Monsignor’s Message for the Week
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen as we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord. It
is always a pleasure to welcome you and especially our guests to the spiritual home of the
Catholics of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
Fr. Andrew DeFusco and I wish you and your family a Blessed Easter. May the hope of this
day – that God’s love for us is even stronger than death – be a source of encouragement and
strength as we walk the way of discipleship. Know that you are always welcome at the
Cathedral.
Sincerely,
Msgr. Richard Woy
Parish Center Easter Closing
The Parish Center will be closed on Good Friday, April 3rd and Easter Monday, April 6th.
Msgr. Woy and the Cathedral staff would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter! The office will
re-open on Tuesday, April 7th at 9:00AM.
Through your generous support of the 2015 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, our parish community follows Pope Francis’ encouragement to become missionary disciples as we support ministries at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen that bring to life the Gospel message across our community. If you have yet to
make a pledge to the 2015 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, please complete a pledge form, available in the
back of the Church, or visit www.archbalt.org. Thank you for your prayers and support.

The Service Committee will host Sunday's social after the 8:30AM Mass in the Undercroft.
Music Notes
Alleluia! Today, as we celebrate Easter, we include a special piece of music, the sequence. In the Middle Ages, it became
expected practice at Mass to extend the music for the Alleluia to cover the time that it would take for the deacon
to process from the altar to the ambo before proclaiming the Gospel. These extended melodies were called jubilus because of their joyful tone. Eventually, these melodies became long enough that people started to put
words to them. In the ninth century, Notker Balbulus created a collection where he called them sequences, perhaps because the words provided a way to memorize the sequence of notes or because these chants followed in order
the Alleluia.
After the Council of Trent, only four sequences were preserved in the liturgy: Victimae paschali laudes for today, Veni
Sancte Spiritus for the feast of Pentecost, Lauda Sion for Corpus Christi, and Dies Irae for the Requiem Mass. In 1727,
Pope Benedict XVIII added the Stabat Mater as the sequence for the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The text for the
Easter sequence has often attributed to Wipo of Burgundy, an eleventh century priest and chaplain to the Holy Roman
Emperor Conrad II, but it has also been attributed to Notker Balbulus, Robert II of France, and Adam of St. Victor. It
is uncertain if Wipo also wrote the melody.
While the most recent revision to the Roman Missal places the sequence before the Alleluia, singing the chant gives us
an additional chance today to reflect on the Resurrection. Notice how the lyrics tell the story of the empty tomb and
prepare us to hear the Good News. As this song is only sung for the first week of Easter, it may not be so familiar to
you, but as an expected part of the celebration of Easter, it is a staple that will return year after year.
Happy Easter,
Glenn

Reading Center
CareNotes can be found at the Parish Center or on the Reading Center rack at the north side door of
the Church. These small pamphlets offer hope to those who have lost a loved one, are coping with
anxiety, depression, addiction, or dealing with illness. Please feel free to take the ones you need, but we
do ask for a donation of $1 each to defray the cost. Place envelopes marked “CARENOTES” in the
votive light money boxes or in the collection basket.
ATTENTION ALL CMOQ VOLUNTEERS: The Archdiocese has adopted
a new online system called Shield the Vulnerable for registering all volunteers
in the Archdiocese. If you have not already done so, please go to
www.shieldthevulnerable.org and register as a volunteer at the Cathedral of
Mary Our Queen. When asked to select an organization, choose “Catholic Dioceses” and then
“Baltimore Archdiocese.” When prompted, enter your contact information and create a login-ID and
password. In response to the question about “affiliation,” choose “volunteer with substantial contact.”
Providing a safe environment for the children of our parish has always been the highest priority for the
Cathedral. Thank you for your service to our church, and thank you for your cooperation in complying with the child protection requirements. Volunteers between the ages of 14 and 18 are subject to
additional requirements. Please contact Lori Ryan (410-464-4006) in the parish office with any questions.

FRIDAYS IN LENT
On March 20th, we enjoyed watching the film “Paper Clips” and on Friday the 27th, we prepared
casseroles for our friends at Our Daily Bread, each event with prayer and fellowship over a Lenten
dinner. This will conclude our Friday evening service opportunities this Lent but don’t despair, we
will have one more event to make up for the one cancelled March 6th. On Friday, April 17th, 5:308:00PM, we will show the film “The Butler” that is based on the story of a man’s service to this
country over three decades. Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) gets the opportunity of a lifetime when
he is hired as a butler at the White House. Over the course of the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, Cecil has a
front-row seat to history and the inner workings of the Oval Office. However, his commitment to
his "First Family" leads to tension at home, alienating his wife (Oprah Winfrey) and causing conflict
with his anti-establishment son. It is a moving story about the challenges of balancing a life of honorable service with personal pressures in life. We hope you will be able to join us for this evening
April 17th. Please call Carol Gould at 443-956-9431 if you would like to help out at the April 17th
showing of the Butler.
Respect Life
Linda Brenegan, Respect Life Program Director for the Archdiocese of Baltimore shares with us this
update on the Spiritual Adoption Program. MONTH 6 – Developing Baby – “I’m sitting up
straight now - Your spiritually adopted baby is developing quite beautifully now. Her weight is
approaching 2 pounds. She sits up straight now to accommodate her internal organs which have
moved into their final place in her little body. Babies born prematurely at this time have a very good
chance of surviving. The medical advances in caring for extremely small newborn infants are extraordinary indeed. Don’t forget to pray for your baby. Abortion is legal through all nine months and her
mom might still feel pressure to abort. Please pray also for babies who are in danger of miscarriage.
