SPORTS IMPHAL SUNDAY 16 NOVEMBER 2014 Ronaldo claims Euro goals record, Germany win Rooney ‘considered quitting’ football at 14 Grzegorz Krychowiak, Sebastian Mila and Arkadiusz Milik. Shaun Maloney’s 75th-minute strike was enough for Scotland to beat Ireland 1-0 in Glasgow, moving the Scots level on points with Ireland and Germany. GROUP F : Greece continued its disastrous run in qualifying with a humiliating 1-0 defeat to the Faeroe Islands, while Northern Ireland surrendered its lead in Group F to Romania. The result in Piraeus could well prompt the dismissal of coach Claudio Ranieri, who hasn’t won a game since taking over as Greece coach in the summer and has now lost three straight at home. The Faeroe Islanders, winning only their third European qualifier in 19 years, celebrated after the four minutes of injury time were up. Several of them in tears as they were clapped by Greek fans at Karaiskaki Stadium. The remote nation of 50,000 inhabitants is ranked 187th among 208 nations in FIFA, while Greece is ranked 18th. Joan Edmundsson scored in the 61st minute, firing in a ball that fell favorably in front of Greece goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis. In Bucharest, Romania looked rejuvenated under coach Anghel Iordanescu, returning for his third spell at the national team, fighting hard to beat Northern Ireland 2-0. Paul Papp scored twice in six minutes in the second half, finally beating goalkeeper Roy Carroll who had been key to his country’s opening run of three wins. There was a late winner at Budapest’s Groupama Arena, where Hungary’s Zoltan Gera scored in the 84th minute to beat Finland 1-0 and claim third place. –– AP WATFORD, Nov 15 : England captain Wayne Rooney has revealed that he considered turning his back on football at the age of 14 after becoming disillusioned with the game. The 29-year-old is due to make his 100th international appearance in a Euro 2016 qualifier at home to Slovenia on Saturday, when he will be presented with a commemorative cap by England great Bobby Charlton. But on the eve of the game, the Manchester United star revealed that had it not been for Colin Harvey, a youth coach at his former club Everton, his football career might have been snuffed out before it had even begun. “I think for me, Colin Harvey was a massive help because when I was about 14, I really stopped enjoying playing football,” Rooney told journalists in a pre-match briefing. “At that age you just want to go and play football. And then around about that age, you start getting told what different things to do on the pitch, you’re learning the tactics of the game. “I felt at that moment that I just wanted to go and enjoy it. I felt that it was too much and I remember going home and telling my dad that I didn’t want to go anymore. “My dad was upset with me over it. And then I went in to see Colin Harvey and he was great for me. “He sat me down and made me fall back in love with it. From that moment on, that’s when I said to myself, ‘This is what I want to be doing.’ “At that time I was doing boxing as well as football, but that’s when I stopped going to boxing and focused solely on football. Thankfully it was the right decision.” –– Agencies BERLIN, Nov 15 Cristiano Ronaldo became the European Championships’ alltime top scorer by giving Portugal a 1-0 victory over Armenia, while Germany could only beat Gibraltar 4-0 as its World Cup victory hangover continued on Friday. Portugal captain Ronaldo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute to take his tally across Euro finals and qualifying to 23 goals. Denmark’s Jon Dahl Tomasson and Turkey’s Hakan Sukur had previously scored 22 goals each. Germany was looking for a high score against Gibraltar, a territory of just 30,000 people which is playing its first qualifying tournament and had already lost 7-0 to both Ireland and Poland in Group D. However, there were whistles from some fans at full-time after watching the World Cup holders labor against a defensively set-up side made up mostly of amateurs. Convincing in Brazil during the summer, Germany had been held to a 1-1 draw by Ireland and beaten 2-0 by Poland in its two previous Euro 2016 qualifiers. It also lost 4-2 to Argentina in a friendly repeat of the World Cup final in September. Elsewhere, Greece slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat at home to the Faeroe Islands and Denmark came from behind to beat Serbia 3-1. There were qualifying wins for Poland, Scotland, Romania and Hungary. In London, Teofilo ‘’Teo’’ Gutierrez headed in a late goal as Colombia came from behind to beat the United States 2-1 in a friendly. Here’s a roundup of action from Friday’s Euro 2016 qualifying games: GROUP I : Ronaldo’s Ronaldo dribbles the ball past Varazdat Haroyan of Armenia winner against Armenia meant Portugal stayed one point behind group