that we do pray and remember all of you
at Mass. May God bless you and yours in 2015.
As we end this Christmas Season, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia recognizes Catechists who have
reached milestones in service to the parish CCD. These Catechetical Awards were presented at the
Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul on Saturday, January 10th. Eight of our parish catechists have
been honored. On behalf of the entire parish community I thank them and congratulate them on receiving these awards.

The Legion at S.P.X. is a ministry of Catholics age 18
and over. The Blessed Virgin Mary is our
Spiritual Mother. She has a special God-given
role in helping us grow in the life of Christian
virtues. She is our great model on how to follow
Christ. Meetings are held every Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
in the S.P.X. Conference Rm. in the Dowd Ctr. The Legion prayers
& rosary are recited and spiritual reading is discussed. Members
receive weekly assignments...visiting nursing homes, homebound/
sick, etc. They take Our Lord's advice "to let your light shine." The
Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima is available for a week's visit
or more to your home to bring many graces. Questions about the
LOM and Pilgrim Statue, please call Mary Pat Sfida, 610-4498758. PRAY THE ROSARY....it brings a treasure of blessings
and is the scourge of the devil.

Jesus to them. If you would like us to come to pray, visit, talk or
share the blessings God has graced all of us with, please call and
we will set a convenient time to get together. Contact Cathy at

SIMPLE WAYS TO HELP ST. PIUS X SCHOOL
Here are easy ways to help St. Pius raise money for our school.
None of them cost a dime and all of them take just
a minute of your time. Please consider helping us through one
or all of these initiatives. Contact Jen Tuberosa with questions,
suggestions or if you need help registering for any of these
programs (484-919-3968 or [email protected].) On
behalf of the entire school community, we thank you!
GIANT A+ SCHOOL REWARDS PROGRAM
Help St. Pius School raise money by registering your Giant
card with their A+ School Rewards program. Last year, SPX
was awarded more than $1000 through this program. All you
need to do is visit http://www.giantfoodstores.com/aplus/ and
enter your card number. Our school identification number is
03629. That’s all you have to do and the money helps our
school tremendously. We used the proceeds from last year to
help offset some costs to our kitchen upgrade so that we could
have a great, new lunch program for our students. Please
share this information with friends and neighbors and help us
increase the amount this coming year.
We are a Tithing Parish
TD BANK AFFINITY PROGRAM
St. Pius School continues to participate in the wonderful TD
Bank Affinity program which yielded a donation of nearly $5000
this past school year. To help us continue to benefit from this
great program, all we need you to do is call the Lawrence Park
Branch at (610)359-9240 and tell them that you want to link your
current account to the St. Pius X Affinity Program. If you do not
have any accounts there and are interested in supporting this
program, simply go to the Lawrence Park Branch Office and ask
to open an account and have it linked to St. Pius X. We earn
money based on the total amount in the accounts linked to our
school. Your account information remains completely
TARGET RED CARD PROGRAM
St. Pius School also participates in the Target Red Card program.
Visit Target.com/tcoe or call 1-800-316-6142 todesignate SPX, then
use your REDcard whenever you shop. When you use your REDcard
(Target Credit Card, Target Debit Card or Target Visa Credit Card),
Target will donate up to 1% of your purchases to Pius. It’s that simple.
And all of your information (account number, purchases, etc.)
remains private. Learn more at Target.com/redcard or stop in a
Target store to apply. Grandparents, alumni, friends and neighbors
are all welcome to participate in the program. The more people we
involve, the harder the program works for our school. Check out our
school’s progress anytime at Target.com/tcoe. We recently received
a check for $600.

St. Pius X ADULT CHOIR
Sing to the Lord a new song;
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, praise his name!
Could the psalm be any clearer? There can be no doubt that we are all called
to sing the Lord’s praises, whether in our pew singing congregational hymns
and psalms, or in the choir loft singing specially prepared music which praises
His name in a very intense way. Our choir season has begun for this
liturgical year, but it is not at all too late to add your voice to that of the faithful
members of our SPX adult choir. We would really love to have you join us!
Choir rehearses every Thursday evening from 7:00 until about 8:30 and sings
each week at either the Saturday vigil, or the 9:30, or the 11:30 Sunday Masses as well as at special festive liturgies throughout the year. We are in special
need of MEN’S voice. You need not be able to read music to join, just to be
able to match pitches. You don’t even need to be to be able to be at every
rehearsal and every Mass we sing...we practice each piece many times so
that all will be comfortably familiar before we perform it. Please give serious
thought to adding your voice to ours, especially if you have had some
experience singing in school, or church, or even in a well-tuned shower stall. If
you would like further information, please call Bob Jones at 610-357-0047, or
email [email protected] or just climb the stairs at the rear of the
church up to the choir loft any Thursday night. We’ll be looking for you!
Mark your calendars now for the 21st Annual Mom Heart
of the Home Spring Day of Renewal on March 21, 2015
from 9am to 3:30pm at Sts. Simon and Jude Meehan
Center, West Chester. Calling all moms, grandmothers,
step-mothers, or women of nurturing nature. Do yourself
a favor...Plan ahead to spend the day with us! Give yourself this one day out of 365 to slow down and replenish
your spirit. Deepen your relationship with God and Mary,
Our Mother. The day includes times of reflection with all
of our amazing, inspirational morning and afternoon
speakers. Registration opens in December. For more
information please visit http://www.momheartofthehome.org to see what we’re all about!
MARCH FOR LIFE
On Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 7:00am buses will depart
from the St. Pius X parking lot for the annual March for Life.
This one mile walk in Washington, DC, protests the infamous
Roe v. Wade decision which legalized abortion in all fifty states.
The buses will return at approxiamately 7:00pm. The cost of the
trip is Ten dollars ($10.00). Children, students, senior citizens
and clergy are free. Please make the effort to end this 42 year
holocaust. Over 55,000,000 babies have been killed since
1973. Call John Williamson of the St. Pius X Respect Life
Committee for your reservation at 610-446-5600.
