Breast Surgery Combined with Tummy Tuck and/or Liposuction
by Charlotte Rhee, MD, F.A.C.S., P.C.
Many of my patients come to me seeking help with the changes that can occur after childbirth. Following childbirth, a woman’s breast can grow to uncomfortable proportions or just the opposite can happen. A woman’s breast can
actually lose volume and shrink, resulting in the breast appearing “deflated.”
Additionally, a large number of women come to me seeking help with the
post partum changes of their abdomen. During pregnancy the skin and abdominal wall muscles are stretched. Following childbirth, the abdomen can
protrude and the skin can be loose or sag. In some cases, the abdominal muscles can be so
weakened that the individual may look like she is still pregnant. Despite daily workouts including
sit ups and crunches, a tummy tuck may be needed to restore these muscles.
ing breast reduction. Both groups of women want to have breasts that are proportional to their
body size with the most natural result possible. In certain situations, a breast lift is also needed
to tighten lax skin. The laxity can be the result of pregnancy or weight loss. When a breast lift
is needed, I utilize the lollipop scar technique. A breast lift procedure is very similar to a breast
reduction. The only difference is that with a breast reduction, breast tissue is removed.
Combined Breast/Tummy Tuck and Liposuction Procedures.
Many of my patients who have breast surgery also have other procedures performed at the
same time. This allows for one surgery and one recovery. The most common combined procedures performed by Dr. Rhee are breast surgery, whether it is a breast reduction or augmentation,
combined with tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty. For those patients

“I’ve struggled with my weight my entire life, “admitted Dr. Raymond Omid. He recalled spending
four or five days at the gym each week. It was time for a new approach.
Because of my dramatic results, my patients began to say “Hey, Doc, whatever you’re doing I want
to do it, too.” Dr. Omid said “To accommodate, he became one of only 12 doctors in the world to
offer the Lighten Up Fat Loss System. According to Dr. Omid, the doctor-supervised system involves
no hunger, no cravings, no necessary exercise, no drugs, and no prepackaged foods to buy, all while
allowing participants to lose 20 to 40 pounds in 40 days.
“This system (helps) balance fat burning hormones,” he said. “All weight gain has a hormonal
component, and everyone has different hormonal imbalances.” He added that most weight-loss
programs are not individualized, which is one reason that they do not work for everyone. The best part
is that we no longer need to guess what’s causing weight loss resistance. The CERF technology tests
5,000 variables including toxins, minerals, and hormones to determine what’s out of balance and how
to bring it back into balance.
To learn more about the program Dr. Omid is offering a complete pre-evaluation for only $27
(normally $150) till the end of January. Call NOW 516-742-8885 to schedule.

Wooster is a rich, friendly socialite, although he self-identifies
as somewhat lacking in the brains department. His stable of
equally rich-but-brainless friends constantly find themselves in
rotten situations, whether they need to win over the loves of
their lives or procure a stipend from a rich, industrious uncle.
Enter Jeeves, Wooster’s valet, or “gentleman’s personal gentleman,” as he would call himself. In addition to a keen fashion sense and a
dry sense of humor, Jeeves possesses a sharp mind (the result of eating a lot
of fish, Wooster asserts) and is always willing to step in to lend a hand. Over
the years, he helped a wayward Wooster cousin find his true calling as a
Broadway singer, rigged a small-town gambling ring that bet on a children’s
carnival, and even saved his employer from the wrath of an angry swan.
The books are generally just as funny today as they were a century
ago, thanks to Wodehouse’s incomparable style and wit (“Hell,” he once
wrote, “has no fury like a woman who wants her tea and can’t get it”).
However, for Wodehouse neophytes, there’s an even easier way to get
involved in the series, and it involves famed British comedy team Stephen
Fry and Hugh Laurie.
If you’ve

Fry and Laurie elevated this good show into something great. Fry,

and incorporated each location into a
number of his stories. In fact, Wodehouse was still living in France when
the Nazis invaded and occupied the
country.
Wodehouse spent the next few
months in Nazi prisons in Belgium
and Poland, but still managed to write
humorous accounts of his time under
German lock and key. A.A. Milne, author of the Winnie the Pooh series,
took this as all the evidence he needed to accuse Wodehouse of being a
Nazi collaborator; Evelyn Waugh and
George Orwell, on the other hand,
defended Wodehouse’s work.
Jeeves and the Wedding Bells is a
story in the classic Wodehouse style,
although the writing is distinctively Faulks. After Wooster falls
head-over-heels in love with a gorgeous woman who has to
marry another man, he and Jeeves journey to Dorset, where
they have the chance to help an old friend untangle his own
romantic woes. However, when Jeeves falls prey to a case
of mistaken identity, the two can’t help but make a mess of
things — and bail themselves back out again.
Although Faulks spins an amusing enough yarn, there is a
certain something missing from his prose. Jeeves and the Wedding Bells
is funny, and it’s easily the kind of storyline that Wodehouse could have
thought up for one of his own novels. However, the book elicits chuckles
instead of belly laughs and wry smiles instead of huge grins.
Jeeves and the Wedding Bells is a good palliative for those who have
already devoured the Wodehouse canon, but readers who are just starting
their adventures with Jeeves and Wooster may want to start with a short
story collection or an episode of the TV series instead. And don’t forget a
stiff b.-and-s. to enhance your enjoyment, what? ●

