There are 10 Steps to Getting Married in the
Archdiocese of Chicago
Congratulations
We are happy you have decided to marry
in the Catholic Church.
We want to help you have a successful
marriage. There is education and
preparation for receiving all the
sacraments of the faith, including the
Sacrament of Matrimony.
The name PreCana is based on the
Wedding Feast at Cana, where Jesus
performed his first public miracle,
changing water into wine at the request
of his mother. Pre means before, so
before your personal Wedding Feast
at Cana, your own wedding day, we
help you prepare for the Sacrament
of Matrimony and start you on your
journey to a lifelong marriage.
1. Meet with your parish priest or
marriage minister.
Get the information about
guidelines for marriage at the
parish. Ask how to arrange
for appropriate music for the
ceremony. You will also begin
to fill out some of the required
papers.
2. Take a premarital inventory.
The inventories recommended
by the Archdiocese as being both
research and scientifically based
with a Catholic understanding
of marriage are The Catholic
Couple Check Up or FOCCUS
(Facilitating Open Caring
Communication Understanding
and Study) instruments. Both
inventories are taken online.
3. Discuss your results with each
other and the person preparing
you for marriage.
4. Attend a marriage preparation
class. Information about PreCana,
Discovery Weekend, and One in
Christ is found in this booklet, or
you can call 312.534.8201 or sign
up online at
www.familyministries.org.
5. Attend an introductory Natural
Family Planning or Christian
Sexuality class. NFP consists
of scientific natural methods
to achieve, space, or avoid a
pregnancy, strengthening the
marriage, the couple, and the
family by teaching couples to read
and interpret signs of fertility and
infertility. The Christian Sexuality
class is based on the Theology of
the Body with lectures, discussion,
and workbook exercises.
6. Consult with your marriage
minister.
Discuss any issues or concerns
raised in your marriage
preparation class and review
the details of the ceremony with
the pastoral minister, priest, or
deacon. Complete all papers and
review the readings and music
you have chosen.
7. Attend your wedding rehearsal
and buy a marriage license.
The wedding rehearsal takes
place at your church with those
involved in the ceremony as
determined with your marriage
minister. Be sure you buy your
marriage license at least one but
no more than 60 days before the
ceremony.
8. Enjoy your wedding day.
Your big day is finally here as you
begin your lifetime commitment
to one another, your own
marriage in the Lord.
9 and 10. Attend two newly married
continuing education workshops in
your first year of marriage.
Marriage Preparation
The Archdiocese of Chicago offers marriage preparation classes called PreCana,
Discovery Weekend or One in Christ. Read the descriptions on the following pages
and check with the parish that you are marrying in for their requirements and to see
which best matches your needs.

PreCana Classes
which include PreCana, designed for couples in their twenties with no unusual concerns, Special PreCana, recommended
for couples who are living together, or over 30, who have a child or children that are biologically theirs, or if one or both were
previously married, and Marrying with Stepchildren PreCana, for couples when the marriage will create a stepfamily,
whether the children will be living with the couple or not, are all a one day Saturday class led by a trained married couple, held
at a variety of parishes. Through short talks, sharing of the facilitator’s own experiences, group exercises and personal reflection,
engaged couples are guided through topics useful for a successful future marriage. Some of the topics presented are: the sacrament
of marriage, couple adjustment and growth, Catholic faith, natural family planning, conflict management, finances, and children.
Class starts at 9 AM and ends at 4:30 PM. There is a one hour lunch break. You will receive a certificate of attendance at the end of
the day which fulfills the marriage preparation requirement in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
The fee for any PreCana is $190 per couple. This covers the cost of the program, continental breakfast, handouts, workbooks,
resources, a Christian Sexuality or NFP 101: Introduction to Natural Family Planning class, and site rental. After your marriage,
your PreCana fee entitles you to attend two newly-married continuing education workshops for free in your first year of marriage
and a monthly Catholic e-newsletter with topics to help new marriages.
Discovery Weekend
is an overnight retreat-type experience combining private time for reflection with
activities led by a team of married couples. The same topics covered at PreCana are
covered at Discovery Weekend. This also fulfills the marriage preparation requirement
in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
The fee is $295 per couple. Overnight stay, meals, resources, handouts, and a Christian
Sexuality or NFP 101: Introduction to Natural Family Planning class are covered in
the cost. It starts at 8:15 AM on Saturday and ends at 3:30 PM on Sunday with Mass

