National IMPHAL, SATURDAY 10 JANUARY, 2015 5 For the first time, women of armed Jodhpur National University chairman forces to march on R-Day arrested in fake degree racket NEW DELHI, Jan 9 The armed forces for the first time will have all-women marching contingents, apart from their regular ones, in the Republic Day parade on the majestic Rajpath this year, which will have US President Barack Obama as the chief guest. It has been quite a scramble for the Army, Navy and IAF to look for 148 women each - one contingent commander, three platoon commanders and 144 in the marching block - since they still constitute a miniscule minority in the predominantly male environs of the over 13lakh strong armed forces. "The orders came from the top since PM Narendra Modi was keen on women empowerment and 'Naari Shakti' as the main theme for the parade. Women officers, with Blast at wind mill erection site in Satara kills three SATARA, Jan 9: Three construction workers were on Friday killed and five others got injured in a gelatin stick blast near a wind power station in Bothe village Satara, police said. The blast took place around 9.30 AM when gelatin sticks being used at the windmill erection site caught fire and exploded in a godown at Maan taluka here, claiming three lives, Dahiwadi police said. The deceased workers have been identified as Shashikant Kulkarni (40), Dadaso Ramchandra Jagdale (52) and Sandeep Uttam Mane (35), all hailing from Satara, police said. The injured have been admitted to Satara Civil hospital. Although the cause of the explosion has not been exactly ascertained, company (Quantinum Windmills) supervisor Hanmant Dake, who is one of the injured in the incident, said that combustion sparks from the waste dump outside the godown apparently triggered a blaze in the godown which resulted in the gelatin explosion. Maoists hack policeman to death RAIPUR, Jan 9: A police constable was hacked to death near a busy market place by the Maoists in Maoist insurgency at Dantewada district of South Chhattisgarh on Friday. The incident took place when a police platoon was returning from routing area domination exercise. The attack was carried out by a small action team of the Maoists. “They (Maoists) were four to five persons, two of them were in Maoist uniform. The deceased constable was the last one in the platoon formation which was returning to Katekalyan police camp,” added the SP. proper turnout, drill standards and fit enough for the 10-km march, have been pulled out from different stations across the country," said a source. Unlike paramilitary and police forces, the armed forces cannot draw women from other ranks for the parade since they induct them only as officers. Moreover, though women have been allowed to join the armed forces since the early-1990s, they currently number just about 3,000 of the 59,400 officers. The Army has around 1,300 women officers, IAF 1,350 and Navy 350. Women officers till recently could serve just a maximum of 14 years in branches like signals, engineers, aviation, intelligence, ordnance, air traffic controller and air defence due to what were called "operational, prac- tical and cultural problems". They can now opt for permanent commission but only in a few wings like legal, naval constructor, accounts and education. As earlier reported by TOI, the country's top civilian leadership and military brass have also been consistently opposed to deploying women in combat roles. So, women officers cannot be fighter pilots, serve on sea-faring warships or join the infantry, armoured corps or artillery. This when many countries around the globe have allowed it. Countries ranging from US and Russia to Turkey and Pakistan, for instance, have had women fighter pilots for long. Similarly, even countries like Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh deploy women on warships, with the US also allowing them on submarines. Press Trust of India JAIPUR, Jan 9: A private university chairman of Jodhpur has been arrested for allegedly providing fake degrees to students without their appearing in examinations, officials said. Kamal Mehta, chairman of Jodhpur National University was arrested by Special Operation Group (SOG) of Rajasthan police from outside a hotel in Delhi, for his involvement in providing fake degrees of his institution without having students attend classes or appear for examinations, (SOG) Additional SP Lalchand said. "Mehta was held outside a hotel in Delhi last evening. He will be produced in a court today," he said. According to the official, they used to charge Rs 10,000-15,000 for a graduation degree, they added. An arrest warrant was issued against the accused on January 2 by a lower court BSP leader Haji Yakub Qureshi booked for defending Paris terror attack HC directs Maha Govt to demolish illegal shrines Press Trust of India MUMBAI, Jan 9: The Bombay high court directed the Maharashtra government and all civic bodies in the state on Friday, to demolish all illegal shrines which have been built in violation of rules, while hearing a public interest litigation. A bench comprising justice Abhay Oka and justice Anil Menon asked the Maharashtra government to ensure that all such illegal shrines are demolished in accordance with a Government Resolution of 2011. The bench also asked secretary of urban development department and Mumbai municipal commissioner to file separate affidavits by February 28, stating what action they had taken against illegal shrines in the state. The judges posted the hearing of the petition, filed by activist Bhagwanji Riayani, to March 2. The petition alleged that around 17,000 illegal shrines had come up all over the state either in the middle of roads or on footpaths, obstructing movement of vehicles as well as pedestrians. The petition said that illegal shrines should be demolished as soon as possible and if action was not taken against them, the number of such illegal shrines would grow. The petition was filed a few years ago and the court had passed orders from time to time regarding demolition of illegal shrines. here, Lalchand said, adding that Mehta was elusive since the scam came to light. The SOG teams have seized several documents from the accused including degree sheets after arresting three touts identified as Manoj Kumar Pareek, Shyam Meena and Darshit Ajmera, a few days back, police said. According to the Additional SP Lalchand , they used to charge Rs 10,000-15,000 for a graduation degree, they added. Press Trust of India MEERUT, Jan 9: A case has been registered against former Uttar Pradesh minister and BSP leader HajiYakubQureshi for his controversial comments, in which he defended the terror attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. A case under section 505 1 (c) (with intent to incite, or likely to incite, any class or community of persons to commit any offence against any other class or community) of the IPC was registered against Qureshi last night in the Kotwali police station, SP Om Prakash said. The case was lodged on the complaint of Inspector Lal Singh and action will be taken after investigation, he said. Qureshi had yesterday courted controversy when he sought to defend the terror attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, saying whoever shows disrespect to the Prophet will invite death. "Prophet Mohammad had conveyed a message of peace to the entire world and if anyone makes certain cartoons on him will invite death like the cartoonists and journalists in Paris," Qureshi had said in comments that came at Tse/26512-10 a time when the massacre came in for all-round condemnation across the world. According to some media reports, Qureshi had also announced a reward of Rs 51 crore to the killers of the Paris journalists. He, however, later denied those reports. "I have not made any such announcement regarding the attack in Paris," he claimed. When asked about Qureshi's controversial comments, BSP leader Atar Singh Rav said he is not aware about the matter and will comment on it after talking to Qureshi about his stand. Four of France's most famous cartoonists were among the dozen people killed on Wednesday when gunmen attacked the Paris office of Charlie Hebdo. In 2006, Qureshi had stoked a huge controversy when he declared a reward of Rs 51 crore for anyone who would kill the Danish cartoonist who had created a controversial cartoon of Prophet Mohammed. He had made the offer at a public rally in Meerut.
