Bread for the World Benefit Con cert – Febr uary 22 n d Throughout the Scriptures, God speaks of our purpose to rebuild, restore, and renew all that is broken (Isaiah 61). We are called to work to end the brokenness of hunger and poverty in our communities, in our country, and in the world. We know that with God’s help, we can end widespread hunger once and for all. We cannot end hunger by ourselves. We need God. It is hard to imagine the United States getting more serious about ending hunger unless we are moved by the grace of God to insist on it. We live in the world's wealthiest nation. Yet 14% of U.S. households—a total of 49.1 million Americans, including 15.8 million children—struggle to put food on the table. More than one in five American children are at risk of hunger. We can end hunger in our time. When you give a gift to Bread for the World, its impact is multiplied. For every dollar you donate, Bread for the World helps win more than $100 in assistance for hungry and poor people in the United States and around the world. On Sunday, February 22nd the renowned Victor Simonson - Washington, DC based music director, composer, arranger, keyboardist, organist, orchestrator and Minister of Music; Lindsay Roberts – national Porgy and Bess tour performer and mezzo soprano; and Frank Mitchell international classical opera performer and bass baritone, are joining the efforts to end hunger. National Freedom Day Did you know that February 1st is National Freedom Day? On this date in 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed the 13th amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery in the United States. Although this amendment was not ratified by the states until later, February 1st will always stand as the date this document was signed, outlawing slavery throughout the entire United States. Major Richard R. Wright, a former enslaved American living in Philadelphia, led a movement to celebrate Lincoln's signing of the 13th amendment. In 1948, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming February 1st as National Freedom Day. Major Wright led the first commemoration, which took place on February 1, 1942, at Independence Hall. A wreath was laid at the Liberty Bell on that day. This tradition continues to this day. 13 S i c k & S h u t - in M e m b e r s & F r i e n d s Ida Porter Mrs. Helen Brown Abington Memorial Hospital Roxborough Hospital BELL, Mr. Bruce & Mrs. Inez 5879 Griscomb Avenue, Bensalem, PA 19020 . . . 215-757-7994 BRIDDELL, Mrs. Elizabeth 1815 Manton St, Philadelphia, PA 19146 . . . 215-468-4405 BROWN, Mrs. Helen 539 Conarroe Street, Philadelphia PA 19128 . . . 215-483-0394 CARTER, Mrs. Queenie 8124 Thouron Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19150 . . . 215-248-0720 CUNNINGHAM, Deaconess Hardenia 6225 N. 17th Street, Philadelphia PA 19141 . . . 215-548-6340 DAVENPORT, Mrs. Tina 2866 Joyce Road, Abington PA 19001 . . . 215-366-7915 *DRAYTON, Ms. Ollie 7220 Limekiln Pike, Philadelphia, PA 19046 FAIRFAX, Trustee John 7763 Mellon Road, Wyncote, PA 19025 . . . 215-886-0006 *FONTANILLA, Dr. Rodolfo 707 Dominion Drive, Moorestown, NJ 08054 GIBBS, Mr. Andre 910 E Phil Ellena Street, Philadelphia, PA 19150 . . . 215-620-4766 GREAVES, Ms. Moreen 6330 Crescentville Road, Philadelphia PA 19120, 215-927-6892 HARDING, Mrs. Ella 6300 Old York Road, #204, Philadelphia PA 19141 . . . 215-924-1146 *HARRIS, JR., Mr. Morris 117 Colin Powell Drive, Glassboro, NJ 08028 *HILL, Mr. John 120 Gable Road, Paoli, PA 19301 INGRAM, III, Mr. John 1119 Princeton Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19111 . . . 215-725-5692 JAMISON, Mr. Emanuel 7209 Mansfield Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19138 . . . 215-424-2023 JEFFRIES, Mrs. Dorothy 1813 W.
