St. Bede Episcopal Church Port Orchard, WA Our Newsletter The Venerable Bede "The Tidings" March, 2015 Special Events LENT SOUP SUPPERS AND PROGRAM Wednesdays at 6:00pm FAMILY KITCHEN - Monday, March 23 MAKING PALM CROSSES - Saturday, March 28 at 10am PALM SUNDAY - MARCH 29 1 VICAR’S MESSAGE Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, I’ve called this series “Finding ourselves…” but I want to acknowledge that we are not lost. We may be standing in exactly the same place but find that the world has shifted around us. If the passage of time is a constant than even if we occupy the same point in space, our perspective will be shifted by changes that occur around us over time. To put it another way, even if we think we are staying the same, our relationship to the rest of the world changes as time goes on. This may seem an obvious or insignificant observation, but as we begin a new chapter in our life together as St Bede’s, it’s worth taking stock of who we are in this very minute: When Jesus went into the wilderness to pray, he was assaulted by temptation but emerged with a clear sense of identity and purpose. Let’s journey together, find ourselves, and rise up together with renewed purpose alongside our resurrected Lord. Blessings, The Rev. Canon Arienne Davison 2 LENT SOUP SUPPERS AND PROGRAM Wednesdays at 6:00pm During this holy season of Lent we gather to learn and practice our faith together. Each Wednesday we will: o Gather for food fellowship at 6pm o Study and learn more about ourselves as Christians and as the People of St Bede's. o Pray together 3 CAMP HUSTON THREE WEEKS LEFT TO RECEIVE EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT of $45 off per camper before March 15 4 PARISH NURSES Wholesome Foods to Power Your Mind and Body These days, we are bombarded with the term “superfoods.” The marketers want you to believe that superfoods are brand new, something truly extraordinary that you have been missing out on all these years. But here is what is super about food. Virtually all whole foods offer you something of nutritional value. The secret to sound nutrition is to eat as wide a variety of wholesome foods as possible each day. If you find yourself in a food rut – eating the same thing day after day, there is nothing super about that. You need a wide variety of foods to fight disease, maintain organ function, to be mentally clear, alert and energetic. A few of the many wholesome foods include: Berries: Red/purple color means high degree of flavonoids. Berries are low in calories and rich in fiber. Green vegetables: High in antioxidant power, fiber and iron. Beans/legumes: Rich in fiber, high in protein and a good alternative to meat. In your local supermarket – aim for the perimeter. The wholesome foods are found in the produce, dairy, meat and seafood departments. That is where you will find the food that is super. Ken and Mary Hulet, Parish Nurses 5 LIFT YOUR VOICE AND SING !! The St. Bede's choir is a dedicated and loyal group. I enjoy working with them and we do work well. You may have noticed that we have been few in number over the past several weeks. Despite this fact our group has pushed on well. A choir is a team and each singer "plays" a position. If one person cannot come to practice or church, for whatever reason, the position remains empty unless we have singers able to sing in any part. Think football. We are recruiting bass, tenor, alto and soprano voices. If even one part is missing the product is incomplete. Singing in the choir is an act of stewardship to praise God. It is a time and talent offering with no cost attached. If you are wondering what to do for Lent, here it is. Instead of giving up something, why not add something? TIME: During Lent only - Wednesday, 5:00 - 6:00pm Practice (This allows for soup supper and evening program) - Sunday - 9:00am Practice; 10:00 am Service After Easter - Wednesday, 6:30-8:00pm Practice - Sunday - 9:00am Practice; 10:00 am Service TALENT: Do you sing in the shower? Can you hear, sing on tune, count, follow direction, have an 'I sang in the high school chorus' experience, or just like music? Then this is for you. Yes, we do have room for you and we'd love to have you. If you want to just visit or try us out, just come. If you have more questions, call Judy Gregg - 253-884-5483, or Dee Finkbeiner - 360-895-0374. 6 ST. Thank you for allowing us the funds to support such worth-while programs. If you have a favorite charity we haven't mentioned, please bring it to our attention so we may consider funding it. We had a great time at Glen's 80th Birthday party. There was a lot of cake, ice cream and other goodies. He received a good donation to ERD75, which is our Diocesan project this year. Glen sends his "THANKS". Soup-er Bowl Sunday went very well. We took 40 cans of soup to Helpline and $35.00. There were other goods as well, for a total of 117 pounds. They always tell us how grateful they are for St. Bede's help and support. At this writing, we have not yet celebrated "Soapy Sunday", but we're sure lots of soap was donated and will be well received. March is Lent, and so will be much quieter than February. We will be doing a small project but it will be announced later. In the mean time, remember that we ARE the hands of Christ. May we always be willing to do his work. I finally became completely silent. I started to listen which is even further removed from speaking .... I first thought that praying entailed speaking. I then learned that praying is hearing, not merely being silent. That is how it is, To pray does not mean to listen to oneself speaking, Prayer involves becoming silent, And being silent, And waiting until God is heard. - Soren Kierkegaard. 11 TIDINGS Published monthly by St. Bede Episcopal Church 1578 SE Lider Rd.
