Evergreen School Division, in partnership with 2 The INTERLAKE ENTERPRISE May 6, 2015 Continued from front Arborg students fundraising for Nicaragua school this Friday By Marlene Ness Cheryl Johnston, Grade 3-4 teacher at AEMS, described the ongoing classroom efforts to raise social awareness in students. “In Social Studies, we have been researching about different countries, and talking about children’s rights and freedoms,” explained Johnston. “In some countries those basic rights are not being met. When we came to Nicaragua, we discovered a country that needed help.” During the interview, students raised their hands eagerly to offer up facts on Nicaragua, creating a vivid snapshot of the educational system there. “Only one out of ten people can read or write,” said one male grade 3 student. “Only kids age 6 to 12 go to school,” said another grade 4 girl. “Children who do go to school only finish an average of five years of school,” added one female grade 3 student. “And there are barely any schools sense of pride and accountability with this grade 3-4 class, knowing that they have dramatically affected the lives of kids who are much like themselves in a less lucky part of the globe. Friday’s Garage Sale will be held with the support of Coop Grocery Store. Coop has made many generous donations for stuffer bags, which the students have been helping to prepare for sale. He operated a gift and print shop in Winnipeg’s Fort Garry Place until he and Elaine settled in Gimli. He is originally from Surrey, B.C. while she is from Western Manitoba, and they met when she walked into his life as a customer at the Winnipeg store. The Picks were drawn together not only by mutual attraction, but also by their parallel careers as freelance writers. “I ran away from Surrey at 15 and travelled and wrote freelance magazine articles on general topics,” Lorne Pick said. “I was in California, Nevada and Texas before I arrived in Manitoba about 10 years ago.” Because of their backgrounds, the magazine rack at their new Gimli store could be a magnet for the local writing and arts crowd. Among the titles on the shelves are Border Crossings, Manitoba’s literary magazine; plus the Prairie Journal of Canadian Literature, Canadian Stories; the Ryerson Review of Journalism, Canadian Screen and The Dancer. Elaine is also a jewellery-maker whose creations are featured in the store alongside jewellery crafted by Gimli’s Venessa Park. The Picks are planning a year-round operation and the store is currently open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. “We will likely extend our summer hours as the season progresses,” Lorne said. [email protected] Safe Communities First, some facts: Dear Editor, In the farm community where I grew up everybody knew one another. No one locked their doors and all the adults kept an eye on the local children. 1. Marijuana is a controlled substance in Canada. Nothing I write here should be interpreted as any kind of licence or encouragement to break the law. I was especially grateful for this one winter day when my dad dropped me off at our country school. The halls were silent as I walked in. I could see my breath -- a sure sign the heating was off. I had not yet learned to read the clock, but I was sure something was not right. 2. Since 2006 half a million Canadians have been arrested on marijuana-related charges at an estimated cost to the Canadian public of $500 million. Venturing outside I tried the teacher’s residence. Nothing. I waded through snow and through a hedge to the only house for miles. Fortunately, it was close to the school. What a commotion when they found me on their doorstep! My snow-filled boots were pulled off, I was wrapped in a blanket and fed hot chocolate. Then they drove me home. In the farm community where I live now that notion of looking out for one another is still strong. My campaign to represent Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman in Parliament has taken me to most of the municipal councils and many doorsteps. No one has mentioned crime as a problem. Only once has the level of policing come up. But I have been asked about my position on legalization of marijuana. 3. A recent World Health Organization report says Canada has the highest teen usage of marijuana amongst the countries surveyed. Although this could be construed as ominous by a few people, the academy is actually a series of seven free afternoon sessions to help you improve your safety and security inside and outside your home. The three hour sessions, from 1 to 4 p.m., will run between May 19 and July 2 at the Matlock Recreation Club at 77 Matlock Rd. “The sessions are open to all age groups and there are no geographic boundaries limiting attendance,” says Dunnottar Age Friendly Chair Jan Legeros who admits the afternoon times might be most appropriate for older adults. Jan Legeros says topics such as personal and internet safety will be covered at the sessions being organized by Dunnottar Age Friendly. Legeros said the Police Academy originated as an RCMP initiative, but the sessions now offer a wide range of speakers on a variety of topics. For the Dunnottar sessions, Sgt. Robert Lockhart of the RCMP will be joined by such speakers as Gimli pharmacists Ernest Stefanson and Claire Gillis on medical safety, Noventis Gimli manager Nic Mundey on banking, retired firefighter Doug Thordarson on fire safety, and Emergency Measures Coordinator Don Emes on his responsibilities. “People left saying ‘I wish I had known all that’ when there was a similar academy in 2013 at the Gimli New Horizons Club,” Legeros said. Other topics to be