We are a Tithing Parish 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time World Meeting of Families Patron Saints Saint John Paul II and Saint Gianna have been chosen as the two worthy Patron Saints to guide all in preparation and participation of this international event as they fully embody the history, mission and theme of the World Meeting of Families 2015.— Archbishop Charles J. Chaput Saint John Paul II—In 1979, Saint John Paul II was the first pope to visit Philadelphia, where he said Mass on Logan Circle for nearly one million people filling the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. In 1994, he celebrated the first World Meeting of Families in Rome, which aimed to strengthen the sacred bonds of family across the globe. Upon his canonization, he was declared “the pope of the family.” Saint Gianna Beretta Molla— A pediatrician and mother of four, Saint Gianna is best known for her selfless love as a mother, giving her life to bear her fourth child in 1962. She was beatified by Saint John Paul II in 1994 and canonized in 2004. Saint Gianna is the Patron Saint for mothers, physicians and unborn children. Her life was a testament to “the family fully alive,” the theme for the World Meeting of Families—2015. World Meeting of FamiliesMorning & Evenings Sessions for Preparation The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is hosting World Meeting of Families, in September 2015, which will culminate with a visit from our Holy Father, Pope Francis. This event which occurs only once every 3 years, and was initiated by St John Paul II, brings people together from around the world to pray, learn, and embrace the importance of the family, in its many shapes and sizes, and recognize it as a critical foundation to our global society. In preparation of the event ALL are welcomed and encouraged to attend the sessions being offered here at SPX. The morning sessions dates are: Wednesdays, 11:30am-12;45pm on 1/14, 2/11, 3/11, 4/15, 5/13, 6/17, 7/15, 8/12 and 9/2. Call Rita at 610-5435348 if you have questions. The evening sessions will meet once per month, 7:30 - 9:00 pm in the SPX Dowd Center in the church basement. Our first session will be Wednesday, 1/7/15, and will serve as an information night. The universal guide created for this event, "Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive" will be available during the information session. If you do not have a copy of the book, you will receive a free copy at the meeting. Each chapter covers a different subject yet is complementary to the others. Registration is not required and there is no fee for participation. The subsequent sessions will follow on the 1st Wednesday of each month: 2/4; 3/4; 4/1; 5/6; and 6/3. We hope you will join us, and please invite a family member or friend as we prepare for this unique opportunity to share in this very special and important event. If you have any questions, please email either: Chas DeFeo [email protected]; Bernie Long [email protected] ; or Trisha Brown [email protected]. If you have missed any of the meetings, you are welcome to join us anyway! 181—Saint Pius X Page 4 February 8, 2015 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Sisters and Brothers, During these dark and cold winter days, our God calls us to gather here to witness the example set by Jesus. Gathered as we are in the warmth and light of our beautiful parish church, what do we do to bring that warmth and light outside with us, to a world that truly needs it? Let us pray this day and every day that we might be the warm light of Jesus in our community and our world. Even though it is so cold and dreary outside, spring will be here before we know it. The nature that is around us appears to be dead, but soon it will burst forth in new life and fill us with joy. On Wednesday, February 18 Lent begins. In Lent we recall the death of Christ, and then with Easter following just like spring, Jesus, who appeared to be dead, rises to New Life! Our lives are filled once again with true and lasting joy that can never be taken away because it is the joy of our Risen Savior Jesus! Below, please find the schedule of some of the events taking place at the beginning of the Lenten Season. Burning of the Palm Please bring the Blessed Palm from Palm Sunday last year to church next week. There are baskets in the vestibule. This palm will be used to make the ash used on Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday Blessed Ash will be distributed within all the Masses on Wednesday, February 18. Masses are at 6:30 AM, 8:00 AM, 9:00 AM, 12:05 PM, 7:00 PM. Lenten Daily Mass Prayer is a key component of our Lenten journey. The Celebration of the Mass is the most perfect prayer we can offer. We will have an extra daily mass at 12:05 PM Monday through Friday during Lent. The daily Mass schedule is as follows: Monday through Friday: 6:30 AM, 8:00 AM, 12:05 PM Saturday: 8:00 AM Stations of the Cross Stations of the Cross will be prayed every Friday at 7:00 PM. We are a Tithing Parish 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time World Meeting of Families: Chapter 4: Two Become One Our first three chapters reviewed basic Christian faith. We saw how confidence in Jesus opens the door to faith, enabling us to know God and what God has done in history. God creates male and female in his image, and makes a covenant with Israel and the Church. God is faithful to his promises, even when we sin. Because God loved us in this way, we spend our lives trying to return our love to God and share it with our neighbor. In this month’s chapter and in the chapters to come, we will study the implications of these doctrines for marriage and the family. When husband and wife promise to love each other as God loves us all, they make a commitment to love not only romantically, but also with mercy and forgiveness. Our culture sometimes teaches us to think of marriage as a negotiable contract between two individuals who happen to feel sexual chemistry. This view of love is a recipe for instability, since it is still premised on individualism and the waxing and waning of romantic feelings. The Church’s alternative account of love enables us to transcend the culture of individualism and become who we were created to be. Founded on Christ, sustained in the sacraments, Catholic marriage builds humility and self-sacrifice into the dynamic between male and female. As this month’s chapter explains in more detail, sacramental marriage creates intimate communion even in times of suffering and hardship. “Love is our mission,” as our catechism’s title declares, because Christ’s love frees us from false, shrunken accounts of love and makes us fully alive.— Dr. Christopher C. Roberts, catechism editor Did you know? The World Meeting of Families is for everyone, whether you are married, single, celibate, or consecrated!