Finding Colin Firth
by Mia March
It’s cold out there! But that doesn’t mean you can’t be warm
inside. This is the perfect time of year to curl up with a good book.
And what else to warm your spirits than a perfect beach book like Finding Colin
Firth (Simon & Schuster 2013) by Mia March? It tells the story of three very different
women in a coastal Maine town who all have one thing in common—they’re all
affected by the possible arrival of Mr. Darcy himself, none other than Colin Firth,
who’s rumored to be filming a movie in their sleepy little town.
You don’t have to have a thing for Colin Firth (although, why wouldn’t you?!) to
fall in love with this book. Mia’s beautiful writing and well-drawn characters will
move and delight you. And even better, it’s a spin off from her first novel, The Meryl
Streep Movie Club, so you can enjoy that one next!

Dear Dr. Shvartsman,
It was a blessing to work with you, here is why:
I came to your clinic for amalgam fillings removal and it was extremely
important for me that the procedure will be done safely and properly. The
consultation with you was very thorough and you addressed all my concerns
and special needs. The treatment was unparalleled to any dental work I had
experienced in the past.
The treatment was professional, safe and AMAZINGLY PAINLESS!
And one more thing - everybody made sure that I was comfortable and
relaxed throughout the treatment, and you took the time to explain everything
you were doing.
My experience really exceeded my expectations!
Thank you so much.

How To Avoid Root Canals
by Alex Shvartsman, DDS, MAGD, AIAOMT
One of the most dreaded statements a dentist can make is “You need a
Root Canal.” Root Canal Therapy (RCT) more than any other procedure is
associated in the minds of the public with agonizing pain and suffering. Most
people have heard of at least one horror story of suffering before, during and
after root canal therapy. Some have even experienced this for themselves.
In addition, when root canal therapy is done improperly, bacteria and their
toxins are left inside the tooth. Over time, an abscess can form destroying
your jawbone (cavitation) and spreading bacteria through your body. This can
lead to disastrous health consequences, pain, suffering and additional need for treatment and
accompanying cost. So, avoiding RCT should be on everyone’s top 10
list, especially if you are already nervous about going to the dentist.
PREVENTION: Every large filling, crown, root canal or extraction with the exception of trauma or wisdom teeth had its beginnings as a tiny cavity. Avoidance of diagnosis (regular exams by a
dentist or x-rays), delaying of treatment or your dentist lacking of
available modern technology such as decay detecting lasers and
lights can result in a cavity getting so big that the nerve becomes infected. When this happens, root canal therapy becomes unavoidable.
PULP CAPS: placing liners or bases in deep cavities to protects and soothe the nerve
is nothing new. However advances in modern dental materials has made it possible to
perform “pulp caps” in a much more predictable way. New materials such as Resin Modified Calcium Silicate and Mineral Trioxide Aggregate have increased the probability that
pulp caps maintain the vitality of the nerve. These materials disinfect the tooth and release
the building blocks of tooth structure into the nerve and softened dentin to help rebuild
the tooth’s integrity and allow the nerve to heal in a non-toxic environment. In fact, Root
Canal Specialist Dr. Jeffrey Etess in Smithtown Long Island has developed a technique
that predictably helps save children’s adult teeth from needing Root Canals even when
the cavity reaches the nerve. In fact, he is one of the few Endodontists in the country that
comfortably treats children.
BIOMIMETIC DENTISRY: Is the most modern approach to tooth reconstruction based
on the latest science and techniques. Its primary tenet is to rebuild teeth to mimic nature’s
design. Tooth conservation and nerve protection is at he heart of this dental approach.
There are currently a little over 250 Biomimetic Dentists trained at the Alleman-Deliperi
Center for Biomimetic Dentistry and three of them practice in Smithtown, Long Island.
Biomimetic dentistry’s inherent minimally invasive decay removal
approach can save many teeth from root canal therapy.
OZONE: this cousin of oxygen is can selectively kill bacteria while
never harming any human cells. It is now possible, in teeth with a
healthy nerve, to leave deep decay surrounding the nerve, sterilize
it, cover the mineral depleted deep decay with modern pulp cap
materials and place a well sealed, bonded biomimetic filling over
the pulp cap. Dr. Alex Shvartsman has found that this approach has an over 95% success
rate in avoiding the need for Root Canal Therapy.
By following smart and timely prevention practices by having regular check ups and taking advantage of modern technologies, techniques and materials it is possible to avoid
nerve death and the need for Root Canal Therapy.
Dr. Shvartsman is a biomimetic dentist who focuses on minimally invasive and
tooth conserving dentistry. For more information contact Dr. Shvartsman at
State of the Art Comfort Dentistry, 260 E. Main St., Smithtown. 631-361-3577.