covered by the academy include home and personal protection, identity theft, internet safety, gambling, power of attorney, care for dementia patients and safe driving and scooter riding. With two topics to be discussed at each session, the dates are May 19, 26, June 2, 9, 16, 23 and July 2. (The Selkirk MLA was appointed to his first Cabinet post late last year.) The over-arching fiscal focus of the deficit budget is job creation, Dewar said in his budget speech. He predicted more jobs will be created as the province invests more than $1 billion in infrastructure. A modest tax cut for small business, an education tax break for seniors, breaks for students, families, an increase in the minimum wage to $11 from $10.70, extra money for rent for welfare recipients and other minor inducements. Financial institutions will face a oneper-cent increase in corporate tax. Smokers will pay an additional fivecent tax on a single cigarette. There’s no extra sin tax on booze. Dewar said Manitoba is leading the country in jobs growth, having created 20,000 new jobs since the last budget. And, he said, the government’s plan of core investments in infrastructure will keep the momentum on the jobs front. “For most people, the most important economic indicator is a job,” he said. “And here, too, our plan is delivering. We know our plan is working because Manitobans are working. In fact, our rate of employment growth is nearly four times the national average.” “We are fixing the roads, creating jobs and keeping health care strong for the future,” the finance minister said. “More people are living and working in Manitoba than ever before, and they are earning more to support their families. Budget 2015 keeps our momentum building.” According to 2015-16 budget documents, the province will spend $12.865 million on projected revenues of $12.354 million. After withdrawals from its fiscal stabilization fund and other adjustments, the projected deficit at April 30, 2016 is predicted to be $421 million, down just $30 million from the $451-million deficit projected in the 2014-15 budget. Deficits will be the order of the day over the next two fiscal years: $328 million in 2016-17 and $185 million in 2017-18. A $24-million surplus is projected for 2018-19. The province’s net debt is projected to rise to $20.426 billion, up $1.651 billion from the $18.775 billion forecast for the previous fiscal year. The government will invest $4.5 billion over the next four years as part of its core infrastructure investment plan. Spending on roads, bridges ($747 million), flood protection ($48.5 million) and municipal infrastructure ($285 million) is projected to top $1 billion this year. He created Water Stewardship, a new department and the first of its kind in Canada. In 2003, Doer pledged to do a ‘full Monty’ on Lake Winnipeg. Later that year, Doer created Water Stewardship, appointing Steve Ashton to be its first minister. It was, indeed, a watershed moment, as Ashton took the reins of a department solely committed to water. The lake has been on the NDP’s radar since, even though Water Stewardship would eventually merge with Conservation, perhaps losing some of the original passion for environmental protection. However, the latest provincial budget includes a $2.7-million cut to Conservation and Water Stewardship. Funding for research takes an $800,000 hit. Dad was born on the family farm in Arnes on December 18, 1925, the second of six children. He started fishing at the age of 13 on Lake Winnipeg and later building boats with his Dad Grimsi. Joe and Sigurros were married on November 10, 1951 and together they happily raised their four children in Gimli. In 1952, he went to work for the Department of National Defense as a heavy equipment operator and in the early 1970’s he started work with Seagrams retiring as a millwright. Dad was an avid and skilled outdoorsman he loved, hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling which he did until he was in his late 70’s. He loved the outdoors, gardening and had the gift of knowledge and respect for nature. He was a gun collector and was extremely proud of his collection and always ready to share a story or two about each and every one of his guns. He was an accomplished and skilled mechanic. Often working late into the evening on outboard motors to help others. Dad loved all animals and in retirement loved his cat Max. Together Mom & Dad with their close friends and family along with Max made many trips to the southern states, they also enjoyed many great family vacations including Cuba and several trips to Norway. Afi enjoyed spending special times with his grandchildren, boating, fishing and having barbeques and bonfires in the backyard. Joe was a proud member of the Gimli Royal Canadian Legion for 68 years. He loved music, dancing and a good party. Joe will be remembered for his laughter, sense of humour, kindness, gentle nature and outlook on life. He was a loving husband, dad and Afi. He touched many hearts. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Dr R.C. Patel, the staff at Betel Home and Gimli Community Health Centre for their kindness and care. These flycatchers are very animated and have a great call By Ric Hornsby I’m currently sitting in the dining room at Tutzil Nah Guest Cottages. The town is called Maya Center, and I’m deep into the country of Belize. I’m smiling… I began this tour by flying into Cancun, Mexico. A quick bus trip had me delivered to Playa del Carmen for a few days of acclimatizing, walking 5th Avenue, and organizing the next steps of my escape from the Interlake winter. Those who know me know that the nerve disease, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, has changed my enjoyment of winter into something painful, debilitating, and to be avoided at any cost. So, in mid-December, I escaped. My first stop in Belize was the town of Corozal. It is situated near the Mexican border, and it was an easy bus journey from Playa del Carmen. It is a good place to begin a tour of the country. I spent almost a month in Corozal. I had stayed here, previously, on a shorter, faster trip into Belize. I like the town. I met so many good people, there, that I had a hard time moving on. My experiences in Corozal were varied, unexpected, and very pleasant. For example, I was invited to spend one night at a friend’s farm near the tiny town of Caledonia. It was such an amazing place that I have to return for another visit! To wake up with a river, and jungle, on one side, and cane fields on the other side, is something that is hard to describe. It was very, very cool! Corozal isn’t really a tourist destination, but it is quite affordable, and offers almost everything one might desire for a location that doesn’t have winter. There are many restaurants, hotels, bars, and other distractions to keep oneself occupied. The people I met, both travelers, and residents, created an experience that must be lived. There are so many facets to this type of travel that I cannot begin to describe how good it is. I stayed at the Seabreeze Hotel. I had stayed there a few years ago, and I knew it to be good value, clean, friendly, and entertaining! After my time in Corozal, I took a small plane to Ambergris Caye, the location of the town of San Pedro. Madonna named this island, “La Isla Bonita”, and she definitely got it right. However, San Pedro has grown, recently, to the point of being much too crowded, and busy, for my liking. So, the next step was to take a water taxi to Caye Caulker, a smaller, slower, less expensive, and decidedly more authentic place to while away the hours on a tropical island. I had booked into Caye Caulker for two nights… I stayed for two weeks! Caye Caulker is a tourist destination. However, the type of tourist is different from the All Inclusive addicts that populate most destinations. The motto of the island is, “Go Slow”, and they are serious about it. Of course, being only one mile from the second largest barrier reef in the world presents many opportunities for diving, snorkeling, and all the other water sports you can imagine. This is a place of many wonders. My next step was to board a thirty-eight foot catamaran for the trip to the town of Placencia. The cruise, hosted by Raggamuffin Tours, exceeded my expectations. For example, when is the last time you were asked if you wanted, “more extra lobster” for lunch? My hosts were adept at catching, and preparing, the wide variety of seafood we enjoyed at each meal. We had many snorkel stops, and the rum flowed every night. Camping each night on small cayes was another experience I highly recommend! Arriving in Placencia, I had not booked a hotel. So, my taxi driver took me to a few places before I found Lydia’s Guest House. As I walked up the stairs to investigate my potential room, I was greeted by a number of travelers whom I had met at previous locations. I booked in for three nights, and stayed for ten! The food, down here, is excellent. Meals are reasonable in cost and often large enough so that two people can feast on one order of whatever. Of course, seafood is common, and so fresh that one quickly becomes spoiled to what is offered, even in the best restaurants, back home in Canada. OK, back to where I am, now. I think that I’ll tour the Cockscomb Jaguar Preserve, tomorrow. I doubt that I’ll see the elusive jaguar, but the birds, animals, and landscapes, will prove worthwhile. The disease I have prevents me from moving at what would be considered a normal speed, so I’ll book a guide for just myself. I have expectation for getting a number of photographs of the fauna of the area. I’ve been very successful, so far. Belize is a small country. The main language is English; the currency is based on the US dollar. I’ve heard Belize described as a third-world country, and I’ve heard it described as a developing nation. There are some of the World’s best beaches, jungles, and hotels. There is everything you could want for in a place to hide from the winter… and more! My next location? I’m not sure, yet. I have no hard plans. I’m on a walkabout… *Ric Hornsby, formerly of Arnes, and a past contributor of nature photography to the Interlake Enterprise, is currently hiding from winter in the Central American country of Belize. For those not familiar with his work, Ric was a commercial photographer, in Winnipeg, for many years. Recently, his images have won a number of awards, and have been used by such publications as the National Geographic Society. Inflicted with the nerve disease, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRIPS), Ric is now hunting wildlife throughout the coastal and interior areas of Belize on a slow adventure of discovery, and healing. He is planning a return to Manitoba when the weather warms, and may feature some of his work at the next Gimli Craft and Trade Show. After retiring from the Van lines Mom and Dad enjoyed riding their bikes, vacations to the Dominican Republic and spending time with the family and friends. Rest in peace Dad, cremation has taken place and a private service will be held at a later date as per dad’s wishes. The family would like to extend their appreciation to all the staff at the Gimli Community Health Centre and Dr. R. C. Patel.