One in Christ
This seminar will provide you with an all-inclusive and comprehensive appreciation for and
knowledge of the Vocation and Sacrament of Marriage. One of the key objectives of One in Christ
is to help engaged couples rediscover or discover for the first time the beauty, truth and goodness
of the Catholic faith and how it relates to their marriage. The seminar presents both the theology
and the practical tools of Christian marriage so that you will come to a deeper understanding of
how marriage is a participation in the life of Heaven and what that means for your life together
here on Earth. The pedagogical approach to the seminar is threefold: presentations teach and
engage couples to see how the Catholic faith relates to marriage and family life and are then
followed by discussion/reflection and prayer.
The fee is $200 per couple. Two full days, books, and resources, catered breakfast and lunches,
NFP class and stipends for the couple presenters is included in the fee. See more on page 4 or

Hay 10 Pasos para casarse en la
Arquidiócesis de Chicago
1. Reunión inicial con el sacerdote o
ministro pastoral.
Reúnanse con el sacerdote, ministro
pastoral o diácono. Infórmense acerca
de las normas que su parroquia tiene
para celebrar un matrimonio. Pidan el
Rito de Matrimonio que es un manual
para seleccionar las lecturas y otra

para el día de su boda. Pregunten
sobre la música y cómo conseguir la
música apropiada para la ceremonia.
También les pedirán que llenen algunos
documentos necesarios.
2. Evaluación premarital y discusión.
En este punto las parejas tienen
tres opciones para continuar con
su preparación para el matrimonio:
1. Usar la “Guía de discusión
prematrimonial para parejas”. Esta guía
está hecha para animar a las parejas a
comuicarse honesta y sinceramente, a
la vez que les motiva a aprender más,
mientras continúan su preparación
matrimonial. 2. Usar la “Evaluación
de la Relación” un programa en línea
diseñada para ayudarle a usted y a
su pareja a construir una relación
más satisfactoria e íntima. 3. Usar
“FOCCUS” que es un inventario
prematrimonial. Para más información

3. Evaluación premarital y discusión
continua.
La “Guía de discusión prematrimonial
para parejas” consta de 4 sesiones, de
una hora u hora y media cada una. Por
favor hable con su sacerdote o diácono
para que los guie en este proceso. Haga
lo mismo si usted decide usar FOCCUS
o la Evaluación de la Relación.
4. Partcipar en un programa de
preparación matrimonial parroquial
o Arquidiocesano.
Infórmese en su parroquia sobre
los requisitos necesarios para la

5. Partcipar en las clases de
Planificación Familiar Natural o
Sexualidad Cristana.
La Arquidiócesis de Chicago ofrece
instrucción en el Método de la
Ovulación Billings y el Método
Sintotérmico. La PFN consiste en
6 sesiones, de instrucción, y cuatro
sesiones de seguimiento. Es necesario

6. Consulta con el Ministro Pastoral
acerca de la boda.
Discutan cualquier preocupación
o problema que ha surgido como
producto de la participación en su
programa de preparación matrimonial.
Repasen los detalles de la ceremonia
con el ministro pastoral, el sacerdote o
el diácono. Terminen de llenar todos
los documentos necesarios. Repasen
las decisiones que ustedes han hecho
acerca de las lecturas y la música.
7. El ensayo de la boda.
El ensayo de la boda se hace con toda
las personas principales. Las personas
principales son los que tienen un rol
activo en la ceremonia: La novia, el
novio, la dama y chambelán de honor,
y los lectores. Incluya a otras personas
sugeridas por el ministro pastoral,
sacerdote, o diácono.
8. Día de la boda.
¡Felicidades! Su gran día ha llegado.
Disfruten este día con la familia y
amigos mientras ustedes comienzan su
compromiso de vida juntos.
9 y 10. Participar en la primera y
segunda sesión de seguimiento
después de la boda. Se recomienda
que las parejas tomen ventaja de estas
dos sesiones en el primer año de
matrimonio. Una sesión en el primer
semestre y la otra en el segundo. Estas
sesiones se enfocan en las áreas más
problemáticas de los primeros 5 años.

Queremos que tenga un matrimonio
exitoso y sabemos que usted
también lo desea. Para recibir los
sacramentos se requiere preparación
y educación, y PreCaná les
preparar· para el sacramento del
matrimonio. El nombre PreCaná
hace referencia a las Bodas de
Caná donde Jesús realizó su
primer milagro público, cambiando
el agua en vino a petición de su
madre. “Pre” quiere decir antes, y
“Caná” se refiere al milagro que
realizó Jesús. Así PreCaná es la
preparación matrimonial antes que
Jesús haga el milagro de unirlos
a ustedes en un solo cuerpo y una
sola carne. PreCaná les ayudar a
prepararse para el sacramento del
matrimonio y a poner las bases para
una jornada matrimonial fructifera,
saludable, y para toda la vida.