leader Denmark. The Real Madrid star struck from close range following a goalmouth scramble. Nicklas Bendtner scored twice as Denmark came from a goal down to beat Serbia 31 in Belgrade. The match was played in an empty Partizan stadium because of incidents in a qualifier between Serbia and Albania last month. Serbia was penalized by UEFA for pitch skirmishes involving players and fans over an Albanian flag that was flown above the stadium by a drone. Serbia winger Zoran Tosic opened the scoring with a low strike from 12 yards (meters) in the fourth minute. But Bendtner equalized from close range in the 60th before centerback Simon Kjaer gave the visitors the lead two minutes later by heading in a free kick from Christian Eriksen. Bendtner made it 3-1 in the 85th. France, which has already qualified as the host of Euro 2016, drew 1-1 with Albania in Rennes. Albania defender Mergim Mavraj stunned the hosts with a header in the 40th. But France substitute Antoine Griezmann salvaged a draw by cutting inside to fire into the bottom corner in the 73rd. GROUP D : Thomas Mueller scored twice as Germany got its Euro 2016 qualifying campaign back on track with an unconvincing 40 win over Gibraltar. Mueller opened the scoring in the 12th minute and claimed his second 17 minutes later. Mario Goetze made it 3-0 in the 38th, before an own goal from Yogan Santos completed the scoring in the 67th. Germany coach Joachim Loew said beforehand he wanted a result to reflect his side’s status as the World Cup winners and he started with a very attacking line-up and just three defenders. The home side dominated the game but found it hard to penetrate the visitors’ stubborn defending, especially in the second half. Liam Walker almost scored for Gibraltar with an audacious effort from the sideline just before the interval, only to be denied by a great save from Manuel Neuer. Germany remains three points behind Group D leader Poland, which won 4-0 in Georgia thanks to second half goals from Kamil Glik, LOSS OF IDENTITY CARD LOSS OF ATM CARD LAND ON SALE URGENTLY I have lost my Identity Card issued by the All India Radio (AIR), Imphal on the 12th November 2014 while returning home from duty at around 5:55 PM - 6:10 PM between All India Radio, Imphal and Maringlane, New Checkon - Imphal East. Despite their attacking intent, Delhi Dynamos have scored just seven goals from eight matches and their solid defence was also punctured by FC Goa strikers on Thursday. They now desperately need a win on Sunday to lift the sagging morale after losing thrice in their last four matches. Winless streak : Since thrashing second-place Chennaiyin FC 4-1 in their third match of the tournament here, the Delhi side have been winless for five games and any slip-up on Sunday may cost them dear. Delhi is at the bottom of the eightteam league standings with seven points from one win, four draws and three losses. Kerala Blasters, sixth at the league standings on nine points, have also been an inconsistent side, having won just two matches out of the eight they have played so far, with three draws and as many losses. Semifinal spot : The two sides though are still in contention for a semifinal spot as only five points separate the leader and bottom team. Delhi’s bane has been the lack of goals and their marquee player Alessandro Del Piero’s indifferent form in the seven matches he has played so far has not helped the team. The Italian legend was benched in Delhi’s last match and it will have to be seen what his role will be on Sunday. The two sides will also want to stamp their authority over the other as they had played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg match on November 9 when Delhi’s head coach Harm van Veldhoven was given marching orders for showing dissent at the sidelines against a decision of the referee. Piero’s role : Much had been expected from Del Piero to inspire the team but the 40-year-old has not done much to live up to the expectations though he has got the adulation of the fans wherever he has played. Against Kerala in the first leg match in Kochi on his 40th birthday, he had little to cheer as he got his second booking of the tournament. Sadly for Delhi Dynamos, few players have stood up. Their defence, which was considered rock solid before the match against FC Goa, made mistakes and conceded four goals against the legendary Zico-coached side. Best player : The best player for Delhi Dynamos has been the six feet and 10 inches tall goalkeeper Kristof van Hout of Belgium who has made 32 saves — the best in the league so far — out of the 41 shots he faced. –– PTI Tse/24013-16 I have lost my service ID Card of Havildar 5th MR bearing HAV No. 09941016 issued by Commandant 5th MR on the way between Thangmeiband and 2nd MR on November 14, 2014, Finders are kindly requested to handover to the undersigned.