As the island’s preeminent book reviewer, Debbi
Honorof is a well-known taste-maker and outspoken
advocate for all things literary. To find the two dozen
books that she will review each year, Debbi reads almost
100 tomes across all genres of writing, and no matter
how awful a book might be she will read it to the
end… but she’ll never trash it with a snarky review. In
her LONG ISLAND WOMAN column, Book Corner, Debbi only
champions the books that she loves and admires, from
the latest national bestsellers to lesser known and/or selfpublished authors from Great Neck to Orient Point.
Debbi’s long list of credentials as the arbiter of what’s
worth reading begins with her first job fresh out of college,
as a roving PR specialist travelling around the world for
Fortune 500 corporations. Marriage and motherhood
brought her to Long Island, where she spent the late
1990s at the Landmark on Main Street in Port Washington
as the founder of its fabled Literary Dialog series.
Debbi’s next move moved was to the Huntington Book
Revue as Events Manager, putting the independent
book store on the map as a “must” stop for celebrity
authors from former president Bill Clinton to the Jersey
Shore’s Snooki.
Since 2007 Debbi has been an innovator in academia
as the Senior Director of Continuing Education at
Hofstra. Her highly popular programs there include
workshops that pair budding writers with established
Long Island authors.
In addition, Debbi is President of the Board of
the Huntington Arts Council. Under her aegis, the
Council is starting a new series of events called Artful
Conversations, bringing creative people together to
generate inspirational insights on life and the arts.
And now you know that you can read her Book
Corner secure in the knowledge that you are being
advised by a Long Island Woman of outstanding culture
and kindness.
Thanks to Judith Mitzner, the residents of Port
Washington don’t have to live in a wasteland, a black hole,
or a cultural wilderness. That’s right: Judith Mitzner owns
the Dolphin Bookshop on the corner of Main Street and
Shore Road, saving her village from the misery of living in a
town without an independent book store. Whew.
These days there is nothing more brave and quirky
than running an independent book store. Which is
why Judith Mitzner is perfectly suited for the task. Her
daring journey from stay-at-home mom to book maven
started when Judith, who home-schooled all three of
her children, graduated her youngest. After filling her
newly acquired free time with major home renovation
projects she needed a new outside interest. So, with a
friend, she made an audacious proposal to Patti Vonk,
then owner of The Dolphin Bookshop, a family-run Port
Washington landmark since it opened in 1946. That’s
how Judith got her first job in bookselling, job-sharing
the supervision of the childrens’ section at The Dolphin.
Fast forward six years: Ms. Vonk is looking to retire
just as Judith is looking for a new challenge. So of
course Judith buys the shop and is taking The Dolphin
into its 7th decade as a beloved Long Island institution.
Even the most erudite and persnickety patrons have
embraced the new “Mitzner Vision” for their dear
Dolphin. Seeing the shop as a community gathering
space, Judith has instituted programs to bring school kids
into the store for reading classes. She also leads a book
club, hosts events for independent authors, and every
Friday evening there is free live music in the new café.
The café is truly the future of The Dolphin. See those
cute baristas serving you your espresso? Those are
second-generation Mitzners, learning the book trade
from their favorite teacher: Mom.
Sheryl Perry has a message for all Long Islanders who
dream of becoming published authors: “Do It Yourself!”
Sheryl Perry founded Long Island Book Publisher just
so she could make writers’ dreams come true. A fierce
advocate for the self-publishing process, Sheryl guarantees
that her writers will retain complete control of their work
and their vision. She does not impose the kind of editorial
domination that a traditional publisher asserts in order to
align a work-in-progress with corporate business goals.
To all writers, Sheryl explains the difference between
herself and traditional publishers with her simple mission
statement: Your dream is not a product.
At Long Island Book Publisher, the writer is the first
and final authority. Your book is all yours.
And there has never been a better time to self-publish
as the industry is being transformed by the internet.
For proof of the power the individual writer has these
days to build a fan base without a publisher acting
as middlemen, look no further than the phenomenal
worldwide success of a self-published book called Fifty
Shades of Grey.
From her North Bellmore base, Sheryl oversees a roster
of Long Island Publisher writers that includes memoirist,
novelists, mystery and fantasy writers, how-to gurus,
poets, and childrens’ book authors.
Sheryl is also a popular public speaker, appearing at
literary events and community gatherings to educate
writers on the outstanding ease and benefits of the selfpublishing movement. Her own distinguished publishing
credentials began to accrue when she was the 19-year
old COO of a private press while still in college. Her
degree in Communications led her to CMP Media in
Manhassett, working in editorial administration for the
business and technology publishing giant. And now
she is living her dream, helping both first-time and
established writers achieve their dreams of creative
independence.

