REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD The conviction and enthusiasm of eyewitness accounts gives them a certain ring of truth. Yet the more eyewitnesses there are the more variance there may be in the details reported. Different witnesses may have seen different things--or seen things differently--but they usually agree on the fundamental truth about what happened. The Easter scriptures record the eyewitness accounts of Mary Magdalene, John, and Peter. Their credibility rests not on the precise details, but on the conviction and enthusiasm of the eyewitnesses. It is their belief in the Resurrection that convinces others to believe. Like these scriptural eyewitnesses, today’s believers are also “witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead” (Acts 10:41). We are called to “testify that he is the one appointed by God” (10:42) by giving eyewitness accounts of how the Spirit of the risen Christ is alive today. Our accounts may not agree in every detail, but the core truth will be the same, that Jesus Christ is risen indeed! --Virginia Stillwell Copyright (c) 2014, World Library Publications. FIGHT AGAINST ‘LOGIC OF PROFIT,’ UNEMPLOYMENT IS UNJUST, POPE SAYS Because unemployment is an injustice that harms human dignity, people must make certain that the “logic of solidarity and the logic of justice” prevail over the “logic of profit,” Pope Francis said. “When people don’t earn their bread, they lose their dignity. This is the tragedy of our times, especially for young people, who, without work, have no prospects for the future and can become easy prey to criminal organizations,” he said March 25 at the end of his general audience talk in St. Peter’s Square. The pope’s comments came after he greeted a delegation of state workers from Calabria in southern Italy; they were led by Bishop Luigi Renzo of Mileto-Nicotera-Tropea. Public employees of the province of Vibo Valentia, where Bishop Renzo’s diocese is located, had not been paid for the past five months and were planning a two-day general strike. The pope said he was aware of the workers’ “serious economic situation” and expressed his prayers and concern for their “unbearable” difficulties. Launching a “heartfelt appeal,” Pope Francis asked that “the logic of profit not prevail over that of solidarity and justice.” VATICAN CITY (CNS) POPE’S PALM SUNDAY HOMILY Below is the Vatican-provided translation of Pope Francis’ Palm Sunday homily, which was given this morning in St. Peter’s Square: At the heart of this celebration, which seems so festive, are the words we heard in the hymn of the Letter to the Philippians: “He humbled himself” (2:8). Jesus’ humiliation. These words show us God’s way and the way of Christians: it is humility. A way which constantly amazes and disturbs us: we will never get used to a humble God! Humility is above all God’s way: God humbles himself to walk with his people, to put up with their infidelity. This is clear when we read the Book 6 DIOCESE & WORLD NEWS of Exodus. How humiliating for the Lord to hear all that grumbling, all those complaints against Moses, but ultimately against him, their Father, who brought them out of slavery and was leading them on the journey through the desert to the land of freedom. This week, Holy Week, which leads us to Easter, we will take this path of Jesus’ own humiliation. Only in this way will this week be “holy” for us too! We will feel the contempt of the leaders of his people and their attempts to trip him up. We will be there at the betrayal of Judas, one of the Twelve, who will sell him for thirty pieces of silver. We will see the Lord arrested and carried off like a criminal; abandoned by his disciples, dragged before the Sanhedrin, condemned to death, beaten and insulted. We will hear Peter, the “rock” among the disciples, deny him three times. We will hear the shouts of the crowd, egged on by their leaders, who demand that Barabas be freed and Jesus crucified. We will see him mocked by the soldiers, robed in purple and crowned with thorns. And then, as he makes his sorrowful way beneath the cross, we will hear the jeering of the people and their leaders, who scoff at his being King and Son of God. This is God’s way, the way of humility. It is the way of Jesus; there is no other. And there can be no humility without humiliation. Following this path to the full, the Son of God took on the “form of a slave” (cf. Phil 2:7). In the end, humility means service. It means making room for God by stripping oneself, “emptying oneself”, as Scripture says (v. 7). This is the greatest humiliation of all. There is another way, however, opposed to the way of Christ. It is worldliness, the way of the world. The world proposes the way of vanity, pride, success… the other way. The Evil One proposed this way to Jesus too, during his forty days in the desert. But Jesus immediately rejected it. With him, we too can overcome this temptation, not only at significant moments, but in daily life as well. In this, we are helped and DIOCESE & WORLD NEWS comforted by the example of so many men and women who, in silence and hiddenness, sacrifice themselves daily to serve others: a sick relative, an elderly person living alone, a disabled person… We think too of the humiliation endured by all those who, for their lives of fidelity to the Gospel, encounter discrimination and pay a personal price. We think too of our brothers and sisters who are persecuted because they are Christians, the martyrs of our own time. They refuse to deny Jesus and they endure insult and injury with dignity. They follow him on his way. We can speak of a “cloud of witnesses” (cf. Heb 12:1). Let us set about with determination along this same path, with immense love for him, our Lord and Saviour. Love will guide us and give us strength. For where he is, we too shall be (cf. Jn 12:26). Amen . There is “a new style, in which the contents of the irrenouncable Gospel of life are all reaffirmed and proclaimed,” while “avoiding the temptation to impose unbearable burdens.” “The culture of life is one with the ‘option for the poor,’” he added, as he distinguished the option for the poor from welfare programs and decried “libertarian biotechnology ideologies.” Catholic World News - March 25, 2015 7 TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Peter is an eyewitness: The Lord is risen (Acts 10:34a, 37-43). You can hear the older term, and the resistance to English influence, in the Irish “Casca” and Scottish “Pask.” Romance languages stay close to the deep paschal tradition, with the French “Pâques,” Spanish “Pascua” and Italian “Pasqua.” Memories of our pagan past with “Oester” will not soon fade away: even Japanese Christians are under her spell, for today’s feast is called “ I-suta.” Swahili, a young language, takes the more traditional route with “Pasaka.” Each language yields a rich insight into the feast. Spanish includes a sense that today is a “big Sunday” by adding the designation “Pascua” to the greatest feasts, such as “Pascua de la Natividad” (Christmas). Once Christ is risen, every step of life’s journey is illuminated by the light of the Pasch! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. The name of today’s feast illustrates this well. English is a Germanic language, and our word “Easter,” or German “Oester,” points back to the pagan goddess Eoestre, the star of the vernal equinox feast. The Greek title “Pasch” reaches back in a more helpful manner to the Hebrew “Pesach,” or “Passover.” “Paschal Triduum” may be slow to replace “Easter” in our vocabulary, but it is clearer about the 8 BÚSQUEDA El Domingo de Pascua es un día para la búsqueda. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
