1. Introduction
Scientist,
academicians and librarians around the world are trying to learn what web
discovery tools and services are and how they work. By now, we Scientist, academicians
and librarians are familiar with the single-line form, the consolidated index, which
represents a very large portion of a library’s print and online collection. Our end users
certainly are familiar with the idea of a single search across a comprehensive index that
produces a large, relevancy-ranked results list. Even though most patrons would not
recognize the term web-scale discovery (WSD), it is what they have come to expect. More
and more libraries are stepping up to meet their users’ expectations by implementing WSD
services. Scientist, academicians and librarians around the world are trying to learn what
these services are and how they work, evaluating the services on the market, selecting and
implementing a service, and then teaching colleagues and patrons all about it. Web-scale
discovery services are the tools that search seamlessly across a wide range of local and
remote content and provide relevance-ranked results that have the ambitious goal of
providing a single point of entry into a library’s collections.
These Web scale discovery
services have major potential to transform the nature of library systems. These services
are capable of searching quickly and seamlessly across a vast range of local and remote
content and providing relevancy-ranked results in the type of intuitive interface that
today’s information seekers expect. The four major vendors are OCLC, EBSCO, ProQuest,
and Ex Libris. Ideally all possible online content providers are indexed, as well as the
library’s local holdings. After four years of development, these products have come close to
this ideal, but gaps persist. Discovery services face complex challenges. For example, to
accommodate the concerns of proprietary-content providers, discovery services must
differentiate publicly available search results from content offered only to authenticated
users. In addition, access to resources must be aligned with each library’s subscription and
database selections. Discovery services only allow access to resources that a library is
authorized to use through paid subscriptions, open access licenses, or the public domain.
Often a library is a subscriber to both the discovery service and the content resource,
allowing the best results.
Database publishers tend to make their materials available to
discovery service providers to improve access and increase usage statistics, thus
encouraging library renewals. In many cases, the full text of e-journal articles and other
content is indexed along with the basic metadata required to retrieve citations.
In this direction the present workshop training will enlighten the social scientists/ scholars,
librarians related to maximise the use of online resources for their academic, and research
activities.
2. Workshop Theme Coverage
The theme of the workshop relates to providing an overview of web discovery tools,
services and their importance in the web world. The areas like OAI & IR would be focused.
This would be done with emphasis on intensive hands-on-practice. Within the main theme
the content coverage will be –

 Commercially available Web Discovery Tools
 Web Discovery Tools available through Open Source
 Design and development of Web Discovery tools
 Installation of Web Discovery Tools
 Workflow Web Discovery Tools
 Impact of Web discovery Tools and on academic and research world
 And others

5. Training workshop Methodology
The programme pedagogy consists of a mix of lectures, demonstration & hands-on
practice.
6. Expected Participants: Scientist, Research Scholars, Faculty, Information
Scientists/ Information Managers / Librarian/ Persons working/ in libraries &
Information Centres.
7. Fee: The participation is free of cost. The training workshop is sponsored by
ICSSR-NASSDOC, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India,
New Delhi.
8. Accommodation: The out station participants will get free accommodation in
the RS Hostel at our campus.
9. About Organisers
ICSSR: Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) was established in the
year 1969 by the Government of India to promote research in Social Sciences in
the country.
NASSDOC: National Social Science Documentation Centre (NASSDOC) is a
documentation unit of ICSSR is organising short term training workshops for over
30 years for information professionals, researchers and others working in
academia, business and government in the social science sector. The training
workshops provide an easy way to refine the information locating skills of the target
group.
Birla Institute of Technology (BIT): For over five decades, BIT-Mesra (located
16 KMs from Ranchi, the Jharkhand state-Capital) has been engaged in nurturing