THE LONG ISLAND WOMAN INTERVIEW
by David Lefkowitz
Queen Latifah
Daytime TV is not always known for its grace and uplift.
From “you are not the father” to shrieking contestants to
squawking hosts on The View, daylight-hour television
can sometimes seem like one long ramp up to an Excedrin
headache. Somewhere in the midst of that swirl are the talk
shows, which can veer from spirited to silly to sensationalistic,
sometimes from segment to segment.
New pretenders to the throne of Donahue, Oprah and Ellen appear
every season, but rap star-turned actress-turned TV host Queen
Latifah just might beat the odds – and do it in a kinder, gentler way.
This is not her first go-`round with daytime talk. Her first show, a decade
ago, ran three seasons and featured such episodes as “Girls Who Date
Dangerous Men,” “Sexy Mothers and Daughters Who Compete,” “Women
with Paternity Issues Get Answers” and “All About Breasts.” But even
then, Latifah made an effort to elevate the discourse, with many shows
devoted to combating racism, gang violence and miscarriages of justice
or honoring acts of kindness. Still, last September, she told USA Today, “I
enjoyed the first show… but what it became wasn’t quite what I wanted
it to be. It got a little too heavy, a little too serious. It started to feel like it
wasn’t as `me’ as it should be.”
Her new program, The Queen Latifah Show, appears to be easing even
further in positive directions, with more singing and dancing on her part,
polite and lighter topics, and occasional kooky stunts that she’s always
wanted to try. “I think it’s a testament to some of the needs that needed to
be filled in daytime television,” Latifah told LONG ISLAND WOMAN during our
recent conversation. “In terms of just entertainment, warmth, fun, a little
bit of craziness, useful information – those things we always need.
“I didn’t base this show
on creating controversy or a spirit
of negativity,” continues the former Dana Elaine Owens, who chose
the name “Latifah” (which is Arabic for kind and delicate) from a book
given to her by a Muslim cousin when she was eight. “If anything it was
opposite of that. We need more entertainment and heart and fun. That’s
the space we want to live in. If people want to talk about controversial
subjects, they should be able to freely speak. And if there’s questions that
we need to ask that people are curious about, we should be able to ask those
questions. But everything doesn’t have to be done in a salacious way, you know,
that stirs up controversy intentionally.”
“Positivity” keeps cropping up in Latifah’s description of her show, which also
features “great stories about everyday people who are doing amazing things every
day on the front lines – a message of positivity and hope that we don’t always get
in the news. We get plenty of bad news, but it’s still great to bring some good news
and cool people and fun stuff to people’s sight every day. There’s a lot of great
things going on in the world.”
Certainly it’s been a great journey for a woman who grew up middle-class in
New Jersey, found herself beat boxing and rapping in the late 1980s, leading to
a record deal and eventually a music career that has jumped easily from hip-hop
to jazz and American-songbook standards. Wider audience recognition came via her
acting career, first on such sitcoms as Living Single and a recurring role on The Fresh
Prince of Bel-Air, and later in the films Bringing Down the House, Stranger than
Fiction and the aforementioned Hairspray. The 2002 Oscar-winning film adaptation
of Broadway’s Chicago even netted her an Academy Award nomination for playing
“Mama” Morton, queen of the jailhouse.
Unlike some of her early musical peers, Latifah was far from a candidate for
prison herself, though she did get booked for pot and gun possession in 1996 and
was given three years probation following a DUI in 2002. “There’s no such thing as
a perfect show, a perfect host, a perfect person – for that matter,” says Latifah. “So
nobody is going to do the right thing all the time. People make mistakes, and that
just has to be something that’s accepted. If we can deal with that reality, then I think
everything will be fine.”
So far, Latifah has enjoyed fine luck booking name guests, from Carol Burnett to
Hairspray costar John Travolta to Will Smith (who, with his wife Jada Pinkett Smith,
executive produces the program). Latifah notes that improving her interviews has been
her biggest “learning curve” so far. “I’m much more used to being the one answering
the question as opposed to posing the questions that we ask our guests,” Latifah
explains, adding that studio-audience members also enjoy interacting with her and
the guests. “People feel very comfortable around me. And they feel comfortable just
responding and with a lot of our guests – who they’ve known through television or
film or their career – for a long time. So they may ask a question or make a comment
as if we’re all, you know, buddies. Obviously, we have to edit some of it so that it works
for our viewing audience at home. But our audience has been great, and our guests
have been fantastic.”
Asked if she’s had a favorite guest so far, Latifah replies that Cloris Leachman was
“one of the most fun ones.” The octogenarian actress brought her daughter on the
show, and both prepared a vegetarian dish. “We got the inside joke that (Leachman)
was going to do whatever she wanted to do that day,” recalled Latifah. “So it was kind
of funny trying to structure that for the TV audience. But it was so much fun – and I
think we were able to translate that.”
When asked what she might do if she, herself, were a guest on her own show, the
host laughs and answers, “I would let her wear sneakers, first of all. And I would allow
her to wear her jeans and her sneakers so she can be comfortable and not show off her
fly shoes for everyone. And she could do everything from rap to DJ to go to the gun
range to taking a ride on her motorcycle and trying to do an interview like that. We’d
also talk about some serious topics that might be on all of our minds as Americans
and citizens of the world.”
Regarding her appeal to
a surprisingly wide cross
section of races and genders,
Latifah notes, “I guess that’s
the absolute truth. My father
taught me that `when in
Rome, do as the Romans’
kind of thing, so every place I With Will