Clases de Preparación Matrimonial
La Arquidiócesis de Chicago ofrece dos tipos de clases de preparación matrimonial. PreCaná Regular y
PreCaná Especial, en español.
PreCaná Regular es para las parejas que no viven juntas y no están casadas por el civil.
PreCaná Especial es para las parejas que están casadas por lo civil o están viviendo juntas y ahora
desean casarse por la iglesia.
Clases
de PreCaná
En las clases de PreCaná usted podrá reflexionar, con su pareja, lo que significa casarse y vivir un matrimonio cristiano. El programa
está facilitado por parejas que, con su experiencia, ilustran y hacen más ameno e interesante el desarrollo del mismo. Usted y su pareja
podrán explorar, además,aquellas áreas que pudieran ser motivo de conflicto o fortaleza para vivir una vida matrimonial feliz y en
concordancia con la fe cristiana. El sacramento del matrimonio, la sexualidad y la comunicación en pareja son algunos de los temas
que formarán parte de su PreCaná. Este programa está basado en el libro El Amor Nuestro y el Sacramento del Matrimonio, que usted
y su pareja recibirán cuando asistan al programa de PreCaná.
Llame a la parroquia donde usted se va casar para informarse acerca de los requisitos que la parroquia pide y para decidir con su
párroco cúal clase es la mejor para ustedes, según sus necesidades.
Requisitos
para participar en PreCaná
ÊÊ Debe venir a vivir su PreCaná con su pareja, a excepción de casos muy especiales.
ÊÊ Estar en el lugar de su PreCaná a tiempo. La clase comienza a las 8:30 AM y termina a
las 5:30 PM. Después de haber dado inicio, no se acepta a nadie. No se puede ir antes
de terminar el programa. Usted recibirá el certificado que hace constar de que hizo su
PreCaná al finalizar el día. Sin ese certificado no podrá contraer matrimonio.
ÊÊ Traer su propio almuerzo o algún dinero extra para comprarlo.
ÊÊ Dar una contribución de $180 para cubrir gastos.
Usted y su pareja, además del libro mencionado arriba, recibirán un hermoso calendario permanente con sugerencias para cada
día del año, de cómo hacer crecer más su relación matrimonial, una suscripción por un año al periódico en español Chicago
Católico, y un CD con reflexiones importantes para su matrimonio.

Waszym własnym ślubem i weselem chcemy
pomóc Wam w przygotowaniu się do
sakramentu małżeństwa i rozpoczęcia nowej
drogi w związku, który przetrwa całe życie.

NATURALNE PLANOWANIE RODZINY
Natural Family Planning – NFP
Naturalne planowanie rodziny jest ogólnym terminem obejmującym różne metody stosowane, gdy chodzi o zajście
w ciążę, odłożenie jej na później lub całkowite zrezygnowanie z posiadania potomstwa. Metody te oparte są na
naukowych badaniach i stałej obserwacji naturalnie powracających znaków i symptomów dni płodnych i niepłodnych
w kobiecym cyklu miesięcznym. NFP szanuje godność ludzkiej osoby w kontekście małżeństwa i życia rodziny. Pozwala pozostać otwartym na samo
życie oraz ułatwia głębsze zrozumienie wartości, jaką jest dziecko. Dzięki wzajemnemu obdarzaniu się miłością i dawaniu życia, NFP również pogłębia i
zacieśnia więź między mężem a żoną.
Istnieją różne metody naturalnego planowania rodziny, ale najbardziej nowoczesną i najczęściej stosowaną jest Metoda Owulacji Billingsa (Billings
Ovulation Method) oraz metoda objawowo-termiczna (Sympto-Thermal Method). Pary zainteresowane stosowaniem NFP uczestniczą w dwóch
wykładach i w czterech indywidualnych spotkaniach z certyfikowanym instruktorem.
Pierwszy wykład – NFP 101: Wprowadzenie do Naturalnego Planowania Rodziny jest bezpłatny dla wszystkich par. Jeżeli para zdecyduje się na
kontynuowanie edukacji w tej dziedzinie powinna zapisać się na NFP 102: Zajęcia z Nauki Metody w czasie których naucza się zasad rozpoznawania
objawów płodności oraz nanoszenia ich na specjalny wykres. Na te zajęcia składa się jeden wykład, po którym następują cztery poufne sesje z
instruktorem. Koszt wynosi 95 dolarów. (Przed zapisaniem się na NFP 102 wymagane jest wzięcie NFP 101).
Zaleca się, żeby para zapoznała się z metodami naturalnego planowania rodziny na cztery do pięciu miesięcy przed datą planowanego małżeństwa.
