Top 5 questions you may have about Salem Baptist Church’s COMFORT CARE SUPPORTER
PROGRAM: (1) Why is Salem partnering to establish a Comfort Care Supporter Program? (2)
What is the goal of the Comfort Care Support Program and whom will it target? (3) What does a
Comfort Care Supporter do? (4) Who is eligible to be a Comfort Care Supporter? (5) How do I
become a Comfort Care Supporter? Join us on Sunday, November 9, 2014 immediately after the
10:00 am service in FLC Acts Suite @ 12:15 and Dr. Johnson and Tara Hayden will be available to
provide interested members with information and to answer questions about the Program.
COMFORT CARE SUPPORTERS . . . People of faith believe that they do not have to suffer alone
because God is the source of all comfort. While there is recognition that there is a need to support
and comfort people at the end of life (EOL), most people and churches struggle with the best way
to support congregants who have a life-limiting illness as well as supporting their family members
and loved ones. Salem Baptist Church will be participating in an education, training, and research
program with Dr. Jerry Johnson and Tara Hayden of the University of Penn. During the course of
their research and professional experiences, Dr. Johnson and Ms. Hayden have been told by many
that if the support comes, it comes too late or it does not respond to some of the major causes of
distress for persons with life illnesses and their families. As a result of their experiences, they have
initiated a program to provide support and comfort to those who have life-limiting illness earlier
rather than later. In one component of the program, members of the Salem have the opportunity to
be trained as Comfort Care Supporters, providing new knowledge and skills that will allow them
to support church members. If you are interested in volunteering to participate in this program,
please contact Fredericka Waugh at [email protected] to discuss the eligibility criteria and
requirements for participation and make applications available.
All Auxiliaries and members are invited to SERVE THE HOMELESS AT CHOSEN 300 on the 4th
Saturday of each month.