I was curious about the world;
I’m curious about people.
So maybe it’s given me an
understanding of people, to
a degree, and it’s made me
comfortable in my own skin.
I’m okay being judged among
my own people, let alone
other people. I allow myself
the freedom to change and
become whoever I want to be.
“Maybe part of it is the fact
that I’m a black woman,” continues Latifah, “but I grew up in a family that was very
multi-cultural. I had a Filipino aunt, I had a white aunt, you know? I mean I had a
couple interracial couples in my family. I had gay people in my family. I had people
who were on the right side of the law, people who were on the wrong side of the law.
I had sober people, I had drug-addicted people. Square people and cool people and
everything in between in my own family that I was exposed to at a young age. So
many different kinds. I’ve found when you’re exposed to different things, you tend to
open up your world and your lens gets wider. At the end of the day people are people.”
Latifah has been steadfast in maintaining the privacy of her private life. Yes, people
have long speculated that her friendships with fitness trainer Jeanette Jenkins and,
currently, choreographer Eboni Nichols, are more than BFF acquaintanceships, and
GLBT activists jumped for joy when Latifah spoke at a 2012 gay pride rally and called
the crowd “her people.” But the actress was quick to deny making any statement about
her sexuality one way or another. “I’ve never dealt with the question of my personal life
in public,” she said at the time. “It’s just not gonna happen. To me, doing a gay pride
show is one of the most fun things, (and) my first show that paid more than $10,000
was in a gay club on New Year’s Eve in San Francisco. Tupac (Shakur) happened to be
in town, so he came to kick it with me. This was the early ’90s. And the boys were like,
‘Take your shirt off, Tupac!’ He wasn’t doing that. But we had a blast in there.”
Asked by LONG ISLAND WOMAN about her idols and influences over the years, Latifah
waxes almost rhapsodic. “Oh, there have been so many, so many through the years
that have shared their wisdom with me. I loved watching Pearl Bailey on TV. I loved
watching - one of the guests I just had the other day, Carol Burnett, who came on
the show. You know, her ability to be an actress of such variety and comedy and
singing, showed me that there’s no barriers, and Pearl Bailey did the same thing. Teena
Marie influenced me musically, and so did MC Lyte for that matter, as did Salt-n-Pepa,
Boogie Down Productions. People like them gave me wisdom early along the way. Alfre
Woodard, Angelina Jolie, Sharon Stone – everyone that I worked with, they shared a
bit with me, taught me.
Continues the actress-host, “Different directors showed me different ways of using
my skills. My director, Ellen
Gittelsohn, who also directed
Living Single and first directed
me on The Fresh Prince of BelAir, was one of the people
who took me under her wing
and kind of showed me the
ropes. I was a rapper. I knew
nothing about being a sitcom
actress, really. She showed
me simple things like how
to hit a mark and timing and
where the cameras would
be. I had to learn things from
the ground up – and quick.
I’m a quick study, thankfully.
But I’ve learned a lot from
people through the years.
Even my agent, Randy, and
my business partner, Shakim
(Compere), have taught me
so much and been such big
influences. But ultimately, my
mom is the biggest influence
on me because if she’s cool
with things, then I’m cool
with it. And she always has
some wisdom to share with
me – even in my toughest
moments.”
“People feel very
comfortable around me.”
THE LONG ISLAND WOMAN INTERVIEW
Latifah’s mother, Rita Owens, has been a
constant in her adult life, so it was a relief to
hear the actress say that recent reports of her
mom’s ill health were blown out of proportion
by the tabloids. “My mama’s good,” Latifah
says. “That report in the National Enquirer was
completely incorrect; my mom is not fighting
lung cancer. And that’s why you can’t believe
the shit you read – excuse my language. So
we’re gonna deal with them on that! But yes,
my mom’s been doing pretty good (sic). She has
been facing some medical challenges, and she’s
been doing pretty well. So she’s here with me
and I see her every day. She watches the show
every day, and she tells me the shows she really
likes and ways that I could get better. So she’s
still in my corner and holding me down.”
As for Latifah’s own health, she credits the
TV show with reminding her of the importance
of being diligent. “There’s a lot of takeaway,”
she explains. For instance, I got a mammogram
on Friday – the first one I’ve ever had. I was
scheduled to do this a long time ago, but
because I’ve been working so much, it just got
away from me. I had to be honest about that
on television, and the only reason I shared it
was because I felt maybe other people have

