Middle Years category at the annual Red
Cross Day of Pink Film Festival in Winnipeg.

The Day of Pink is a nationwide event/contest sponsored by the Canadian Red Cross
to bring attention to the issue of bullying in
schools across the nation.
This was a great little feather in the hat of
principal Jim Gibbs (and his students), who
appeared in the short three-minute video
at the request of the students, a production
that can be seen as posted on the ESD’s
website.
“I was surprised that they came and asked
me to be in the video,” said a humble
Gibbs, adding with a chuckle that “The
sooner my career as an actor comes to an
end, the better it will be for everyone!”

When grade 8 student Matthew Lake heard
about the contest, he saw it as a great opportunity to combine his passion for filmmaking with the need to get an important
message out to students everywhere.
Lake himself is aware of this problem firsthand. He has been bullied and getting it to
stop for him happened after he approached
school staff members to seek help. For Lake,
that proved to be successful and he thinks
it can work for other students as well.
At the beginning of January 2015, Lake visited classrooms and asked who would like
to join the film club he wanted to form in
order to create the video. Eight other students volunteered to help and, six weeks
later, the finished project was submitted to
the Red Cross.
It is thus all the more impressive that the
school won, since this was the first year
that they participated in the contest, which
was created five years ago, according to
Gibbs.
The film club kids, along with staff members Principal Gibbs and Patricia Stouffer,
attended the awards ceremony at Park Theatre and heard special guests DJ Ace Burpee and former Blue Bomber Obby Kahn
speak, among others.
“I’m very proud of our group for what we
have accomplished and I’m happy we have
made something that can help other kids.
It’s fair to say it was the best day of my life
and I think the rest of the club feels that
way as well,” Lake concluded.

work was his heavy 100-pound sculpture of a bear which a cheapskate admirer somehow stole from an Edmonton
art gallery.
“I’m re-creating the bear,” says the
sculptor who is amazed that the thief

Interlake B&Bs offer welcoming
destinations for travelers

Now that the weather has finally broken, spring is here and that means
that the Interlake’s Bed and Breakfast
(B&Bs) homes are getting set to open
their doors to the travelling public.
“The traveler that stays in a B&B often
wants to be more closely connected to
the community that they are visiting,
even if it’s only for one night,” Martin
said.
“Bed and Breakfasts offer many interesting alternatives to travelers who
are in search of a different experience
when it comes to the hospitality aspect
of their travels,” said Bill Martin, president of the co-op organization Bed
and Breakfast Manitoba.
“These are the type of people who
want to know more about local history, get acquainted with the locals on
a more personal basis, and who are
often in search of a different experience,” Martin added.
Manitoba’s Interlake region has approximately half a dozen B&Bs,
spread out over an area that spans
from Stonewall in the west on over to
River Road near Selkirk (which of itself
has another half dozen B&Bs in its immediate vicinity) and all the way up
to ‘The Last Straw Bed and Breakfast,’
located north of Hecla in the vicinity
of Calders Dock.
In this regard, B&Bs attract what Travel
Manitoba would refer to as the ‘experiential and/or authentic traveler,’ the
kind of person that wants to go out and
do or see something out of the ordinary.
In addition to the above location, other B&Bs in the Interlake include:
• Solmundson Gesta Hus B&B and
Wellness Centre (Hecla Island)
• Bridgeview B&B (Selkirk)
• Evergreen Gate B&B (Selkirk)
• Harlequin House B&B (Selkirk)
• Skipper’s Lodge (Teulon)
“Our association has, year over year,
approximately 60 members, with
some new ones that join while others close their doors for various reasons, often retirement-related ones,”
explained Martin, who happens to be
owner of ‘The Last Straw B&B.’
According to Martin, the association
holds its members to very high standards in matters of cleanliness, safety,
comfort, aesthetic appeal, and so on.
Martin gives the example of his own
area, where he can point his guests
in the direction of nearby Matheson
Island, where the traveler will find an
authentic fishing community, and also
the Métis fishermen at Pine Dock, or
to the caves that dot the area’s littoral
biogeographical zone, having been
carved out of the eroding limestone in
the bay near Lake Winnipeg.
‘The Last Straw’ is one of a dozen or so Bed & Breakfasts
hat open their doors to travellers each year in the Interlake,
from Stonewall and Selkirk all the way up to Hecla and the
Calders Dock area on the shore of Lake Winnipeg.
“We have two conferences per year, at
which time sessions are given on the
hospitality industry’s standards, and all
member accommodations must pass
an inspection every three years on a
rotating basis to make sure that they
are upholding those standards,” Martin continued.

his association’s new green initiative
to be launched at its upcoming conference to be held April 25 in Brandon.

Selkirk Fishermen winless at Keystone Cup hockey tournament

the Selkirk Fishermen represented Manitoba at the April 16-19 tournament after having repeated as KJHL champions.

The Selkirk Fishermen, after having won
the Keystone Junior Hockey League
(KJHL) Championship vs the Peguis Juniors, travelled to Cold Lake, Alberta
to compete in the Keystone Cup Canadian Junior ‘B’ Hockey Championship
this past weekend.

“Unfortunately, we were coming off the
heels of a hard-fought, seven-game series against the Peguis Juniors less than
a week previous to this tournament,
while most of the other teams that were
there had over a week to 10 days of
rest,” said Fishermen head coach Chris
Poponick.
As always, competition at the Keystone
Cup was again at a very high level this
year and the Fish only managed to tie
one (while losing the other four) of their
five round-robin games before returning home on Sunday.
One of their more lopsided losses came
at the hands of the hometown Cold
Lake Ice by a score of 10-0.
“Well, we had just finished playing
three games in just 30 hours after a
long bus ride, so that combined with
a home team crowd of 1,500 for Cold
Lake made it very difficult for us to
regain any momentum,” Poponick explained.
Other factors that make things very
challenging for the Manitoba Junior B
teams at the Keystone Cup is that they
are invariably playing against teams
that have a much larger pool of talent
to draw from (in Alberta and B.C.) as
well as having much bigger operating
budgets.
“For example, the champion Campbell River Storm has an annual budget
of $500,000, while ours is only $40,
000,” Poponick said. “You’re basically
talking about budgets that you would
normally find at the Junior A level,” he
added.
Despite all that, Poponick said that it
had once again (they were at the tournament that was held last year in Abbotsford, B.C.) been an honour to represent Selkirk and the province at the
Western Championship.
“Was I happy with the final result on
the ice? No,” Poponick flatly stated.
“But the effort from the team was a solid one, the guys gave up every ounce
of energy they had in spite of the very
tiring week before going to Cold Lake.”

even though we’ll be losing four or five
good players,” Poponick said, adding
that every year that kind of turnaround
is inevitable, especially as concerns the
older players.
“Four players for sure, since they’ll all
be 21 years of age: goalie Bretton Fewchuk, Cale McBride, who was our leading scorer this year, Cory Balcaen, and
captain Tanner MacVicar,” the coach
explained.
“We had some APs (alternate players)
along for the ride to Cold Lake and they
did get a chance to play, so some of
these young guys will probably be with
the Fishermen next year,” Poponick
concluded.

and Green Team staff.

operating machinery and a Class 5 Drivers License would be considered assets.