and be whoever I want to be.”
busy schedules and have let something really
important like this get away from them. So just
taking that step, having Dr. Kristi Funk (who did
Angelina’s double mastectomy) on, and talking
about that reminded me that I had to do it.
So I called my gynecologist and got it done.
Everything is clear; everything is great. And I
think the show was a motivation for me to get
more conscious about my own health.”
It’s clear that finding a balance between work
and life, while developing even further comfort
with the studio audience and viewers at home,
will be the goal of Latifah’s first season in talk.
“I live life in the real world,” she states. “And I
think I’ve probably been through a lot of things
that people have been through that want to
come on the show. So there is a relatability,
and it’s really just a matter of translating that
to the audience that’s watching. It’s about
just being really comfortable – a comfortable
chair, a comfortable outfit – things that allow
me to relax and not think about what I’m
wearing, what I’m doing. Just to enjoy the
person that I’m speaking to or enjoy the games
we’re playing or the musical performances or
human-interest stories that we get into – really
connecting with people.” ❉

Massage vs. Workout: What’s the Best Option for You?
C
hances are your time is limited, but let’s say you have a free hour. You
know that working out will make your body feel and look good, but you
may be surprised to learn that you can reap a host of health benefits by
simply lying down—and getting a relaxing massage.
In fact, both exercise and massage confer a host of physical and psychological benefits to the people who engage in these activities. Here’s the
scoop on how you can improve your health whether you’re working out
your muscles—or simply having someone work on them for you:
The Surprising Benefits of Massage
Think massage just feels good? Think again. There are dozens of studies
that prove that massage produces a variety of health benefits. Massage
has been proven to help reduce the pain associated with conditions ranging from migraines to arthritis to fibromyalgia, says Tiffany Field, PHD,
founder and director of the Touch Research Institute in Miami. But massage goes beyond simply easing pain. In one recent study, migraine sufferers who received massages had fewer headaches, were less stressed and
slept more deeply than those who didn’t receive massages. Massage also
helps lower blood pressure, relieves pain and anxiety, and can produce a
feeling of general well-being.
Most people think of Swedish massage but there are a variety of different types to choose from, including:
UÊDeep tissue. Usually focusing on one specific area, this intense massage isn’t for everyone. It uses heavy finger pressure and slow strokes to
help ease tension.
UÊShiatsu. While often called “massage,” this actually refers to a healing therapy that involves finger pressure along the body’s meridians, or
pathways. Applying pressure to specific places along these pathways is
believed to restore energy, or “chi,” which helps with healing.
UÊSwedish. Arguably the best-known type of massage in the Caribbean,
this popular massage involves several types of strokes. The most commonly used, effleurage, are long strokes along muscles that are applied in
the direction of the heart.
UÊTrigger point. This type of massage involves applying pressure to specific painful areas, which then relaxes other areas of the body.
Of course, just as there are different types of massage, masMassage helps
sages therapists vary in terms of their experience and aplower blood
proach. If you’re looking for a massage therapist, ask a friend
for a referral or ask at your local spa or health club for a recompressure,
mendation. Inquire about the therapist’s experience and trainrelieves pain
ing and the type of massage he/she provides, as well as rates.
Let them know about any health problems you’re having, and
and anxiety,
then just lie back and relax.
and can
produce a
feeling of
general wellbeing.
Work Out for your Body and your Mind
If exercise came in a pill, everyone would want to take it
for its multitude of health benefits. If you work out regularly,
you are less likely to develop high cholesterol, diabetes, high
blood pressure, heart disease, and many kinds of cancer than
sedentary folks. You’re also more likely to maintain your agility, strength, and bone density as you age—as well as your
22r-0/(*4-"/%80."/rMarch 2014
brainpower. Exercise improves circulation, including the all-important
blood flow to your brain. Regular activity helps you maintain a healthy
weight (or lose extra pounds if you need to), and improves your overall
physique. Plus there are psychological benefits—working out improves
mood, reduces anxiety, produces sounder sleep, and makes it easier to
manage stress.
Good enough. But how much exercise do you need to be healthy? In
general, a little is a lot better than nothing, but aim for 30 minutes of
moderate-intensity exercise five days a week, along with two days of muscular-strengthening exercise (like weight lifting or toning moves) a week,
per the American College of Sports Medicine recommendations. The latter will help you maintain muscle and bone mass, which reduces your risk
of osteoporosis and helps you prevent age-related weight gain.
Your cardiovascular workout might be a jog, swim, or bike, working hard enough to break a sweat. Shoot for 30 minutes, but even a
10-minute session will boost your mood and benefit your health. For your
strength-training sessions, you needn’t hit the gym—even simple moves
like pushups, crunches, squats and lunges will challenge your muscles
and give you a toned, sleeker profile. Just give yourself 48 hours between
strengthening sessions to let your muscles recover.
The bottom line? Whether you choose exercise or massage, each will
help improve your health and give you a boost. Or why not get the best
of both worlds and work out first—and then treat yourself to a massage
afterwards? ●

Men aren’t the only ones who lose their hair. For a woman, causing hair loss include hypothyroidism, hyperandrogenism (excessive male horhair loss and thinning can be horribly embarrassing, emotionally mones), other hormonal conditions, anemia (low blood count), medication-induced,

Neighbors…sometimes they can become your best friends!
T
hey say who you move next door to is akin to karma…a random, throw-ofthe-dice happening that connects you to people in unique ways. Your neighbors can drive you mad, be a lifesaver in time of need or become your closest
friends. While sometimes the age difference can be broad, that’s the magic of
proximity. Whether it’s carpooling, sharing a cleaning service or chairing a community event, friendships have been born on the block that lasted, even after
one of the neighbors moved away.
Shared Space
Who would have thought that a chance meeting in
a laundry room would develop into a 20-year friendship? Liz Dallas who worked for a jewelry designer
had just moved from Brooklyn to a co-op in Lynbrook.
One night, she met Misty, a Wall Street executive, in
the laundry room and they became fast friends. “We
just clicked. It started out gradually…going out for
coffee, just hanging out, then shopping and traveling
together.”
“We’ve lived it all during our friendship… love,
heartbreak, love again, deaths and the most evil of
them all, cancer,” said Liz. “We do refer to ourselves
as Lucy and Ethel. Our parts change depending on
who comes up with the plan. We just look at each
other and laugh or cry depending on what the situation merits. It‘s mostly laughing, even if the situation
calls for tears.” Liz moved away first to Levittown and
Misty relocated to Oceanside. Even though they’re no
longer neighbors, they both still live on Long Island
Liz and Misty
and remain best of friends. “We lost our fathers the
same month, a year apart. Having each other was a great support system for
both of us.”
Kids Bring Neighborhoods Together
Previous to moving to East Hills in Roslyn, Dr. Alice Laser lived in Jericho and
New York City. She and her husband, Jordan, also a physician, chose this community because they had many friends here and her children’s friends lived
close by. In addition, she loved the many amenities this close knit, family-oriented community offered such as the private pool and park. She feels the phrase,
“it takes a village” really holds true here.
Alice wanted to remain in East Hills and had her eye on a house on a street
where four of her good friends lived, which would have been perfect for her.
Unfortunately that house sold before she could bid on it, but she is confident
that another house on that street will become available. “We all have kids in
the same age group that do the same after school activities and have play
dates. I really look forward to living on a street filled with all of my and my kids’
friends!”
Getting to Work
David DeAngelis met Stephen while taking the bus from his apartment in
Queens to the subway. It turned out they both worked in advertising, so they
had a lot to talk about on their morning commute. Then they discovered they
lived in the same building and shared a courtyard, which made it even more
conducive to their budding friendship. Dave’s wife, Wendy, an early childhood
music educator, was introduced to Stephen and they all became fast friends.
“When Dave and I met Stephen, he was single. But soon afterwards, he started
dating Mary, who would become his wife. It was very sweet to see them become a couple. We’ve celebrated many milestone events with them over the
years and watched their children grow up. While we now live in Port Washington and they live in New Hyde Park, we still share the holidays and each other’s
celebrations.” Wendy continued, “Knowing Stephen and Mary have also enriched our lives by learning about their many Asian customs and traditions. To
think, it all started at the bus stop.”
Age Differences Bridge the Gap
Family Connections
Sharon Ritz of Roslyn knew about her neighbor, Andrea, even before she
moved in because their mothers knew each other and introduced them. “Since
we had kids the same ages, it was natural that we would become friends…and
it was great to have her so close by,” says Sharon. “We became good friends
rather quickly. The street we lived on, Holly Lane, was a very spe“We just

Many times there’s a range in age among neighbors, but when a pipe bursts
in the middle of the night, or there’s a power failure and your neighbor has a
back-up generator, all of that dissipates as she comes to your rescue.
“Sometimes when there is a substantial difference in age, transference can
take place. Our next-door neighbor becomes the good enough mother - there
when you need her, nurturing, giving, but not controlling,” says Dr. Linda
Goluboff, a psychologist in private practice in Great Neck. She continues, “In
return, the ‘child’ neighbor is unconditionally accepted and loved for his/her
goodness. Paradoxically, fences, boundaries and petty annoyances, can be released without a threat to greater intimate relationships.”
How to Turn Neighbors into Friends
In her article, “Becoming Friends with your Neighbors: How to Develop
Friendships with People who Live Near You,” author Cherie Burbach suggests
several way to take your relationship to the next level. Begin by inviting your
neighbor out of coffee, a farmer’s market or community event. Make it casual.
Do something nice. Bring over baked goods, flowers or let her know about a
special sale at a local store. Look for small ways to be kind and a friendship will
eventually develop. To read more, go to: friendship.about.com/od/MeetingNew-Friends/a/Becoming-Friends-With-Your-Neighbors.htm.

Catching Up with Carol

Judy Martin
I
t’s hard to find the best place to start, to tell you the real story of Judy
Martin.
Judy died suddenly January 31st, leaving behind a heartbroken mother,
father, sister, niece and a stepmom too. I count myself among those
aching as one of Judy’s friends. And as the days go on, I am blown away
by the legions weighing in as part of her extended family, “the family she
chose.”
I met Judy in 1988 when she joined the News 12 family. She was a
Baldwin High School and New York Institute of Technology graduate who
grew into an Emmy award winning writer, reporter and anchor. Judy the
journalist covered stories from Hurricane Andrew in Florida, to Kosovo,
Avianca and September 11th. She also was an intrepid blogger, and wrote
for publications including Forbes, the Wall Street Journal and Huffington
Post. Plus she appeared on NPR and CNBC. Judy was also a motivational
speaker, certified to teach mediation and yoga and was finishing her
certification to become a counselor.
But that’s the least of it.
Judy was always spiritual, but her months spent at Ground Zero
deepened that. In the chaotic, desperate search for
survivors, human remains, and a reason for the tragedy,
She had a
Judy saw opportunity. She wrote in Forbes, “We all know

our perception, our behavior and our thoughts.” She

witnessed the personal toll on fellow journalists, consumed

by having to tell daily stories of their generation’s greatest
heartache. Judy was drawn to managing their “workto plant

passion in us. Judy began with a personal mission of service. It took
her away from journalism for a decade. For eight of those

years she lived in an ashram. Her new work was caring for and holding
children, then adults in hospice, as they died of AIDS and cancer. One of
Judy’s best friends, News 12 anchor Lea Tyrrell, says Judy believed no one
should die alone.
Ten years later Judy was ready to take what she’d learned to the larger
world. Service. Everyone is important. And stop to take a breath.
Judy returned to News 12, and started all that writing and blogging, while
still volunteering. And reporting. Twice she lived with Lea’s family. “Aunt
Judy” was soft with Lea’s young daughter Victoria. But Aunt Judy was never
shy about challenging us all to live a little better the next day. Says Lea, “She
always wanted you to think twice about the life you were living, and not
to take it for granted. And always breathe. She’d say you could learn great
things about yourself and your life when you stopped to breathe.”
Then she’d go change the world.
News 12’s News Director Pat Dolan calls Judy “a free spirit.” An
understatement.
Alan Goodman was her Executive Producer for years. “To be frank, Judy
lived life like most of us wish we could: free, without regret – and she had
a passion for people.”
That’s the real Judy story. She had a passion for people. And she lived to
plant that seed of passion in us.
Judy was a part of my family too. My son called
from college, upset by her passing, because he felt
there was nothing he could do. “Not true,” I told
him. “Just go and do something good for someone
today. Just live like Aunt Judy.” ●
